Perhaps Shevi or Tale Zang is the most beautiful waterfall across the country. It lies in Dezful , Khuzestan province. People of Lorestan believe that it does belong to their province; considering the path to reach it , they might be right to some extent.
There is no accurate report of the size of waterfall but it seems that the height of the waterfall from its origin to the river is almost 80 meters with a width of about 70 meters. Its amount of water differs depending on various seasons and reaches its height in springtime.
On the south slopes of mountain and waterfall exit , lies a cave with an unclear length. Locales say that it is several kilometers long. It’s highly recommended not to go there without necessary equipment and caving experience. In the area where water comes out of the mountain, there is a dangerous and wet steep area.
There have been reports of deaths as a result of falls . On the body of the fall there are several exits where water comes out under pressure.
Down the vertical part of the fall, water flows in a stair-shaped area towards the bed of the river. It is fully covered in moss. To reach down there you need to cross the river twice. If you are not in a rush, you can spend a few minutes below the waterfall and get wet. The enjoyment of the view, the roaring sound of water pouring onto your head , a gentle breeze, and the picturesque landscapes opposite the fall will open a new window of excitement in nature wandering. Please go along with experienced people.
About 40 minutes up the first waterfall, flows another one, known as the second waterfall of Shevi. Its’ amount , too, varies. Nearby there are several pools for bathing. Near the second, when there is little water, you can find places for a picnic.
The fall is remarkably beautiful but what makes the journey even more pleasant and memorable is the struggle to go there. If you have planned to take a trip there , be prepared for a sweet-bitter experience for a few days.
How to reach there?
The only logical way to reach is through the railway. You should first head to Tale Zang station on Dorud- Andimeshk road. Built in the 1310s (solar calendar), it is the same railway, which makes a connection between Khorramshahr, Ahvaz and Tehran. Remember the station in Tale Zang is subsidiary and only .local and usual trains stop thereYou can take the usual train from Tehran to Ahvaz. After 3 hours and passing through Dorud , you’ll get to the station. There is another option too: take the local train in the city of Dorud ( in Lorestan) and head off. The spectacular train will stop wherever there is a traveler on the side of the railway. It’s the only way which connects people on different points along the railway. The local train departs from Dorud at 2 pm and moves toward Andimeshk. After around 4 hours you’ll get to the station of Tale Zang.
There are several stops during the path the most important of which are in the stations of Bishe, Sepid Dasht, Cham Sangar, Keshvar, Tang-e Haft, and Tang-e Panj. The path is spectacular in spring. When you go towards the south, the famous heights of Oshtorankuh will appear on your left. Numerous long tunnels are of note. You should spend quite some time watching out of the windows aboard. Those who have never tried the routs in daytime will never forget the memory of the beautiful nature along with solid Zagros mountains .
Near the river of Sezar the train moves towards the south; when it goes further, it gets more abundant and roaring as several streams, springs and waterfalls through valleys are added .I remember two adventurous European guys did row boating along the river to the Dez dam. The path also features various bridges.
Talae Zang station has not many facilities; if you get there late, you are recommended to stay in a mosque nearby ( be careful of your belongings). If its ok to move ahead, you can proceed towards the fall. You should cross the river. You will have to return a path of about one km from where you stopped. You are highly recommended not to go through the tunnels since trains might arrive at any time.
When crossing the famous bridge of Tale Zang , you’ll also have to watch out for trains. The suspending part of the bridge is dangerous and you might fall off. If you follow the pathway, it will take you about 3 hours to get to the lush village. Here you’ll have two ways to access the fall:
Before the village, cross the river. When there is little water, you can do so easily. Once the river is abundant, you’ll have to take a swim. Remember when you get closer to the gorge , it’s almost impossible to cross the dangerous river. If it’s getting dark, you can spend the whole night in the house of villagers. Go along the stream through the village to reach the gorge. Now, the dangerous part of the journey starts up; to go easily, you can use the towrope tied up in part of the mountain to go through. There hasn’t been any death report so far. From here, it will take you about one and a half hours toward the fall.
Once you are in the village of Shevi , there is no need to cross the bridge and use the towline. You can follow your way and climb up the opposite high-rise mountains. The uphill is long but you’ll get to see nomads on the path grazing their herds of sheep and goats. So it’s less dangerous.
There is another advantage. When the river is abundant , on the first way, you’ll have to cross it twice to get to the waterfall. But in the second way, you don’t need to do so. It’s suitable for experienced disorganized teams or those afraid of heights.
Facilities
Iran’s natural attractions offer enough facilities for a pleasant trip. But this waterfall enjoys the least facilities. There is no restaurant and stores. Waterfall comes right out of the mountains in a rush and its water contains no chemical contamination and virus. It’s impossible to carry enough water for several days as the path is long and heavy stuff will exhaust you but if you’d like to have pure healthy water you can get the water into a boil or use chloride tablets. You’ll have a poor service for your cell phones as it is a mountainous area. The satellite system is available in the village but it doesn’t work a lot. Once you leave the station, phone connections won’t be as good .
The closest village to the waterfall is Shevi where you passed through. It’s two hours away from the fall and villagers can provide you with what you need. They are warm, kind-hearted and friendly indeed.
There aren’t enough spaces for camping as the area is steep and offers no shade at all.
If you want to stay there at night , please be careful of wild animals. The remnants of blood, cooked foods, or fried stuff ( made inside your tent) will attract them.
It’s completely unpredictable in spring and you might be shocked by downpours and floods. It’s recommended to bring light waterproof tents and clothing to protect you.
Put your belongings in your sleeping bags under your head. Remember your shoes in a remote place will be the main thing you must have.
If there is enough room in your backpack put at least one pair of light shoes(slippers) for every two people . They will help you cross the river and go under waterfall and move on easily.
Long stay in mountains ( over several hours) will result in a sunburn. Use hats or sunblock.
Don’t leave your waste behind and burry them. Respect the rights of those who come over after you. There are always people who don’t respect the nature. If you are a mountain climber and see waste around burry them too.
Avoid cutting branches for making a fire. With some little time, you’ll find some small pieces of wood along the river. You can take coals, or small and light gas capsules which provide a better heat .
Once you leave the station of Tale Zang, you’ll find no place for getting your video cameras charged. So please come with a charged device.
You can’t’ avoid events. So please bring along necessary medicine or first aid kit.
The best time to visit
Shevi, with a hot and warm climate, lies in the north of Khuzestan. Summertime is not a good time to go for the waterfall. Its water won’t be as abundant as in other seasons. Plus irritating insect bites will bother a lot and the nature is not as green as it is in spring.Esfand, Farvardin and Ordibehesht are suitable times for going up there. The best times are from mid- Farvardin to mid- Ordibehesht. If you’d like to take advantage of the holidays leading up to the weekends, be prepared for the crowds, sold-out train tickets, and lack of a place for camping.
