The uses of the word''arsh'' in Quran
1. Throne
Quran states
فَمَكَثَ غَیْرَ بَعِیدٍ فَقَالَ أَحَطتُ بِمَا لَمْ تُحِطْ بِهِ وَجِئْتُكَ مِن سَبَإٍ بِنَبَإٍ یَقِینٍ
But the Hoopoe tarried not far: he (came up and) said: "I have compassed (territory) which thou hast not compassed, and I have come to thee from Saba with tidings true''.
إِنِّی وَجَدتُّ امْرَأَةً تَمْلِكُهُمْ وَأُوتِیَتْ مِن كُلِّ شَیْءٍ وَلَهَا عَرْشٌ عَظِیمٌ
I found (there) a woman ruling over them and provided with every requisite; and she has a magnificent throne''.
قَالَ یَا أَیُّهَا الْمَلَأُ أَیُّكُمْ یَأْتِینِی بِعَرْشِهَا قَبْلَ أَن یَأْتُونِی مُسْلِمِینَ
He said (to his own men): "Ye chiefs! which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me in submission''.
وَرَفَعَ أَبَوَیْهِ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ وَخَرُّوا لَهُ سُجَّدًا ۖ وَقَالَ یَا أَبَتِ هَٰذَا تَأْوِیلُ رُؤْیَایَ مِن قَبْلُ قَدْ جَعَلَهَا رَبِّی حَقًّا ۖ وَقَدْ أَحْسَنَ بِی إِذْ أَخْرَجَنِی مِنَ السِّجْنِ وَجَاءَ بِكُم مِّنَ الْبَدْوِ مِن بَعْدِ أَن نَّزَغَ الشَّیْطَانُ بَیْنِی وَبَیْنَ إِخْوَتِی ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّی لَطِیفٌ لِّمَا یَشَاءُ ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْعَلِیمُ الْحَكِیمُ
And he raised his parents high on the throne (of dignity), and they fell down in prostration, (all) before him. He said: "O my father! this is the fulfilment of my vision of old! Allah hath made it come true! He was indeed good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you (all here) out of the desert, (even) after Satan had sown enmity between me and my brothers. Verily my Lord understandeth best the mysteries of all that He planneth to do, for verily He is full of knowledge and wisdom.
2. The roof of houses
Quran states
أَوْ كَالَّذِی مَرَّ عَلَىٰ قَرْیَةٍ وَهِیَ خَاوِیَةٌ عَلَىٰ عُرُوشِهَا قَالَ أَنَّىٰ یُحْیِی هَٰذِهِ اللَّهُ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا ۖ فَأَمَاتَهُ اللَّهُ مِائَةَ عَامٍ ثُمَّ بَعَثَهُ ۖ قَالَ كَمْ لَبِثْتَ ۖ قَالَ لَبِثْتُ یَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْضَ یَوْمٍ ۖ قَالَ بَل لَّبِثْتَ مِائَةَ عَامٍ فَانظُرْ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِكَ وَشَرَابِكَ لَمْ یَتَسَنَّهْ ۖ وَانظُرْ إِلَىٰ حِمَارِكَ وَلِنَجْعَلَكَ آیَةً لِّلنَّاسِ ۖ وَانظُرْ إِلَى الْعِظَامِ كَیْفَ نُنشِزُهَا ثُمَّ نَكْسُوهَا لَحْمًا ۚ فَلَمَّا تَبَیَّنَ لَهُ قَالَ أَعْلَمُ أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیْءٍ قَدِیرٌ
Or (take) the similitude of one who passed by a hamlet, all in ruins to its roofs. He said: "Oh! how shall Allah bring it (ever) to life, after (this) its death?" but Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him up (again). He said: "How long didst thou tarry (thus)?" He said: (Perhaps) a day or part of a day." He said: "Nay, thou hast tarried thus a hundred years; but look at thy food and thy drink; they show no signs of age; and look at thy donkey: And that We may make of thee a sign unto the people, Look further at the bones, how We bring them together and clothe them with flesh." When this was shown clearly to him, he said: "I know that Allah hath power over all things''.
فَكَأَیِّن مِّن قَرْیَةٍ أَهْلَكْنَاهَا وَهِیَ ظَالِمَةٌ فَهِیَ خَاوِیَةٌ عَلَىٰ عُرُوشِهَا وَبِئْرٍ مُّعَطَّلَةٍ وَقَصْرٍ مَّشِیدٍ
How many populations have We destroyed, which were given to wrong-doing? They tumbled down on their roofs. And how many wells are lying idle and neglected, and castles lofty and well-built.
3. The scaffoldings of the tree of grapes
Quran states
وَاضْرِبْ لَهُم مَّثَلًا رَّجُلَیْنِ جَعَلْنَا لِأَحَدِهِمَا جَنَّتَیْنِ مِنْ أَعْنَابٍ وَحَفَفْنَاهُمَا بِنَخْلٍ وَجَعَلْنَا بَیْنَهُمَا زَرْعًا
Set forth to them the parable of two men: for one of them We provided two gardens of grape-vines and surrounded them with date palms; in between the two We placed corn-fields.
وَهُوَ الَّذِی أَنشَأَ جَنَّاتٍ مَّعْرُوشَاتٍ وَغَیْرَ مَعْرُوشَاتٍ وَالنَّخْلَ وَالزَّرْعَ مُخْتَلِفًا أُكُلُهُ وَالزَّیْتُونَ وَالرُّمَّانَ مُتَشَابِهًا وَغَیْرَ مُتَشَابِهٍ ۚ كُلُوا مِن ثَمَرِهِ إِذَا أَثْمَرَ وَآتُوا حَقَّهُ یَوْمَ حَصَادِهِ ۖ وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا ۚ إِنَّهُ لَا یُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِینَ
It is He Who produceth gardens, with trellises and without, and dates, and tilth with produce of all kinds, and olives and pomegranates, similar (in kind) and different (in variety): eat of their fruit in their season, but render the dues that are proper on the day that the harvest is gathered. But waste not by excess: for Allah loveth not the wasters.
4. The center of the existence and its events
Quran states
رَفِیعُ الدَّرَجَاتِ ذُو الْعَرْشِ یُلْقِی الرُّوحَ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ عَلَىٰ مَن یَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ لِیُنذِرَ یَوْمَ التَّلَاقِ
Raised high above ranks (or degrees), (He is) the Lord of the Throne (of Authority): by His Command doth He send the Spirit (of inspiration) to any of His servants he pleases, that it may warn (men) of the Day of Mutual Meeting.
قُل لَّوْ كَانَ مَعَهُ آلِهَةٌ كَمَا یَقُولُونَ إِذًا لَّابْتَغَوْا إِلَىٰ ذِی الْعَرْشِ سَبِیلًا
Say: If there had been (other) gods with Him, as they say,- behold, they would certainly have sought out a way to the Lord of the Throne.
ذِی قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِی الْعَرْشِ مَكِینٍ
Endued with Power, with rank before the Lord of the Throne.
الَّذِینَ یَحْمِلُونَ الْعَرْشَ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهُ یُسَبِّحُونَ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّهِمْ وَیُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ وَیَسْتَغْفِرُونَ لِلَّذِینَ آمَنُوا رَبَّنَا وَسِعْتَ كُلَّ شَیْءٍ رَّحْمَةً وَعِلْمًا فَاغْفِرْ لِلَّذِینَ تَابُوا وَاتَّبَعُوا سَبِیلَكَ وَقِهِمْ عَذَابَ الْجَحِیمِ
Those who sustain the Throne (of Allah) and those around it Sing Glory and Praise to their Lord; believe in Him; and implore Forgiveness for those who believe: "Our Lord! Thy Reach is over all things, in Mercy and Knowledge. Forgive, then, those who turn in Repentance, and follow Thy Path; and preserve them from the Penalty of the Blazing Fire.
وَالْمَلَكُ عَلَىٰ أَرْجَائِهَا ۚ وَیَحْمِلُ عَرْشَ رَبِّكَ فَوْقَهُمْ یَوْمَئِذٍ ثَمَانِیَةٌ
And the angels will be on its sides, and eight will, that Day, bear the Throne of thy Lord above them.
الر ۚ تِلْكَ آیَاتُ الْكِتَابِ الْحَكِیمِ
A.L.R. These are the ayats of the Book of Wisdom.
أَكَانَ لِلنَّاسِ عَجَبًا أَنْ أَوْحَیْنَا إِلَىٰ رَجُلٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَنْ أَنذِرِ النَّاسَ وَبَشِّرِ الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا أَنَّ لَهُمْ قَدَمَ صِدْقٍ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ ۗ قَالَ الْكَافِرُونَ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَسَاحِرٌ مُّبِینٌ
Is it a matter of wonderment to men that We have sent Our inspiration to a man from among themselves?- that he should warn mankind (of their danger), and give the good news to the Believers that they have before their Lord the lofty rank of truth. (But) say the Unbelievers: "This is indeed an evident sorcerer''.
إِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ اللَّهُ الَّذِی خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامٍ ثُمَّ اسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ ۖ یُدَبِّرُ الْأَمْرَ ۖ مَا مِن شَفِیعٍ إِلَّا مِن بَعْدِ إِذْنِهِ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمُ اللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ فَاعْبُدُوهُ ۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
Verily your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority), regulating and governing all things. No intercessor (can plead with Him) except after His leave (hath been obtained). This is Allah your Lord; Him therefore serve ye: will ye not receive admonition.
إِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ اللَّهُ الَّذِی خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامٍ ثُمَّ اسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ یُغْشِی اللَّیْلَ النَّهَارَ یَطْلُبُهُ حَثِیثًا وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ وَالنُّجُومَ مُسَخَّرَاتٍ بِأَمْرِهِ ۗ أَلَا لَهُ الْخَلْقُ وَالْأَمْرُ ۗ تَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِینَ
Your Guardian-Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority): He draweth the night as a veil o´er the day, each seeking the other in rapid succession: He created the sun, the moon, and the stars, (all) governed by laws under His command. Is it not His to create and to govern? Blessed be Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds.
اللَّهُ الَّذِی خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَیْنَهُمَا فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامٍ ثُمَّ اسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ ۖ مَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِهِ مِن وَلِیٍّ وَلَا شَفِیعٍ ۚ أَفَلَا تَتَذَكَّرُونَ
It is Allah Who has created the heavens and the earth, and all between them, in six Days, and is firmly established on the Throne (of Authority): ye have none, besides Him, to protect or intercede (for you): will ye not then receive admonition.
الَّذِی خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَیْنَهُمَا فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامٍ ثُمَّ اسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ ۚ الرَّحْمَٰنُ فَاسْأَلْ بِهِ خَبِیرًا
He Who created the heavens and the earth and all that is between, in six days, and is firmly established on the Throne (of Authority): Allah Most Gracious: ask thou, then, about Him of any acquainted (with such things).
إِنَّ اللَّهَ یُمْسِكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ أَن تَزُولَا ۚ وَلَئِن زَالَتَا إِنْ أَمْسَكَهُمَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ مِّن بَعْدِهِ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ حَلِیمًا غَفُورًا
It is Allah Who sustains the heavens and the earth, lest they cease (to function): and if they should fail, there is none - not one - can sustain them thereafter: Verily He is Most Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving.
فَاطِرُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۚ جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا وَمِنَ الْأَنْعَامِ أَزْوَاجًا ۖ یَذْرَؤُكُمْ فِیهِ ۚ لَیْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَیْءٌ ۖ وَهُوَ السَّمِیعُ الْبَصِیرُ
(He is) the Creator of the heavens and the earth: He has made for you pairs from among yourselves, and pairs among cattle: by this means does He multiply you: there is nothing whatever like unto Him, and He is the One that hears and sees (all things).
إِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ اللَّهُ الَّذِی خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامٍ ثُمَّ اسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ ۖ یُدَبِّرُ الْأَمْرَ ۖ مَا مِن شَفِیعٍ إِلَّا مِن بَعْدِ إِذْنِهِ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمُ اللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ فَاعْبُدُوهُ ۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
Verily your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority), regulating and governing all things. فَمَنِ ابْتَغَىٰ وَرَاءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْعَادُونَ
.But those whose desires exceed those limits are transgressors

هُوَ الَّذِی خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامٍ ثُمَّ اسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ ۚ یَعْلَمُ مَا یَلِجُ فِی الْأَرْضِ وَمَا یَخْرُجُ مِنْهَا وَمَا یَنزِلُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ وَمَا یَعْرُجُ فِیهَا ۖ وَهُوَ مَعَكُمْ أَیْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ ۚ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِیرٌ
He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in Six Days, and is moreover firmly established on the Throne (of Authority). He knows what enters within the earth and what comes forth out of it, what comes down from heaven and what mounts up to it. And He is with you wheresoever ye may be. And Allah sees well all that ye do.
مَا لَكُمْ أَلَّا تُنفِقُوا فِی سَبِیلِ اللَّهِ وَلِلَّهِ مِیرَاثُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۚ لَا یَسْتَوِی مِنكُم مَّنْ أَنفَقَ مِن قَبْلِ الْفَتْحِ وَقَاتَلَ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ أَعْظَمُ دَرَجَةً مِّنَ الَّذِینَ أَنفَقُوا مِن بَعْدُ وَقَاتَلُوا ۚ وَكُلًّا وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الْحُسْنَىٰ ۚ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِیرٌ
And what cause have ye why ye should not spend in the cause of Allah?- For to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. Not equal among you are those who spent (freely) and fought, before the Victory, (with those who did so later). Those are higher in rank than those who spent (freely) and fought afterwards. But to all has Allah promised a goodly (reward). And Allah is well acquainted with all that ye do.
یَوْمَ تَرَى الْمُؤْمِنِینَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ یَسْعَىٰ نُورُهُم بَیْنَ أَیْدِیهِمْ وَبِأَیْمَانِهِم بُشْرَاكُمُ الْیَوْمَ جَنَّاتٌ تَجْرِی مِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِینَ فِیهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِیمُ
One Day shalt thou see the believing men and the believing women- how their Light runs forward before them and by their right hands: (their greeting will be): "Good News for you this Day! Gardens beneath which flow rivers! to dwell therein for aye! This is indeed the highest Achievement''.
یَوْمَ یَقُولُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ وَالْمُنَافِقَاتُ لِلَّذِینَ آمَنُوا انظُرُونَا نَقْتَبِسْ مِن نُّورِكُمْ قِیلَ ارْجِعُوا وَرَاءَكُمْ فَالْتَمِسُوا نُورًا فَضُرِبَ بَیْنَهُم بِسُورٍ لَّهُ بَابٌ بَاطِنُهُ فِیهِ الرَّحْمَةُ وَظَاهِرُهُ مِن قِبَلِهِ الْعَذَابُ
One Day will the Hypocrites- men and women - say to the Believers: "Wait for us! Let us borrow (a Light) from your Light!" It will be said: "Turn ye back to your rear! then seek a Light (where ye can)!" So a wall will be put up betwixt them, with a gate therein. Within it will be Mercy throughout, and without it, all alongside, will be (Wrath and) Punishment.
اعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ یُحْیِی الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا ۚ قَدْ بَیَّنَّا لَكُمُ الْآیَاتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
Know ye (all) that Allah giveth life to the earth after its death! already have We shown the Signs plainly to you, that ye may learn wisdom.
