Soltan Sanjar Mountain is the only tourist attraction mentioned in the comprehensive plan of tourism in the province in Zonooz and the surround areas. Also known as Soltan Zanjir, it is one of the high-rise and charming mountains in Azerbaijan which is located in the city of Zonooz , 35 km northwest of the city of Ahar. At an altitude of 3,225 m, its direction goes from west to east with a longitude of 05°64", latitude of 36°38".
The mountain, called Soltan Zanjir by the locals these days, lies in the east of Zonooz. When Soltan Sanjar , the last king of the Seljuk, was defeated in a battle by Gharakhataiyan he was displaced in the mountain and a religious old man gives him shelter to stay there.
So the mountain was in fact his hiding spot.
Today, the tomb of the pious old man is a pilgrim site for the citizens and people of the neighbouring cities. Since the mountain is blanketed in snow almost all year round, it's only possible for the public to pay a visit in hot months of the year.
As a result of a nice height and enough snow it is a source of the river of Zonooz Chai and the areas around such as the waterfall of Goal Akhir which is a precious tourist highlight.
Zonooz Valley contains a basin and is considered an origin for development of agriculture and gardening in the areas around.
Pir Soltan Zanjir pilgrim rituals
Nearby the mountain lies a village named Doyoo Jan where each year special rituals take place with the participation of both men and women of the village. On Tir 19, they leave the village and move towards Pir or Soltan Sanjar, known as Soltan Zanjir, along with their kids. It has a stone surround. People drive part of the dirt road in tractors and walk the rest.
They arrive to the top of Soltan Sanjar Mountain before the sun dips behind the high mountain and rest on the masses of rocks to view their herds going round Pir. It is a show for maintaining and blessing their sheep.
There are stories of the rituals which are spread all over the place which make their beliefs grow stronger. Lots of families gather around Pir to spend the night by the fire. Also the youth, who boast of their conquering and talk of their future plans, stay up. On top of the mountain you can have a perfect view of the villages of Zonoozagh, Zonooz and Marand. Pir , owned by Zonooz residents, is only visited by the villagers of Doyu Jan on this day.
