Gharbal Biz Spring

Gharbal Biz spring (lake), with pleasant climate, is situated between Mehriz and Yazd. The landscape is so delicate and charming that it attracts people from the province every year in the warm seasons. It has various cavities which flow down the slope in rainy seasons. The fascinating mountainous scenery in Mehriz lies on the slope of Mehriz Mountain. It stands next to Shirkooh heights. One of the important springs in Yazd, is surrounded by Sagebrush vegetation. Its water ejects from a source, and cavities are spread out in an area of 40 square meters. The lake is important historically as relics like pottery, bronze objects, remains of an ancient city and some graves indicate it. They date back to different civilizations like the stone age, the bronze age, the iron age, the Medes, the Parthians and the Sassanids.
The relics, the architecture style and the found graves show that the early settlements belong to the early Achaemenid period. People used to settle in the area as there was a water resource. The approximate area of the spring’s catchment is 10 square km. The maximum amount of water is 1270 liters per second and it mainly happens in spring. Its color and quality is fixed. There is a mystery about it not revealed yet. The blind fish in the water flow down the mountain and grow in the lake. It is believed that the fish have reproduced underground and inside the mountain for centuries. The fish are light-colored since they are not exposed to the sunlight and they feed fish-eating birds which migrate from the north to the south.
