Great Mosque of Herat was designed by Sultan Ghiyathoddin Ghori in 597 BC., but he could not complete it successfully. His body was buried under the dome at the North Portico of the mosque in the year 1202 AD. The original building is for before Islam and it was a famous building which was the great Aryan temple and Mazda house and after the Muslim conquest and influence of Islam and Muslims, this ancient temple became the center of Muslims and it was known as the Great Mosque. Only a small portion of the mosque of Ghoryan era was remained at the southern gate. Decorations of Ghori era remained under the decorations of the Timurid era who decorate the mosque by their taste. Experts restored some parts of it in the year 1964. But over the time, a great part of the Timurid works which was restored in 1322 solar year on the mosque. Herat was the capital in the Timurid era. Timurids took the leadership of the cultural movement by attracting artists, architects, philosophers and poets which is one of the brightness period of Herat history. Shahrokh and his wife Gohar Shad are considered as the leaders of the Timurid era. The rule of Sultan Hussein Bayqara from 1468 to 1506 AD is considered as the gold period of Timurid period.
