once upon a time…. In ancient times in Isfahan was an old woman who lived with her only son. The boy had made a small hut from brick and clay in which he and his mother were living happily. The boy got up every day and ate his breakfast and took his saw and ax and went to the woods and gathered firewood and loaded them and took them to the market for selling them and with its money bought bread and food and clothes for himself and his mother.
Once he picked up the ax and asked God for strength and went to a grove near the town to gather firewood. As he stepped into the grove, a big predatory tiger saw him and before the poor boy could defend him, it tore and ate him. Hunters informed his mother that his son was eaten by a tiger. The mother hit on her head and began to cry bitterly and her moan spread everywhere.
After crying so much, she stood up and went to the ruler of the city. Ironically, the judge was there too. The unlucky woman fell at the feet of the governor of the city and pleaded him to send a few bully and husky young person to catch and bring the tiger that had torn and eaten her son.
Ruler of the city agreed and promised to catch the tiger anyhow. But the unlucky old woman was restless due to the death of his son and cried so much at the presence of the ruler that eventually the ruler of the city was bored and asked her to tolerate and not to moan so much and wait until his son's murder be caught as soon as possible and be punished. The ruler said this and turned toward the persons present there and said who was ready to catch and bring that predatory tiger.
A young man named as Shirzad was sitting there. He had gone on a binge and for debauch the night before and was such drunk and dizzy that did not understand well what the ruler said about whom should be caught. So, as soon as hearing the sound of the ruler went ahead confusedly and said that he was ready to catch the murder. The ruler wrote an order and gave it to him and turned toward the suffered old woman and said now she had to be sure that the murder soon would be captured. Old woman became calm and prayed that God to give the ruler a long life with dignity, and after that left there and came back to her home and slept comfortably.
Shirzad too went his home and as soon as reaching there fell in bed and slept till morning like a corpse. When the sun rose and the world was bright, he remembered what promised the night before and what he must do. His body trembled with fear, but he accounted at himself that certainly the ruler was kidding him, otherwise who was able to capture a predatory tiger. He got ready and went to the ruler to refund him his order. He was ready to accept what happened afterwards, because he did believe no one can capture tiger that is enemy to the human being. He went to the ruler and said that he was not serious in the promise he gave the night before. But Ruler said he had to do his promise emphatically and catch the tiger in any way and he had only a three-day deadline to do this work and if he would come back empty-handed he would order to flog him to death.
Poor Shirzad who had had a wrongdoing in his drunken state now was in a bad plight. Inevitably he started out going hoping to see at least the tiger from a far distance. He went and went until reaching a mountain from which he climbed with fear. He searched three full days up and down the mountain and around of it but he did not find even a baby tiger. Every day returned home empty-handed tearful. After ending hid deadline, Ruler ordered to whip him three hundred lashes. Several weeks passed and Shirzad could not find the tiger. As the order of Ruler he was whipped at the end of every three-day interval. His condition had become such bad that even enemy cried for him. One day hopelessly and sad went toward the mountain and arrived a small house at the middle of the mountain height. At that house he cried so much regretting about his mistake in drinking wine at that night causing him to be in such miserable in this day. If he had not drunk that, he would not be drunk to assume such an unreasonable work. As he was talking with himself he heard a soft and quiet voice. He returned and saw a big tiger was standing at the door frame that was looking him with its hangover eyes. Although Shirzad had feared, said: "Oh, pilot tiger! If you have eaten the old woman's son as breakfast, please be brave and let me close you neck."
He said this and with fear and trembling took a rope out of his pocket and gradually went towards the tiger and closed the rope around its neck. The tiger stared into the eyes of Shirzad for a minute and then accompanied him toward the ruler of the city. Ironically, at that day there was a session in the ruler's house in which the old woman was present. The tiger stood there obediently. The ruler said it: "have you eaten the son of this old woman?"
The tiger sadly nodded. Ruler said when it knew that it was culprit, it should also know that killer's penalty was death. This time the tiger nodded sadly too. The ruler's mood was revolutionized due to the regret and heartedness of the tiger and said: "The boy you ate was the breadwinner of this old woman. Without him, she cannot afford the problems of her life. If I free you, are you ready to be her son and work for her and become her breadwinner?" The tiger became glad and this time nodded several times. The ruler ordered to open the rope from the tiger.
When the tiger saw him released jumped out of the session and escaped toward the thicket. The old woman returned back to her home with eyes full of tear and cried overnight due to release of the tiger without punishment and violation of the blood of her son.
When she got up at morning and looked at outside, suddenly was astonished. She saw a killed deer was lying beside the door of her house. She was standing and did not know what she should say. Then she gladly went and took the deer and cooked from it as much as her need and took and sold the rest of it. After that day on, the tiger killed every day a deer for her and also sometimes brought her some things from silk, gold and silver putting them in front of the door of the old woman's house. Some time passed, it was so docile that it went into the old woman's house and even slept in bed at night.
One day the old woman became ill and remained in bed and finally died. The tiger screamed from the depth of its heart and went to the cemetery and as soon as looking the old woman's tomb stone, could not bear it and roared like thunder and wept and left there running into the woods.
The tiger is yet alive and good and happy lives in the woods.
