Subterranean canals have long been in use and were a way to exploit underground water resources.
In the past, over 500 canals were operating in the city of Khameneh to water gardens and farms and they also supplied drinkable water.
Currently, their number is decreasing to less than 200 canals throughout the whole province of East Azerbaijan as a result of the development in new ways of exploiting waters of deep wells in the south part of the region on the edge of Oromiyeh Lake.
Of this number Khameneh owns16 canals.
Several hundreds years ago, the drinkable water was transmitted throughout the city by means of earthen pipes and ran in the locals' houses. The existence of six hundred deep wells and pulling out a large amount of water caused the canals to dry up.
