According to the Iranian Students Tourism and Travel Agency (ISTTA), quoting from Shahrvand, Colonel Jamshid Bagheri said: “The discovery confirmed by the experts from the province’s Cultural Heritage Department relates to an underground city which is located at a depth of 10 meters below the surface.
The city dates back to about 4000 years ago and is considered as one of the strangest discoveries in terms of its size.
The area probably amounts to 5 hectares and its structure and carvings confirm the region’s antiquity. He added: “Of course, it must be more than 5 hectares since access to part of the underground city is impossible due to darkness and lack of oxygen and a part of it ends up in a river next to a village which indicates a water storage pond (reservoir) exists there.
Pointing out there are many broken pottery crocks found in the city he said: “The analysis is ongoing.”
