Plans for Israel in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries
Concurrent with the rise of British colonial activities that were considered financial support of the engine of Jews, some books and treatises were published in the United Kingdom which had the theme of the return of the Jews to the Holy Land and to find a homeland for Jews.
Christian Zionists began extensive activities in this field. Dr. John Jourtin (1698-1770) is historian and critic of church affairs and author of "Erasmus biography" that was published in London between 1758-60.
By writing various books on issues related to the Jewish people he induced in a way that the survival of the people who have tolerated many long suffering and miseries, makes man think God retained them for especial purpose and a high aim.
Thomas Newton 3 (17041-782), Bishop of Bristol City, (1761) and from influential clergy of his era, in defense of Jewish immigration to Palestine was more overwhelming than any other nationalist Jew. He believed that the Jews will be established in Palestine. At the same time, he emphasized on the dignity and the need of Jews' excellence for around the world, and he has condemned anti-Jewish prejudice.
King Edward (1725-1807) is author of various books and another Christian Zionist British treatise-writer who in one of his works entitled "A Discourse on predictions" emphasizes on a particular point that is return of the Jews "as Jewish" to sacred land.
Samuel Horsley (1733-1806) was bishop of Rochester city (1793-1802) and the priest in the "St. Aspash» Church (1802-1806), knew the book "Discourse on predictions" by Edward King so important that in a letter to Edward King he replied some of the issues of the book.
Samuel Horsley addressed to King Edward and he wrote: "we agree with you," "some expressions especially in the Book of Zechariah clearly refer to the Jewish settlement in the Holy Land ... and this is a point that I accept ..." the invitation did not face immediate welcome, however, the political idea of the return of Jewish people to the holy land raised in different periods in Britain and other English-speaking countries again and again.
Primary attempts to establish autonomous Jewish colonies took place in early times in American history.
In 1621, the Dutch West Indies Company gave 10 pieces of land on the Curaçao Island to Joseph Nonferedafonska to establish Jewish settlements there. But the plan failed.
Some Jews fled to Brazil in 1654, and they prepared a plan for their settlement in Suriname (in Latin America) which was a British colony at the time. The project is remembered by privileges granted to the Jews for going to "Wild cassette".
French West India Company in 1659 allowed David Nasi, of the Portuguese Jews, to establish a Jewish colony in Kaien (center of French Guiana).
Later, other Jewish settlement plans were presented. For example, in 1749, Marshall Dosax thought to establish a Jewish country in South America and be king of the country. Marx Jay Kohler writes in his book "Zionist sketches in America": a little information has remained of Marshall Dosax's Plan in the filed of the establishment of Jewish settlements and it is impossible to say whether he had abandoned the plan before his death or not. ... »
The wife military commander in Anspak (a region in the Netherlands) describing their ridiculous stories, "says his wife that dreamed of kingdom: looked around and found out that all thrones are occupied in the reign. He then turned his attention to a nation that did not have neither a king nor a country during the past seventeenth centuries; a nation that was scattered everywhere, and was alien everywhere... the strange plan preoccupied his mind for a long time. It is not clear that to what extent did Jewish people made cooperation with military commander Anspak or where negotiations between them lead to. The plan which he attempted to implement was never materialized, but the plan famous and at that time and his friends pulled his leg in this case. "
John Persval (1711-1770) Count of Egmont was trying to gather the Jews and be their king.
Shortly after the adoption of the Constitution of Pennsylvania on September 28, 1776 a German Jew, whose name and place is not specified, wrote in a letter to the President of the Continental Congress...
"A number of German Jews intend to live in the United States... Please, President of the Congress, write your opinion in this regard,.
Edward King (1795-1837) Weiss Kenneth Kings Brow, the eldest son of George Ariel Kingston the third (1771-1839) carefully developed, printed and published a valuable work entitled "Antiquities of Mexico" in 9 volumes and 60 pages of the Volume 10 of the series between 1848-1830 in London, and he added many footnotes to it. In this series Edward King raises the idea of establishing a colony of the Jews in Mexico.
Here it is necessary to refer to an American who is undoubtedly influenced by British puritanism and has shown the theology of Purists for Jews. He is John Adams (1735-1825) the second President of America and was a famous patriot of the revolution. He was one of the most fervent defenders of the Zionist idea. John Adams wrote in a letter to Major Mordecai Manuel (1785-1851): "seriously I wish the Jews to be established once again in Judea (the southern part of Palestine) as an independent nation because I believe that the wisest people of this nation played their role in the development and flourishing of philosophy of their time and in case of achieving an independent state and ending the persecution, soon they will abandon some of their unpleasant and unconventional traits... “But in order that people do not imagine that he demands the return of Jews to Palestine to keep them away from the United States or that he calls for limiting their rights in the US he adds: "I wish that the Jewish people world benefit from all the citizenship points all over the world. This country (the US) has taken numerous actions on this issue and I call for more actions and removing the narrow thoughts on religion, government, and business."
