Zionism is taken from the word "Zion" or "Sion". Zion is the name of a mountain in Jerusalem that Jews know it as the birthplace of the Prophet David. In other words, Zion is one of the four important mountains in the sacred city that Jews believe it has acquired sanctity historically because of presence of "the Jehovah" the God of the Jews in the land. Zion is synonym for Jerusalem and the Land of Israel as well. Although the thought of returning to Zion with the suffix "ism" has become a school has become, date back to the year 586 BC, the year of the dispersal of the Jews, but the term was used for the first time by a German author Nathan Byrne Baum in Austria (Switzerland) during a public debate on July 23, 1892.
Nathan Byrne Baum rose the term Zionism in an article that was published in 1886 AD. The word meant a concept of "restore the Jewish people in Palestine" or in the words of a writer who focused to call it "Land of Israel".
About five years before writing this article, he said in his speech on November 6th, 1891 to explain the concept of Zionism:
Zionism means establishing an organization that in addition to the party (Lovers of Zion), which already exists, includes ethnic - political organizations.
In the other event (the first Zionist Congress) (1897) he stated:
From the perspective of Zionism, ethnicity, race and nation are objects.
Thus, he implies a redefinition of ration of "the Jewish people" that in the past, it referred to religious - ethnic groups and from then it referred ethnic groups (in the ordinary sense of the time) and the religious aspect of it was removed.
Accordingly, a movement was formed that sought to achieve its goals by organized political activity rather than donations.
But after the first Zionist Congress, the term Zionism became clear: the invitation which the Zionist Organization advocated and the efforts that the organization did in this regard. According to this definition, Zionist is a person who believes in Basel congress program. After that, the meanings and implications of words found other details. "Political Zionism" and "practical Zionism" appeared following the emergence of "combing Zionism". Each of the "Zionism parties" has methods of its own, although they all have one final destination.
Then "cultural Zionism" and "religious Zionism" appeared that added "ghetto" dimension to Zionism. Then "democratic Zionism", "worker", "return" and "radical" Zionism were gained. "Diaspora Zionism" emerged after 1948.
Ivanoph also defines Zionism as follows: Sion or Zion is the name of the mountain in Jerusalem upon which Temple or Temple of the children of Israel was built; therefore, Zionism literally means "adherence to the principles of focus of the children of Israel in Palestine."
Gholam Husain Masaheb dictionary described the word Zion as follows:
It is part of Jerusalem which has been defined as the City of the Prophet David in the Holy Book. The word is attributed to Jebusites palace which is located on the southeast hills of Jerusalem and Prophet David conquered it, and erected a local palace. The word Zion is referring to Jerusalem, and the Promised Land, and messianic dreams of the children of Israel, and the term Zionism (the movement to reconvert Jewish nation to united people) is derived from that.
Another definition is that Zion is the name of a mountain in Jerusalem and in general refers to the land of Jerusalem. The word Zionist means lover of the Mount Sion. Historically, the term Zionism had been used in both religious and political arena. In Jewish religious teachings, Mount Zion and the land of Jerusalem were respected because of divine revelation and appointing the prophets. As it is the same for Muslims and Christians. Before the Renaissance, political Zionism had no meaning. Zionist referred to a person that has chosen monastic life due to attachment to Mount Zion and the land of Jerusalem, and he is worshiping in the land by settling in Mount Zion and quitting material life; the life (needed money) of such people was obtained by others in Judaism.
However, Zionism is separated from Judaism. Judaism is a religious system, while Zionism is a thought movement that has the following characteristics:
1. There are radical racist ideas in Zionist thinking.
2. Particular attention of Zionists to the use of capital and money for purposes.
3. Resorting to violence or any other means for setting goals.
4. Victimization of many ethnicities, including Jews in the colonial greed.
5. Constant contact with the superpowers to use them to consolidate the foundations of authority.
6. Showing Judaism and Zionism as oppressed ones using the titles like burning the Jews in the fire.
7. Control of the mass media and newspapers as the primary means to dominate the world.
In continue we will refer to terms in a number of Latin encyclopedias about the context of Zionism:
1. Robert of France: Zion is name of the mountain in Jerusalem. It is religious and political movement that aims to form a government for the Jews (New Zion) in Palestine before formation of the state of Israel.
2. . Larousse of France: Zion is one of the hills of Jerusalem.
3. . American Webster: a movement for Jewish immigration, colonialism and nationalism in Palestine.
4. . Oxford Dictionary: Zionism is a political movement that originally is associated with the establishment of an independent state for the Jewish people and now it is about development of the state of Israel.
