The word '' passion'' in Quran

Quran states about the meaning of the word '' passion''
یَا دَاوُودُ إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاكَ خَلِیفَةً فِی الْأَرْضِ فَاحْكُم بَیْنَ النَّاسِ بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعِ الْهَوَىٰ فَیُضِلَّكَ عَن سَبِیلِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ الَّذِینَ یَضِلُّونَ عَن سَبِیلِ اللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ شَدِیدٌ بِمَا نَسُوا یَوْمَ الْحِسَابِ
O David! We did indeed make thee a vicegerent on earth: so judge thou between men in truth (and justice): Nor follow thou the lusts (of thy heart), for they will mislead thee from the Path of Allah: for those who wander astray from the Path of Allah, is a Penalty Grievous, for that they forget the Day of Account.
In the following verse, the word '' passion'' means whatever is not found in the book of God, the Sunnah of the prophet and the rules of Quran;
فَإِن لَّمْ یَسْتَجِیبُوا لَكَ فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّمَا یَتَّبِعُونَ أَهْوَاءَهُمْ ۚ وَمَنْ أَضَلُّ مِمَّنِ اتَّبَعَ هَوَاهُ بِغَیْرِ هُدًى مِّنَ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا یَهْدِی الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِینَ
But if they hearken not to thee, know that they only follow their own lusts: and who is more astray than one who follow his own lusts, devoid of guidance from Allah? for Allah guides not people given to wrong-doing.
In the following verse, the word '' passion'' means motivations that are not real and are only imaginations;
وَمَا یَنطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ
.Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْیٌ یُوحَىٰ
It is no less than inspiration sent down to him.
But whatever the prophet (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) has brought from God is true.
In the following verse, the word '' passion'' devotes sins and drowning in lust, pleasures and desires.
وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ
And for such as had entertained the fear of standing before their Lord´s (tribunal) and had restrained (their) soul from lower desires.
فَإِنَّ الْجَنَّةَ هِیَ الْمَأْوَىٰ
Their abode will be the Garden.
Sharif Jorjani denies the meaning of the word'' passion'' '' it is tendency of soul toward lusts that have no religious motivation''.
Deviation from the true path and corrupted beliefs are meaning of the word '' passion'';
قُلْ یَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لَا تَغْلُوا فِی دِینِكُمْ غَیْرَ الْحَقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا أَهْوَاءَ قَوْمٍ قَدْ ضَلُّوا مِن قَبْلُ وَأَضَلُّوا كَثِیرًا وَضَلُّوا عَن سَوَاءِ السَّبِیلِ
Say: "O people of the Book! exceed not in your religion the bounds (of what is proper), trespassing beyond the truth, nor follow the vain desires of people who went wrong in times gone by,- who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the even way.
وَلَئِنْ أَتَیْتَ الَّذِینَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ بِكُلِّ آیَةٍ مَّا تَبِعُوا قِبْلَتَكَ ۚ وَمَا أَنتَ بِتَابِعٍ قِبْلَتَهُمْ ۚ وَمَا بَعْضُهُم بِتَابِعٍ قِبْلَةَ بَعْضٍ ۚ وَلَئِنِ اتَّبَعْتَ أَهْوَاءَهُم مِّن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ ۙ إِنَّكَ إِذًا لَّمِنَ الظَّالِمِینَ
Even if thou wert to bring to the people of the Book all the Signs (together), they would not follow Thy Qibla; nor art thou going to follow their Qibla; nor indeed will they follow each other´s Qibla. If thou after the knowledge hath reached thee, Wert to follow their (vain) desires,-then wert thou Indeed (clearly) in the wrong.
أَفَمَن كَانَ عَلَىٰ بَیِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّهِ كَمَن زُیِّنَ لَهُ سُوءُ عَمَلِهِ وَاتَّبَعُوا أَهْوَاءَهُم
Is then one who is on a clear (Path) from his Lord, no better than one to whom the evil of his conduct seems pleasing, and such as follow their own lusts?
فَإِن لَّمْ یَسْتَجِیبُوا لَكَ فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّمَا یَتَّبِعُونَ أَهْوَاءَهُمْ ۚ وَمَنْ أَضَلُّ مِمَّنِ اتَّبَعَ هَوَاهُ بِغَیْرِ هُدًى مِّنَ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا یَهْدِی الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِینَ

بَلِ اتَّبَعَ الَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا أَهْوَاءَهُم بِغَیْرِ عِلْمٍ ۖ فَمَن یَهْدِی مَنْ أَضَلَّ اللَّهُ ۖ وَمَا لَهُم مِّن نَّاصِرِینَ
Nay, the wrong-doers (merely) follow their own lusts, being devoid of knowledge. But who will guide those whom Allah leaves astray? To them there will be no helpers.
The word '' passion'' means stupid motivations;
مِّنَ الَّذِینَ هَادُوا یُحَرِّفُونَ الْكَلِمَ عَن مَّوَاضِعِهِ وَیَقُولُونَ سَمِعْنَا وَعَصَیْنَا وَاسْمَعْ غَیْرَ مُسْمَعٍ وَرَاعِنَا لَیًّا بِأَلْسِنَتِهِمْ وَطَعْنًا فِی الدِّینِ ۚ وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا وَاسْمَعْ وَانظُرْنَا لَكَانَ خَیْرًا لَّهُمْ وَأَقْوَمَ وَلَٰكِن لَّعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ بِكُفْرِهِمْ فَلَا یُؤْمِنُونَ إِلَّا قَلِیلًا
Of the Jews there are those who displace words from their (right) places, and say: "We hear and we disobey"; and "Hear what is not Heard"; and "Ra´ina"; with a twist of their tongues and a slander to Faith. If only they had said: "What hear and we obey"; and "Do hear"; and "Do look at us"; it would have been better for them, and more proper; but Allah hath cursed them for their Unbelief; and but few of them will believe.
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) states '' two things that I am really afraid include: following passion and long-term wishes. Following desires prevent from going to the true path and long-term wishes lead to forgetting the doomsday. Therefore, righteous persons to get help from others in order to recognize their weak points.
Imam Sadeq (peace be upon him) states '' avoid desires as get away from enemies because following passion of soul is the worst enemy''.
In the following verse, Ibn Abbas has interpreted the word '' passion'' to polytheism;
وَاصْبِرْ نَفْسَكَ مَعَ الَّذِینَ یَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُم بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِیِّ یُرِیدُونَ وَجْهَهُ ۖ وَلَا تَعْدُ عَیْنَاكَ عَنْهُمْ تُرِیدُ زِینَةَ الْحَیَاةِ الدُّنْیَا ۖ وَلَا تُطِعْ مَنْ أَغْفَلْنَا قَلْبَهُ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَاتَّبَعَ هَوَاهُ وَكَانَ أَمْرُهُ فُرُطًا
And keep thy soul content with those who call on their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face; and let not thine eyes pass beyond them, seeking the pomp and glitter of this Life; no obey any whose heart We have permitted to neglect the remembrance of Us, one who follows his own desires, whose case has gone beyond all bounds.
There is no question that if a person follows desires of soul, he or she will be polytheist.
Quran states
أَفَرَأَیْتَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ إِلَٰهَهُ هَوَاهُ وَأَضَلَّهُ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ وَخَتَمَ عَلَىٰ سَمْعِهِ وَقَلْبِهِ وَجَعَلَ عَلَىٰ بَصَرِهِ غِشَاوَةً فَمَن یَهْدِیهِ مِن بَعْدِ اللَّهِ ۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
Then seest thou such a one as takes as his god his own vain desire? Allah has, knowing (him as such), left him astray, and sealed his hearing and his heart (and understanding), and put a cover on his sight. Who, then, will guide him after Allah (has withdrawn Guidance)? Will ye not then receive admonition.
إِنَّ الَّذِینَ تَوَفَّاهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ ظَالِمِی أَنفُسِهِمْ قَالُوا فِیمَ كُنتُمْ ۖ قَالُوا كُنَّا مُسْتَضْعَفِینَ فِی الْأَرْضِ ۚ قَالُوا أَلَمْ تَكُنْ أَرْضُ اللَّهِ وَاسِعَةً فَتُهَاجِرُوا فِیهَا ۚ فَأُولَٰئِكَ مَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ ۖ وَسَاءَتْ مَصِیرًا
When angels take the souls of those who die in sin against their souls, they say: "In what (plight) Were ye?" They reply: "Weak and oppressed Were we in the earth." They say: "Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to move yourselves away (From evil)?" Such men will find their abode in Hell,- What an evil refuge.
? یَا أَیُّهَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا لَا یَحِلُّ لَكُمْ أَن تَرِثُوا النِّسَاءَ كَرْهًا ۖ وَلَا تَعْضُلُوهُنَّ لِتَذْهَبُوا بِبَعْضِ مَا آتَیْتُمُوهُنَّ إِلَّا أَن یَأْتِینَ بِفَاحِشَةٍ مُّبَیِّنَةٍ ۚ وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ ۚ فَإِن كَرِهْتُمُوهُنَّ فَعَسَىٰ أَن تَكْرَهُوا شَیْئًا وَیَجْعَلَ اللَّهُ فِیهِ خَیْرًا كَثِیرًا
O ye who believe! Ye are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should ye treat them with harshness, that ye may Take away part of the dower ye have given them,-except where they have been guilty of open lewdness; on the contrary live with them on a footing of kindness and equity. If ye take a dislike to them it may be that ye dislike a thing, and Allah brings about through it a great deal of good.
مَن لَّمْ یَسْتَطِعْ مِنكُمْ طَوْلًا أَن یَنكِحَ الْمُحْصَنَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنَاتِ فَمِن مَّا مَلَكَتْ أَیْمَانُكُم مِّن فَتَیَاتِكُمُ الْمُؤْمِنَاتِ ۚ وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِإِیمَانِكُم ۚ بَعْضُكُم مِّن بَعْضٍ ۚ فَانكِحُوهُنَّ بِإِذْنِ أَهْلِهِنَّ وَآتُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ مُحْصَنَاتٍ غَیْرَ مُسَافِحَاتٍ وَلَا مُتَّخِذَاتِ أَخْدَانٍ ۚ فَإِذَا أُحْصِنَّ فَإِنْ أَتَیْنَ بِفَاحِشَةٍ فَعَلَیْهِنَّ نِصْفُ مَا عَلَى الْمُحْصَنَاتِ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَنْ خَشِیَ الْعَنَتَ مِنكُمْ ۚ وَأَن تَصْبِرُوا خَیْرٌ لَّكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِیمٌ
If any of you have not the means wherewith to wed free believing women, they may wed believing girls from among those whom your right hands possess: And Allah hath full knowledge about your faith. Ye are one from another: Wed them with the leave of their owners, and give them their dowers, according to what is reasonable: They should be chaste, not lustful, nor taking paramours: when they are taken in wedlock, if they fall into shame, their punishment is half that for free women. This (permission) is for those among you who fear sin; but it is better for you that ye practise self-restraint. And Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. .
یَا أَیُّهَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا لَا تَقْرَبُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَأَنتُمْ سُكَارَىٰ حَتَّىٰ تَعْلَمُوا مَا تَقُولُونَ وَلَا جُنُبًا إِلَّا عَابِرِی سَبِیلٍ حَتَّىٰ تَغْتَسِلُوا ۚ وَإِن كُنتُم مَّرْضَىٰ أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ أَوْ جَاءَ أَحَدٌ مِّنكُم مِّنَ الْغَائِطِ أَوْ لَامَسْتُمُ النِّسَاءَ فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا مَاءً فَتَیَمَّمُوا صَعِیدًا طَیِّبًا فَامْسَحُوا بِوُجُوهِكُمْ وَأَیْدِیكُمْ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَفُوًّا غَفُورًا
O ye who believe! Approach not prayers with a mind befogged, until ye can understand all that ye say,- nor in a state of ceremonial impurity (Except when travelling on the road), until after washing your whole body. If ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands. For Allah doth blot out sins and forgive again and again.
ا یَسْتَوِی الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ غَیْرُ أُولِی الضَّرَرِ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِی سَبِیلِ اللَّهِ بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۚ فَضَّلَ اللَّهُ الْمُجَاهِدِینَ بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ عَلَى الْقَاعِدِینَ دَرَجَةً ۚ وَكُلًّا وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الْحُسْنَىٰ ۚ وَفَضَّلَ اللَّهُ الْمُجَاهِدِینَ عَلَى الْقَاعِدِینَ أَجْرًا عَظِیمًا
Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and receive no hurt, and those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah with their goods and their persons. Allah hath granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and persons than to those who sit (at home). Unto all (in Faith) Hath Allah promised good: But those who strive and fight Hath He distinguished above those who sit (at home) by a special reward.

وَآتَیْنَاهُم بَیِّنَاتٍ مِّنَ الْأَمْرِ ۖ فَمَا اخْتَلَفُوا إِلَّا مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَهُمُ الْعِلْمُ بَغْیًا بَیْنَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ یَقْضِی بَیْنَهُمْ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَةِ فِیمَا كَانُوا فِیهِ یَخْتَلِفُونَ
And We granted them Clear Signs in affairs (of Religion): it was only after knowledge had been granted to them that they fell into schisms, through insolent envy among themselves. Verily thy Lord will judge between them on the Day of Judgment as to those matters in which they set up differences.
وَلَقَدْ آتَیْنَا بَنِی إِسْرَائِیلَ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحُكْمَ وَالنُّبُوَّةَ وَرَزَقْنَاهُم مِّنَ الطَّیِّبَاتِ وَفَضَّلْنَاهُمْ عَلَى الْعَالَمِینَ
We did aforetime grant to the Children of Israel the Book the Power of Command, and Prophethood; We gave them, for Sustenance, things good and pure; and We favoured them above the nations.
It is clear that if a person follows his or her desires and passion, he or she will forget God. Therefore, monotheism and faith in God are not in line with desires and passion. Desires and passions are useful if they prevent persons from committing sins and do not change faith in God to polytheism.
