The wetland of Bur Alan is located 150 km from the border city of Poldasht along the joint border between Iran, Turkey, and Armenia, which is parallel to the southern side of the river of Ghara Su and north of the village of Dim Gheshlagh. It stretches up to a region known as Cheshmeh Sorayya, or Sorayya Spring, which is where Ghara Su originates. Its geographical location is at 39°43' north latitude, and 44°35' east longitude.
The wetland in the city of Maku is among the main wetlands in West Azerbaijan Province and covers an area of 250 hectares. With the hot springs nearby, the region it is considered one of the major habitats for 64 bird species which fly there to spend winter. The environmentally significant area lies on Mount Ararat, on the border of Iran and Turkey.
The striking wetland always contains water.
The ways to access
The wetland's length, from the village of Dim Gheshlagh all the way to Cheshmeh Sorayya, measures 35 km. Its width varies depending on the topographic condition and extends 0.5 to 1.5 km on either side of the border.

Bur Alan, a region located on the zero point of the borders between Iran and Turkey, extends over an area of 68,000 hectares. In addition to Turkey, it has borders with Nakhchivan autonomous Republic and Armenia.
Bur Alan, an extensive area, includes 32 villages and 1,410 households including villagers and nomads, with close to 100,000 animal units -- almost three times the ecology of the pastures in the region can accommodate.
In the old days, the region was known in Azerbaijan as "the lost heaven".
