First: the religion of ghiam (standing)
One of the attributes of the word '' religion'' in Quran is attribute '' ghiam'' (standing). This word has been used six times as the attribute of the religion. Hence, from the point of view of Quran, the religion is ghiam and the Muslims are obliged to implement this religion. At first, the lexical analysis of the word '' ghiam'' will be done and then we will analyze the verse and will deal with features that have been mentioned for this religion of ghiam.
a. The lexical meaning of the word '' ghiam''
Ibn Asir says in the book '' Al-Nahaye''
''قوله تعالی: «دِینًا قِیَمًا» أی قائما. و «ذَلِكَ الدِّینُ الْقَیِّمُ» أی المستقیم الذی لازیغ فیه و لا میل عن الحق''
''The meaning of the word '' ghiam'' is a thing or a person in stood gesture and a vertical thing in the first above verse and in the second above verse, it means a direct path without deviation and it does not deviate from reality''.
Ibn Manzur says in the book '' Lesan Al-Arab''
''قوله تعالی: دِینًا قِیَمًا، أی قائما» (3) و معنی الدین: الملة کأنه قال و ذلک دین الملة القیمه''
''According to the remark of exalted God, ghiam means stood and vertical gesture and the meaning of the religion of the nation is a nation that is stood and established''.
Hamu says about the meaning of the following verse
Tarihi says in the book '' Majma Al-Bahrein''
''قوله «دِینًا قِیَمًا» هو فعیل من قام، و هو أبلغ من المستقیم، باعتبار الزنه. و قیم: قائم. (6) قوله «وَذَلِكَ دِینُ الْقَیِّمَةِ» قال الشیخ أبوعلی: و قیل دین الملة القیمه. و الشریعه القیمه''
Zobeidi writes in the book '' Taj Al-Arus'' in this way
''قوله تعالی دِینًا قِیَمًا أی قائماً. (8) و در معنای دین القیمة می‌گوید: معنی الدین الملة کأنه قال و ذلک دین الملة القیمه (9) و أمر قیم مستقیم و خلق قیم حسن ''
Hence, it can be understood from all of these remarks that the word '' ghiam'' means stood gesture from lexical aspect and a direct path that has no deviation and it is moderate.
b. The features of the religion '' ghim''
''قُلْ إِنَّنِی هَدَانِی رَبِّی إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِیمٍ دِینًا قِیَمًا مِّلَّةَ إِبْرَاهِیمَ حَنِیفًا ۚ وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِینَ''
''Say: "Verily, my Lord hath guided me to a way that is straight,- a religion of right,- the path (trod) by Abraham the true in Faith, and he (certainly) joined not gods with Allah''
The word '' ghim'' is the contracted form of the word '' ghiam'' and the description of the religion is that the religion has upraised in the favor of persons. Some have said that this word means the guardian of the affair. In this verse, God orders the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) to say people '' exalted God has guided me to true path that there is no disagreement about and it is based on nature as God guided Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) toward the religion that was out of polytheism and was toward the moderation of monotheism.
''The number of months in the sight of Allah is twelve (in a year)- so ordained by Him the day He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are sacred: that is the straight usage. So wrong not yourselves therein, and fight the Pagans all together as they fight you all together. But know that Allah is with those who restrain themselves''.
The word '' zalek'' in the above verse refers to the mentioned four months and the word '' religion'' is a series of rules that God has descended for his prophets such as the religion of Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him), Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) and the prophet (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants).
''If not Him, ye worship nothing but names which ye have named,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah hath sent down no authority: the command is for none but Allah: He hath commanded that ye worship none but Him: that is the right religion, but most men understand not''.
The word '' ghim'' means an affair that is strong in its uprising and prudence or it means a person that is permanent and he or she does not deviate. The meaning of the verse is that only monotheism can organize the society and can lead it toward the destination of happiness and it is only firm religion that does not deviate, all of its trains are reality, there is no falsity about it and is growing, but people cannot understand it because they have drowned into material affairs and have lost their common sense and tolerance of wisdom. Most of persons pay attention to the pleasures of the world and turn away from the doomsday. But as we said, growth is in following the religion of monotheism and its trains are all reality and are based on realities and the reasons of Hazrat Yusef (peace be upon him) are enough to explain about it. The religion of monotheism can organize the society of human and its reason is that when human can become happy in the path of his path, he or she can establish the basis and rules of his life according to true path and realities and can act according to it not according to false path and superstitions and lack of fixed point.
''فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّینِ حَنِیفًا ۚ فِطْرَتَ اللَّهِ الَّتِی فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَیْهَا ۚ لَا تَبْدِیلَ لِخَلْقِ اللَّهِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الدِّینُ الْقَیِّمُ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا یَعْلَمُونَ''
''So set thou thy face steadily and truly to the Faith: (establish) Allah´s handiwork cording to the pattern on which He has made mankind: no change (let there be) in the work (wrought) by Allah: that is the standard Religion: but most among mankind understand not''.
''فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّینِ الْقَیِّمِ مِن قَبْلِ أَن یَأْتِیَ یَوْمٌ لَّا مَرَدَّ لَهُ مِنَ اللَّهِ ۖ یَوْمَئِذٍ یَصَّدَّعُونَ''
''But set thou thy face to the right Religion before there come from Allah the Day which there is no chance of averting: on that Day shall men be divided (in two)''.
This verse refers to matters that were mentioned in the previous verses and its meaning is that when blasphemy and polytheism have such a destination, tend toward the direct religion.
''وَمَا أُمِرُوا إِلَّا لِیَعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِینَ لَهُ الدِّینَ حُنَفَاءَ وَیُقِیمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَیُؤْتُوا الزَّكَاةَ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ دِینُ الْقَیِّمَةِ''
''And they have been commanded no more than this: To worship Allah, offering Him sincere devotion, being true (in faith); to establish regular prayer; and to practise regular charity; and that is the Religion Right and Straight''.
Allame Tabatabaei states that what you have been invited to is a religion that provides the social benefits of human. Hence, all of persons should believe in the religion and should not become polytheists. The mission of the messenger was to make polytheists understand that their mission from God was to worship exalted God as a single God sincerely, not to consider anything as a partner for God, to fulfill prayers and to give zakat. In more exact statements, what Quran has about the religion of Ghim is '' human is one of realities of this world, it, his or her inner is related to all of the world and persons have a destination that is same happiness of human and there are guidelines and a path for them in order to achieve it as other creatures are. Hence, God has equipped the world of human to forces and instruments that lead to the perfection and happiness of human and has determined a path of beliefs and action for him or her so that persons can achieve the happiness. Therefore, a path that leads human to happiness, his or her beliefs and certain actions, is intermediate between him or her and his or her happiness and we name it '' religion or tradition'' and it has been determined according to the general system of the world and the certain system of human. In other words, we name it '' nature'' and these path and intermediate obey the system. This is same thing that exalted God has referred to and states
''فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّینِ حَنِیفًا فِطْرَةَ اللَّهِ الَّتِی فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَیْهَا لَا تَبْدِیلَ لِخَلْقِ اللَّهِ ذَلِكَ الدِّینُ الْقَیِّمُ''
Hence, it turns out that tradition that promotes human to happiness is a tradition that the system of the world and human can have it.
Second: true religion
One of other attributes that has been mentioned for the word '' religion'' in Quran is the attribute '' true''. We will analyze verses that the word '' religion'' has been used along with this attribute.
a. The features of the true religion
''هُوَ الَّذِی أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُ بِالْهُدَىٰ وَدِینِ الْحَقِّ لِیُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّینِ كُلِّهِ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِاللَّهِ شَهِیدًا''
''It is He Who has sent His Messenger with Guidance and the Religion of Truth, to proclaim it over all religion: and enough is Allah for a Witness''.
This phrase has been repeated in three verses in Quran and it expresses that God has sent his messenger with guidance and the true religion. Therefore, the feature of this true religion is that it has been descended by God, God has sent his messenger in order to guide human and finally this religion will deal with all religions.
It has been expressed in the interpretation '' Al-Mizan'' about the following phrase
َ''لاَ یَدِینُونَ دِینَ الْحَقِّ''
''Adding the word '' religion'' to the word '' right'' is not adding a quality to the adjective so that its meaning can be a religion that is true , but its purpose is a religion that is related to reality and its relationship with true path is that the foundation of true path is that human can have the religion and it makes him or her follow the religion. If we say that the religion leads human to true path, this remark will be like an interpretation that specifies true path and false path. This means that there are two ways, one of them for true remarks and the other one for false remarks. In other words, it means a way whose purpose and destination are true or false remarks. The reason of this meaning is a point that can be understood from the following verses and other verses that are related to this matter.
'' فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّینِ حَنِیفًا فِطْرَةَ اللَّهِ الَّتِی فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَیْهَا لَا تَبْدِیلَ لِخَلْقِ اللَّهِ ذَلِكَ الدِّینُ الْقَیِّمُ''
''إِنَّ الدِّینَ عِندَ اللّهِ الإِسْلاَمُ''
The point is that the religion of the Islam is a principle in the world that messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) invites human to surrender against and persons consider it as the way of living and acting to it is called '' Islam and surrendering against exalted God''. Hence, the Islam invites human to something that human has to accept it and has to surrender against it. God invites and guides human to humility out against practical and valid tradition. In other words, Islam is to surrender against the will of God and true remarks that that are real and fixed are a religion and a tradition that results from there. Hence, exalted God states
''وَلَوِ اتَّبَعَ الْحَقُّ أَهْوَاءَهُمْ لَفَسَدَتِ السَّمَاوَاتُ وَالْأَرْضُ
Therefore, if we say that Islam is a true religion, its meaning will be that Islam is a way that the system of creation is based on it and the nature of human invites him to obey it. It is a nature that God has created human according to it. Hence, not following the true religion means that they do not follow the true tradition that is in line with the system of creation. In this verse, the features of the true religion have been expressed from the point of view of Quran. According to this verse, the true religion is a religion that includes trains such as faith in God, faith in the doomsday and consider haram whatever God and his messenger have considered it haram.
b. The true and false religion in Quran
One of considerable points in Quran is that the word '' religion is applied for the true religion as well as the false religion. Quran considers other religions, even idolism, as a religion, but it does not consider them false religions and it expresses that other religions except Islam should be eradicated. For example, Quran states in Baqarah Surah in verse 193
''Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge then of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued ''
''وَقَاتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّىٰ لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ وَیَكُونَ الدِّینُ لِلَّهِ ۖ فَإِنِ انتَهَوْا فَلَا عُدْوَانَ إِلَّا عَلَى الظَّالِمِینَ''
''And fight them on until there is no more Tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah; but if they cease, Let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression''.
Quran expresses about the following verse that only accepted religion is Islam and its opposite conception is that although other religions are accepted by God, they will be considered as a kind of religion and rules;
''انَّ الدِّینَ عِندَ اللَّهِ الْإِسْلَامُ ۗ وَمَا اخْتَلَفَ الَّذِینَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ إِلَّا مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَهُمُ الْعِلْمُ بَغْیًا بَیْنَهُمْ ۗ وَمَن یَكْفُرْ بِآیَاتِ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ سَرِیعُ الْحِسَابِ''
''The Religion before Allah is Islam (submission to His Will): Nor did the People of the Book dissent therefrom except through envy of each other, after knowledge had come to them. But if any deny the Signs of Allah, Allah is swift in calling to account''.
''وَمَن یَبْتَغِ غَیْرَ الْإِسْلَامِ دِینًا فَلَن یُقْبَلَ مِنْهُ وَهُوَ فِی الْآخِرَةِ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِینَ''
''If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (submission to Allah), never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter He will be in the ranks of those who have lost (All spiritual good)''.
These two verses are about persons that select a religion except Islam. In other words, in spite of the fact that the religion and rules of these persons are not acceptable and are not in line with the current tradition all over world, but they are considered as a kind of religion and rules.
''مَنْ أَحْسَنُ دِینًا مِّمَّنْ أَسْلَمَ وَجْهَهُ لِلَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحْسِنٌ وَاتَّبَعَ مِلَّةَ إِبْرَاهِیمَ حَنِیفًا ۗ وَاتَّخَذَ اللَّهُ إِبْرَاهِیمَ خَلِیلًا''
''Who can be better in religion than one who submits his whole self to Allah, does good, and follows the way of Abraham the true in Faith? For Allah did take Abraham for a friend''.
It has been expressed in above verse that the best religion is a religion that has such features. The opposite conception of this sentence is that in spite of the fact that other religions are best, they can be considered as a kind of religion and rules. As it is expressed in the two following verses, in spite of the fact that God considers the weak points of the religion of Sunni, it considers their rules as a religion;
''یَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لَا تَغْلُوا فِی دِینِكُمْ وَلَا تَقُولُوا عَلَى اللَّهِ إِلَّا الْحَقَّ ۚ إِنَّمَا الْمَسِیحُ عِیسَى ابْنُ مَرْیَمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَكَلِمَتُهُ أَلْقَاهَا إِلَىٰ مَرْیَمَ وَرُوحٌ مِّنْهُ ۖ فَآمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ ۖ وَلَا تَقُولُوا ثَلَاثَةٌ ۚ انتَهُوا خَیْرًا لَّكُمْ ۚ إِنَّمَا اللَّهُ إِلَٰهٌ وَاحِدٌ ۖ سُبْحَانَهُ أَن یَكُونَ لَهُ وَلَدٌ ۘ لَّهُ مَا فِی السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِی الْأَرْضِ ۗ وَكَفَىٰ بِاللَّهِ وَكِیلًا''
''O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of Allah aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) a messenger of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah and His messengers. Say not "Trinity" : desist: it will be better for you: for Allah is one Allah: Glory be to Him: (far exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs''.
''قُلْ یَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لَا تَغْلُوا فِی دِینِكُمْ غَیْرَ الْحَقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا أَهْوَاءَ قَوْمٍ قَدْ ضَلُّوا مِن قَبْلُ وَأَضَلُّوا كَثِیرًا وَضَلُّوا عَن سَوَاءِ السَّبِیلِ''
''Say: "O people of the Book! exceed not in your religion the bounds (of what is proper), trespassing beyond the truth, nor follow the vain desires of people who went wrong in times gone by,- who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the even way''.
Each of the following verses prove that the word '' religion'' is applied for true religion as well as false religion;
''وَقَاتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّىٰ لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ وَیَكُونَ الدِّینُ كُلُّهُ لِلَّهِ ۚ فَإِنِ انتَهَوْا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ بِمَا یَعْمَلُونَ بَصِیرٌ''
''And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah altogether and everywhere; but if they cease, verily Allah doth see all that they do''.
''ذْ یَقُولُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ وَالَّذِینَ فِی قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ غَرَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ دِینُهُمْ ۗ وَمَن یَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِیزٌ حَكِیمٌ''
''Lo! the hypocrites say, and those in whose hearts is a disease: "These people,- their religion has misled them." But if any trust in Allah, behold! Allah is Exalted in might, Wise''.
''وَقَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ ذَرُونِی أَقْتُلْ مُوسَىٰ وَلْیَدْعُ رَبَّهُ ۖ إِنِّی أَخَافُ أَن یُبَدِّلَ دِینَكُمْ أَوْ أَن یُظْهِرَ فِی الْأَرْضِ الْفَسَادَ''
''Said Pharaoh: "Leave me to slay Moses; and let him call on his Lord! What I fear is lest he should change your religion, or lest he should cause mischief to appear in the land''.
''هُوَ الَّذِی أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُ بِالْهُدَىٰ وَدِینِ الْحَقِّ لِیُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّینِ كُلِّهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ''
''It is He Who has sent His Messenger with Guidance and the Religion of Truth, that he may proclaim it over all religion, even though the Pagans may detest''.
Quran says to polytheists
'' لکُم دِینُکُم وَلیَ دینِ''
Third: Pure religion
Another attribute that has been applied about the word '' religion'' is the attribute '' pure''. In this part, its lexical definition will be expressed and then we will analyze the verses of Quran that are related to it.
a. The lexical meaning of the word '' pure''
Tarihi says about the meaning of the word '' pure'' in the book '' Majma Al-Bahrein''
''الخالص فی اللغة کما صفی و تخلص و لم یمتزج بغیره، سواء کان ذلک الغیر أدون منه‌ام لا''
'' In Arabic language, whatever is clear and is not combined with other things is called '' pure'' whether it is not mean or not''.
Ibn Manzur says about the meaning of the word '' pure '' in the book '' Lesan Al-Arab''
'' و أخلصه و خلصه و أخلص لله دینه: أمحضه. و أخلص الشیء: اختاره''
Hence, the word '' purity'' means something clear and a thing that is not combined with other things and it is selected.
b. The features of the pure religion
''إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَا إِلَیْكَ الْكِتَابَ بِالْحَقِّ فَاعْبُدِ اللَّهَ مُخْلِصًا لَّهُ الدِّینَ''
''Verily it is We Who have revealed the Book to thee in Truth: so serve Allah, offering Him sincere devotion''.
It has been expressed in the book '' the interpretation of Al-Mizan'' '' it can be understood from the verses of Zomar Surah that polytheists in the time of the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) asked him to give up his invitation toward monotheism and to stand against their Gods; otherwise, the curse of Gods will torture him. Their answer that is expressed in Saad Surah was that God ordered the prophet (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) to purify his religion for immaculate God and not to pay attention to the Gods of the polytheists. Moreover, he should announce to the polytheists that his mission is to invite human to monotheism and the verses of Quran, the documents of divine messages and wisdom represent it. Hence, we see that immaculate God reminds this matter several times in this Surah. For example, he states at the beginning of the Zumar Surah
''قُلْ إِنِّی أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ مُخْلِصًا لَّهُ الدِّینَ''
''Say: "Verily, I am commanded to serve Allah with sincere devotion''
Then he states in the next verse of the Zumar Surah
''Is it not to Allah that sincere devotion is due? But those who take for protectors other than Allah (say): "We only serve them in order that they may bring us nearer to Allah." Truly Allah will judge between them in that wherein they differ. But Allah guides not such as are false and ungrateful''.
Then God refers to this matter in the middle of the Surah and he states
''قُلْ إِنِّی أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ مُخْلِصًا لَّهُ الدِّینَ''
''Say: "Verily, I am commanded to serve Allah with sincere devotion''.
He states in Zumar Surah in verse 14 again
''قُلِ اللَّهَ أَعْبُدُ مُخْلِصًا لَّهُ دِینِی''
''Say: "It is Allah I serve, with my sincere (and exclusive) devotion''
He states in Zumar Surah verse 15
''فَاعْبُدُوا مَا شِئْتُم مِّن دُونِهِ ۗ قُلْ إِنَّ الْخَاسِرِینَ الَّذِینَ خَسِرُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ وَأَهْلِیهِمْ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَةِ ۗ أَلَا ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ الْخُسْرَانُ الْمُبِینُ''
''Serve ye what ye will besides him." Say: "Truly, those in loss are those who lose their own souls and their People on the Day of Judgment: Ah! that is indeed the (real and) evident Loss''.
The meaning of the purity of the religion for God is that God does not accept the prayer of a person that worships another thing or person except him, whether he or she worships God as well as another thing and person or he or she worships another thing or person except God.
