The mountain of Sabalan is located 25 km southeast of Meshkin Shahr, 40 km from Ardebil.
In the Azeri language, Sabalan is called Savalan and in Taleshi it is known as Seflun. The mountain stretches in an east-west direction from Ghara Su Valley in the northwest of the city of Ardebil to Ghusha Dagh in the south of Ahar with a length of 60 km and width of about 48 km.
Sabalan overlooks 3 cities of Ardebil, Ahar, and Meshkin Shahr.
The third largest peak in the country, Sabalan is an inactive volcano. Its greatest height reaches 4,811 m. On its west the peak of Sultan Savalan resembles an eagle near a stone shelter which has preserved its shape over years and is considered a symbol of the mountain. The truly miraculous rock in nature looks like a sitting eagle which has turned its head towards east.
The pastures and fields of Sabalan are the most splendid in Iran. Its slopes contain smooth and fertile soil where high-quality and valuable grass is grown.
Sabalan is a favorite of nature lovers thanks to its natural hot springs on the mountain’s slope, its charming summer weather and vegetation, and the impressive lake on top of the mountain.
Since all its peaks are covered in snow and ice all year round, Sabalan has a ski resort named Alvares which tourists love the most.
Sabalan, the holiest mountain across Iran, is home to the tomb of one of the prophets. People believe that it belongs to Zoroaster.
In old texts the relation between Sabalan and Zoroastrians is discussed and it's known as a place where they prayed and worshipped.
One of the things indicating its sanctity is that the locals living around the mountain as well as the migrating nomads of Shahsavan swear by it. According to them, when it comes to Sabalan and especially when they swear by it , a snake would even quit its prey.
