One of the most prominent Jews of France in the nineteenth century that supported the idea of Zionism was Joseph Salvador (1796-1873). He was the first Jew in France who expressed ideas of ancient Judaism. His first book was published as a treatise of Moses.
Based on the predictions of Salvador, Palestine will finally become the Jewish economic center and will become center of nationalist aspirations of the Jewish people at the same time. A new spirit will be blown into the body of the mountains of Judea and Heights of Maurier which is now in the hands of the Turks, and as they said it as metaphor in the past, one day will come when the Heights will overshadow on all mountains and hills.
He said a new country will be formed on the shores of Galilee and ancient Canaan, in where the Jews could follow their claims due to the historical memory, oppression of some countries on them and sympathy of England.
Salvador, who was a French Jew, will boldly and explicitly indicate the idea of Jewish return to Palestine.
Morris Hess (1812-1875), a prominent Jewish writer and nationalist has strongly supported the views of Salvador in articles about letters in relation with the mission of the Jewish people in the history of mankind.
Discussing this topic found a new dimension by joining a Christian scholar called Doctor Abram Franco Ptavel from the city of Neuchatel in France to supporters of return of the Jews to Palestine. He published two books and addressed a theological perspective to analyze the issue of the return of Jews to Palestine.
In the meantime, another French writer, Ernest Laharn , was the private secretary of Napoleon III who was follower of the Roman Catholic Church, but supported the revival of the Jewish people as a nation by writing a treatise.
Isaac Moses Adolphe Crémieux, who is one of the leading Jews in France and was a member of the French government on several occasions, did many efforts to protect Jews. Throughout his life he remained loyal to his Jewish beliefs and faith. His comments and tone of his voice looked like Victor Hugo.
Kermio was creator and founder of the Jewish Global Alliance. He had a special priority for the revival of the Holy Land. He said: hopes to return to the Holy Land sheds light into our lives like the sun and gives us peace.
Charles Netter (1825-1887) is among other prominent French Jews and acpioneer of Jewish settlement in Palestine.
French Montesquieu (1689-1755) is also from the group. He has expressed a positive attitude to Jews in the book "the Spirit of the Laws". Historians of Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote: Montesquieu indirectly have influence on the readers that the Jewish people played an extremely positive role in the development of European economies.
As it was initially proposed, the thinkers of society do not constitute a separate class from the other classes. They reflect the needs of the society in which they live. The scholars, who fight with tyranny and social, political and economic inequalities in their communities, ask for domination of their desirable country over other countries to meet their economic needs and help in the growth of their country's system of government. Thus scholars in Europe - whether Jews or Christians – were in the service of their countries and according to historical documents, the thinkers supported the resettlement program of the Zionists in Palestine, for the purposes of European countries in the region, and they were trying to show the plan a natural and instinct one. Based on historical studies, the scientists historically tried to introduce the Israeli government as representative and defender of all the Jews in the world, and develop the unfounded and interventionist point of view that if the government is responsible for centralizing autocratic Jewish community anywhere in the world. In this context, they tried to give legitimacy to racist Zionist thinking, which is the goal of colonialism and imperialism and did them in the entire world dominated by them, and know Palestinian Arabs as savages and among the wild animals.
The intellectuals introduce Zionism, which is one of colonialism and imperialism means, as an old trend because according to them, Jews have always hoped to return to Palestine since thousands of years ago.
Professor Norman Bennett Witch, one of the English Zionists who has written extensively on Palestine and had preferred to spend most of his life in Great Britain, said:
Zionism is as old captivity of the Jewish people, when Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the Temple.
Howard Morley Sachar, an English Zionist historian, emphasizes:
Zion was not only fantasy of Living Dead. The idea was placed in the hearts of Jews all over the world.
Nahum Sokolof, leading Zionist thinker, claims that Zionism:
Has been ultimate thousands of years aspiration and our best children have worked and fought and suffered and died in its way.
Judge L. Brandeis, one of the oldest Zionist leaders living in America, confirms him and says:
Since the destruction of the temple, which is nearly two thousand years ago, Jews have always been having the desire to return to Palestine.
Such dangerous viewpoints eventually led to occupation of Palestine and displacement and wandering of the Arab nation in Palestine. Of course, the points of views cannot be ignored. For the aggressive purposes and motives of Zionism - imperialism and shameless colonial purposes that play a crucial role in various events in the Middle East are important.
Alston, English scholar, wrote in the field in book "structure of a nation" that was published in 1963:
There is an obvious relationship ring between the ancient history of Palestine and the recent meaningful and full of fight history of this State, under Ottoman rule, so that it can be said that the Palestine is considered as a unit during the Balfour Declaration and the current government of Israel.
For arguing this statement, which basically is not clear on what reasonable investigation is based, stresses:
For the Jewish people, of course, a mental uninterrupted continuation has been existed since the algebraic dispersions of people till now …and maintaining the same mental continuity led the people to be united and reserved as a nation in exile lands, and provided the force of psychological movement of them on a national level, coupled with a form of cooperation of Judah, to the land of Palestine, and led to the rebirth of an independent state.
For a while before him, in 1958, Israeli researcher and author of "Israel", Ibn Das: wrote the young state of Israel is as "a nation" that has his name engraved on the chest of history during the 4000 year. He explains the claim in a lot of details, and restates antiquity period to the destruction of Jerusalem by the Roman state, due to which "the country failed to gather its unity and independence till rebirth in 1948” and continues:
Over the years, the elders knew it as their main task to strengthen the nation's inherent spiritual force that had been scattered all over the world.
It is clear that his main purpose is to induce the formation of "State of Israel" as "the birth of the nation of Israel," to the readers in his book.
The same theory is stated with the same power by American researcher, Joseph Body, in the "state of Israel land". He writes:
The conquest of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 AD ended independency of the Jewish country and only in 1948 the state of Israel was revived again, which was the third common state of the Jewish people.
In this context, in 1936, a thick book called "the Jewish history process" was written by Israeli researcher, Howard Morley Sasher in America. This book includes the period between emergences of "Jewish neighborhoods" in Europe to the creation of the State of Israel, the history of recent times of the people.
It is noteworthy that Body insists to evaluate this time as embryonic emergence period of the state of Israel. But at the end of the book, the reader suddenly faces his theory, which tends to pretend all scattered history of the Jewish people as history of the Israeli government.
Apart from European writers who had sympathized with the Zionists, Pope John Paul II said at the beginning of his speech on 04/10/1979 at Potter Park, in New York:
I say special greetings to the leaders of Jewish clan who attended the speech and made me honored and I note the directive that the second Vatican Council under died Pope John VI has approved. The directive states that we are both parties who have and the same ideas and we shall form the future by effective friendly negotiations and cooperation.
At the end of his speech, the Pope said:
Me as a Polish citizen sympathize with you and greet you in Hebrew, shalom!
Pope John Paul II called for developing negotiations between the Catholic Church and the Jews on 06/03/1982. The Jordanian Al-Dustour newspaper quoted in heading in 07.03.1982 by AFP that the Pope is calling for understanding between Jews and Christians in his speech at the congress of Catholic Bishops, in the presence of forty experts from fifteen different countries.
AFP has been selected following words of the Pope, and said:
There were misunderstandings and mistakes among Catholics and Jews in the past. We shall neglect the past by peace and mutual understanding and respect.
- horrible oppressions on the Jews applied in different historical periods have opened many eyes and hearts now.
- Christians have taken the right path. They are trying to reach a shared heritage with their by understanding and strive to establish honest, efficient and constant relationship with the Jews.
- Christians and Jews should be allowed to have more joint meetings.
