In 1335, solar calendar, the cultural office of east Azerbaijan came up with an idea of a m museum. Since there was no proper building to use for this purpose, 200 pieces of historic works were temporarily showcased in a hall in one of the state institutes located near the national library in Tabriz and this way the base of the plan was initiated.
In early 1337, solar calendar, a building was started and was completed in 1341. In Mehr of the same year it was inaugurated. The museum has anthropology hall, archeology hall, and Mashrutiyat, constitutionality era , hall. The first floor is dedicated for the old objects from the prehistoric era to the Ghajar period.
On the second floor the old objects and coins treasure are put into show. In anthropology section, the lifestyle, livelihood, clothing and costumes, traditions and customs of the people in different parts of the county are displayed.
Mashrutiyat, constitution, section contains photos and documents related to Mashrutiyat revolution as well as works by Sattar Khan and Bagher Khan, the national heroes.
Currently, 11,000 pieces of cultural objects are recorded which are kept in the museum.Only 2,300 of which are open to public. Some of the works are the results of the excavations carried out in Mushlan, Hassanlu, Ghara Tappe, Khosrow Shah, and Marlik . Some date back to 4,000 years BC.
Also on the lower floor the statues of Ahad Husseini, which reflect the human's life in the contemporary age, are displayed.
