Once upon a time, in ancient times, there was a king who had forty sons. One day the sons went together to their father and said they wished to marry forty girls who were sisters together. The king said he could not cope with such a work, and they should do themselves. He said that he would give a horse and some bags of money to each brother. He wanted the brothers to go around the world and search and find the girls they liked.
The brothers arranged their affairs together at night and in the next morning all the forty brothers rode their horses and moved toward the desert back to the city. They went and went until it was dark. They decided to lodge somewhere for that night to rest. The found a quiet suitable corner and tented there. The youngest brother, who was in fact half-brother, was to remain awake to keep the fire kindled in order both their place to remain warm and the wild animals to be frightened to close them.
The youngest brother sat till the midnight and kept the fire kindled. But due to tiredness he fell asleep and the fire was extinguished. When it was cold he suddenly woke up and noticed that the fire had been extinguished. He was frightened and at once he went to find a fire to bring it to ignite the woods. He looked carefully the around area and saw from a far distance a flame of fire. He said himself that he would go there and would get a fire and would bring it here. He got going. When he was going he saw a man having some threads and was wrapping them. As he reached the man asked him why he was wrapping these threads. He replied after finishing his wrapping, these threads would have become a ball and it would be the morning, and afterwards he would began to unwrap that ball and that work would last until night. He said that act was his daily work. As the king's son heard this, took the thread from him and closed strongly the hands of him by them and fell him a corner and kept his way toward the fire.
He went and saw that there was a fire in front of a big house and a huge man was warming himself by the fire. The boy went ahead and greeted. The demon answered and said he was lucky that he had greeted him, otherwise the demon would kill him immediately. Then the demon asked him why he had come there. The boy said he had come to take the fire. The demon wanted him to escape as soon as possible because he had forty children that if they would return back would kill him at once. But the speech of the demon had not finished yet that the children reached. The king's son was very frightened and went to a corner to hide.
The demon's oldest son looked around and said to his brothers that he felt the smell of human being there. The he searched well around and found the king's son. The boy who was such frightened as his tongue tied. But the demon's son said him that due to his youth he would not kill him provided that he would do an act for them that only human being would be able to do. He said that at a certain city there exited a king having forty daughters. He said that those demons were forty brothers who had fallen in love of those forty daughters. But the king had a big black dog due to it no one dared to close the king's palace within a distance less than four miles. The boy must go and kill the dog in order that they could go there and bring the daughters of the king.
The boy accepted the demon's condition but wanted them to take him there. He and the demon's sons got going and went and went up to four miles to the palace. There, the boy left the demon's sons and he went himself toward the palace. When he approached there, he saw a big black dog whose eyes were fiery. The boy trusted in God and took his sword out and killed the dog by hitting his sword to the mouth of it. When he was not worried of the dog, went until he closed the wall of the palace. At fast he threw lasso and went up the wall. From there he signaled the demons, and they came down the wall. The boy pulled them upwards one by one using the rope. Each demon reached up, the boy cut off his head and cut his ears putting them into a handkerchief and droppedhis corpse on the roof.
As he did so, he came down the wall carrying eighty ears and went back through the same way he had come. But he thought that if the demon understood that he had killed all forty sons of him, he would make his days black. Thus he preferred to go and kill the demon himself too. With this intention, the king's son returned back to the demon and said that his fire had be extinguished and he felt cold and requested him some of his fire. As soon as the demon bent to take fire to give him, the boy pushed him with all his strength into the fire and cut off his head by the strike of his sword. The he went to the man he closed his hands and asked him why that night would not become morning. The man answered that nigh would not become morning even it lasted one hundred years as long as his hands were closed, because it was necessary to wrap the threads before it can become morning. The boy wanted the man to calculate whether or not he could return back to his brothers before morning if he opened his hands. The man looked at the threads and answered he had enough time and could do his work without any worry.
The boy opened the hand of the man and got going. As he was going he gathered firewood in order to take them for igniting fire. In the morning, when the brothers woke up, none of them knew anything about what happened during the night before, and only said bravo to his youngest brother. All the brothers got going.
The youngest brother took them to the same city the king of which had forty daughters. When they reached the city they saw that the announcer was announcing that the king's officers were following the person who had killed the big black dog of the king and also the forty demons in order to take him to the king. The oldest brother went ahead and said that he had killed. The announcer asked him who believed him and how he could prove his assertion at the king. The king's oldest son who noticed that he could not prove his assertion kept his head down and returned back. Some other brothers also went ahead and claimed similar assertions but since they gave untrue signs no one believed them and they returned back ashamedly. At last the youngest brother went ahead and said that he had killed the dog and the demons and said them the signs of the dog and demons and palace. The announcer got glad and said the officers that he found the main killer. They came and took all the forty brothers to the king. At the presence of the king, the little brother told all the story of the night before and took the eighty cut ears out of his handkerchief and presented them to the king.
The king became sure that he had done those acts. So he said him: "Bravo! I have forty daughters. You can marry each one you desire." The little brother bowed and said: "We are forty brothers. If you permit, we marry your daughters by age." The king agreed and ordered the same day to decorate the city. They celebrated seven days and seven nights and at the seventh nigh the forty brothers married the forty sisters.
The brides and bridegrooms were some days busy to joy and mirth.
Then they went to the king to get permission to go to their city. The king at first was not content her daughters to go, but when he thought well he let them to go. The boys took the girls and go toward their city. They went and went until it was night. The found some suitable place to lodge to sleep at night in order to continue in the morning. Suddenly they heard a voice saying that the demon who was guard of water would came that night with a big water skin to avenge the murder of the demon and his forty sons and would flood them.
