Martin Luther (1483- 1546), German priest, when the sale of forgiveness of sins was widespread by the Catholic Church in Europe, he rebelled against this phenomenon and the tyranny of the church and established the Protestant religion (Protestantism) in which included 95 corrections involving his belief in the authority of sacred texts in religious life and installed them at the head of the "Wittenberg" Church in the year of 1517.
With the advent of Protestantism, many changes in beliefs of Christianity emerged. The most important of these developments was that Luther stated understanding of religious facts are outside of circumscription of the church men and even it is available for the perception of individuals.
Thus, every Protestant Christian was independent in the study, understanding, inference and interpretation of the Bible, and it opened the implications and various statements from the Bible for the innovators and heretic people, so far Protestantism has more than two hundred different sects.
On the other hand, the religion advocated the return to the Bible as a source of pure opinion and raised and attitude and respect among his followers to the Torah.
Thus, the Old Testament (Torah), formed an important part of the religious beliefs of Protestantism and it became the highest evidence of the behavior, beliefs, ethics and history of this tribe of Christians.
According to the teachings of the Torah, a belief was formed in the minds of Protestants in which there is an eternal relationship between the Jews and Palestinians, and this tribe have exiled from their ancestral land that was Palestine and they should will be inevitably returned on the basis of prophecies in the Torah.
The Catholic Church believed that what is known as the Jewish nation, has already ended and the LORD has expelled them from Palestine because of crucifixion of Christ.
Catholics who followed the saint "Augustine" (354- 430 AD), believed that the prophecies concerning the return of the Jews to Palestine, is pertaining to the return of Jews from Babylon, which was carried out by the order of Cyrus, king of Persia.
"Augustine" believed that Jerusalem is the holy land of the New Testament and said Palestine is a heritage for Christians from "Saint Messiah".
But Protestantism movement, rejected the idea, and promoted the belief that the Jews are God's chosen nation and superior. Thus, the Old Testament was the first and foremost source of the faith of this religion and it was known as a source of pure Christianity, and it even was a part of the worship ceremony of the Church and was the most prestigious historic book of Holy Lands and previous prophets and its prophecies about the apocalypse and the re-emergence of Jesus Christ and the millennium of beatific state.
Lotto reformation movement considered the reliability and great value for Hebrew language as the original language of the Bible and stated that the believers must learn its language in order to understand words of the God correctly. Following this emphasis, many devout Christians started to learn Hebrew language.
Until that time that the Old Testament was considered an obsolete and inaccessible book, with the advent of Lutheran thought is exited from the corner of the temples outside, and it was translated and published.
Luther stressed the necessity of return of the Jews to Palestine as a preparation for the reappearance of Jesus Christ, served a great service to the Jews. He insisted that the "chosen people of God" that have a long life, their life and survival must be guaranteed in the future and the land of Palestine must be for them as the Lord has promised to them. Jews, however, disobeyed Christ, but God's promise has remained. Thus, anyone who stand up to oppose this tribe and prevent them to return to Palestine, is considered the enemy of God and Jesus Christ.
For this reason, Catholic Church called Luther as a Jewish, or at least semi-Jewish and said that he was straying and innovator and is out from the Christian religion. Many observers believed that Protestantism is essentially an invention of the Jews and there is a link between this religion and Freemasonry.
The basics of Luther's ideas were:
1) lack of admitting on the Catholic Church focus and emphasize on Christian leaders democratic choice.
2) The dignity of the Pope is not the forgiveness of sins, but this is only by the divine. Jesus with people entrust to the crucifix and was sacrificed himself to the Christians. Thus, sinful man should only confessed to the God and refrain from repeating the sin.
3) All versions of Torah is rejected, but the Torah which is written in Hebrew.
4) The books in which Catholics consider valid, like as "Akhnukh", "Makabin" and a part of the "Steer chapter" and… are unfounded and rejected.
Another important point that Luther insisted on, was baseless interpretations of Christians about Torah. He stressed the accuracy and legitimacy of the Jewish commentaries and interpretation of the Old Testament.
What Luther's teachings and statements are interesting, is his special attention and surprise about Jewish people and his exaggerated statements about this nation.
Luther strongly attacked the Church and called the Pope and the bishops as crazy people. He accused them that they have behaved with Jewish people in which was suitable to dogs, not humans. He said if I was Jewish and I see as these idiots are the leaders of the Christianity, I was ready to go back into swine, and would not be a Christian.
Coordinately with the tone and logic of the Talmud, he stated that the world was created only for Israel and their task is the control of the world since the Lord, Jehovah, the god of Jewish people, created them so.
Martin Luther wrote in the book of "Messiah was born Jewish" which was released in 1523 AD and was published seven times in the same year:
"Providence of Holy Spirit is that the entire of Bible will only be revealed through the Jewish people. Jews are children of God and we, alones, are their guests... and we must be happy because we are as dogs which eat the rest of their lords' food.
Bishop "Akram Lam'ei" writes:
Luther, reformist leader of the Protestants, endorsed the Jews with a new attitude to the Bible, and announced that "today, the condemnation of Jews due to the position of their fathers which was inconsistent with Christ, is a wrong and a stupid work, and it is not correct to Christianize and baptize them with coercion, but they must submit Christianity with satisfaction and faith.
But when the Jews rejected Luther's invitation to become a Christian, stated that the Talmud represented a better and greater interpret than the Bible, so Luther changed his position against them in 1526 AD, and inveighed them severely. and in 1543 AD, in his book of "about the Jews and their lies" revealed his anger and hatred to this clan and stressed that their temples should be burned and remained no trace of it, their prayer books must be destroyed, the rabbis must be banned to preach and even their homes must be ruined and then all of them must be gathered at the place and be purported to them that they do not have any respect in our country. They must be expelled forever from our country.
In the same period, Luther's followers sought to enforce his teachings, and in 1572 AD, they closed their temples in Berlin and even this tribe was banned of entering to a number of places in the city.
What Luther said about Jews as the hype and his grace to them led to exaggeration and hyperbole, because he wanted to attract them to accept Christianity and Protestantism. But when he saw what actually happened is that instead of accepting Jews to Christianity, they were trying to bring Christians to their faith, then he said in his book of "about the Jews and their lies":
Who does prevent the Jewish people to return to their land? No one. We provide what they need for the journey; it is only because we will be relieved from them. They really are a big burden and haunt on us
Thus, with despair of Protestantism movement to Christianize the Jews, the song of their invitation was played and they immigrated to Palestine, and this was the beginning of the Christian Zionism movement
The followers of Luther, after more than four centuries of his negative statements against the Jews, they proceeded to have a formal apology from them. The International Union of Luther’s followers, at a conference which was held in Stockholm, Sweden, on 11- 13 July 1983, they announced their disbelief and disobedience to all words which were expressed by Luther about the Jews
On the other hand, the ninth Conference of the American Heads of Churches was formed in the city of St. Louis, in July 1983, more than 1,100 delegates from the two million and seven hundred thousand Americans announced their condolence and disaffiliation of contemporary Lutherans to the extremist statements which were expressed by Luther towards Jews.
Luther established the Protestant religion, and created and attitude and a new belief in the Christianity. His creative action was: "The creation of a formal expression of the Christian Bible is that man is as a free person in front of God's sovereign. Protestantism insists that the eternal prosperity of the man is just depended on God's absolute power, and anything cannot be between God and man.
Protestantism literally means the opposition (Protestation). Protestantism, with an invitation to freedom of thought and expression, caused to make the context for emerging of many different schools and sects in Christianity.
As discussed, the foundations of this religion are the serious attention and a new approach to the Old Testament (the Torah). This book is mainly about the history of the Jewish people and it was undergone many changes and modifications throughout the history and in the first AD century found its final form.
Protestant relied on Hebrew text of the Torah, but it made some removing and additions in. England in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century, after the rejection of Catholicism and eliminate the influence of Spain, became the greatest colonial power and with accumulation of the unregulated wealth conquered many lands. This movement was symmetry with the religious reform. Incoming reforms, with a new definition of the man's relationship between the God and the Bible, caused a person to be independent of clergy outside the church and their liberation came into the realization. Since, it had a duty to interpret the Bible for itself.
Of course, another factor plunged the England in the Biblical culture and Protestantism, because this could have a significant economic gains to a country that attempted to rapidly grab to achieve the peak of interest and pleasure after the Renaissance developments.
According to the Bible, the Catholic Church stated that usury is illegal, but it was considered allowed in the Torah. Thus, the country's approach to the Protestantism and consequently to the culture and the teachings of Torah led to bring the new ways for acquiring of wealth and accumulation of capital.
Mrs. "Barbara Tuchman", a Jewish historian, wrote in the book of "the holy and Sword":
When Henry VIII, the king of England in 1538 AD, commanded to translate the Old Testament in English in order to be available to the masses, in fact, combined the Jewish history and customs and laws with English culture and brought the culture of his direct influence for three century. This Torah, was known as the national Torah of England and more than any other books, affected the British society, and many of the stories of Jewish history became the main material of English culture and literature.
Tuchman said: "the stories of the Old Testament were the daily feed of Protestantism rationality and the believers of this religion studied and memorized them, so that did not consider Nazareth Jesus as the son of Mary, but they considered him as one of the prophets of Israel.
He stressed that "without the biblical culture impressions, it was not clear that British government issued the Balfour Declaration in 1917.
Grace Halsell", a prominent American journalist, writes:"
"The truth is that the change in attitude of Christianity to the Jewish materials, began with the emergence of Protestantism in the sixteenth century".
This movement denied the exclusive right of the Church to interpret the Bible, and mutually based the return and review of the Bible and the literal and ostensible interpretation of Jewish religious texts on his own motion.
Since then, the attitude of Christians to Judaism gradually changed, and trends in Judaism began among the Western Christians.
Since the early seventeenth century, Protestants considered the Jews as a privileged nation, and considered Jewish immigration to Palestine as a prerequisite for reappearance of Jesus Christ. They help the Jews to ensure this goal in order to accelerate the advent of Jewish emancipation and peace messenger, Jesus Christ, and considered it as God fulfill.
Since the late sixteen century, many scholars and artists were influenced by the culture and mythology of the Torah and the Old Testament was their source of inspiration. Protestant space fit a wide field for the Jews to enter the world of art and literature. From now, the Torah was not only as a religious book, but also was as a resource for teaching and learning morality.
Thus, in the time of the Renaissance, the Jews became one of the pillars of European culture and traditions and teachings of Torah, was the source of inspiration for many Western poets, writers and painters.
Today, the greatest museums around the world have a huge collection of paintings left by the Protestant Christian artists with their works, perpetuate the religious reform phenomenon of Martin Luther alive. Protestant artists, unlike the Christian painters who pictured the saints, paid to the illustrations of tales and stories of the prophets of Israel. The name Rembrandt (1606- 1669), Dutch painter of the Protestant religion, is most noteworthy than the others. He was inspired by the teachings of the Old Testament, portrayed many of the scenes of biblical stories. He traced the figure of Abraham, Jacob, Sha'ul, Samson, Esther and David was completely under the influence of Torah.
In literature, the classical heroes of Greece were gradually replaced by the prophets and prominent people of Israel.
On the other hand, a number of European philosophers and scientists also believed in the course of the necessity of Jewish immigration to Palestine and affirmed in their statements and works. Among them, the name of "John Locke", the British experimental philosopher, "Isaac Newton", who discovered the law of gravity, 'Joseph Priestley", the famous chemist, "john jack Rousseau", the famous French writer and "Pascal", the French physicist are noteworthy.
As can be seen, the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries AD were the era of the spread of religious ideas of the Jewish settlement in Palestine. But the way, the Jews strongly rejected these comments and said that their settlement in Palestine would only depend on God and believed that this job and the establishment of the Israeli state will be happened with the advent of the Messiah (Christ redemptive of the Jews).
However, the rise of Protestantism met with a warm and extensive welcome by the Jews because the movement causes a rift and hostility among their enemies (i.e., Christians). This approach and welcome about protestants is continued so that they officially declared "Protestants although are not Jewish, but are the sect affiliated to the Jews.
