The uses of the word ''om'' in Quran
1. Relative mother
Quran states
خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا وَأَنزَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ الْأَنْعَامِ ثَمَانِیَةَ أَزْوَاجٍ ۚ یَخْلُقُكُمْ فِی بُطُونِ أُمَّهَاتِكُمْ خَلْقًا مِّن بَعْدِ خَلْقٍ فِی ظُلُمَاتٍ ثَلَاثٍ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمُ اللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ ۖ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُصْرَفُونَ
He created you (all) from a single person: then created, of like nature, his mate; and he sent down for you eight head of cattle in pairs: He makes you, in the wombs of your mothers, in stages, one after another, in three veils of darkness. such is Allah, your Lord and Cherisher: to Him belongs (all) dominion. There is no god but He: then how are ye turned away (from your true Centre).
الَّذِینَ یُظَاهِرُونَ مِنكُم مِّن نِّسَائِهِم مَّا هُنَّ أُمَّهَاتِهِمْ ۖ إِنْ أُمَّهَاتُهُمْ إِلَّا اللَّائِی وَلَدْنَهُمْ ۚ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَیَقُولُونَ مُنكَرًا مِّنَ الْقَوْلِ وَزُورًا ۚ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَعَفُوٌّ غَفُورٌ
If any men among you divorce their wives by Zihar (calling them mothers), they cannot be their mothers: None can be their mothers except those who gave them birth. And in fact they use words (both) iniquitous and false: but truly Allah is one that blots out (sins), and forgives (again and again).
حُرِّمَتْ عَلَیْكُمْ أُمَّهَاتُكُمْ وَبَنَاتُكُمْ وَأَخَوَاتُكُمْ وَعَمَّاتُكُمْ وَخَالَاتُكُمْ وَبَنَاتُ الْأَخِ وَبَنَاتُ الْأُخْتِ وَأُمَّهَاتُكُمُ اللَّاتِی أَرْضَعْنَكُمْ وَأَخَوَاتُكُم مِّنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ وَأُمَّهَاتُ نِسَائِكُمْ وَرَبَائِبُكُمُ اللَّاتِی فِی حُجُورِكُم مِّن نِّسَائِكُمُ اللَّاتِی دَخَلْتُم بِهِنَّ فَإِن لَّمْ تَكُونُوا دَخَلْتُم بِهِنَّ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیْكُمْ وَحَلَائِلُ أَبْنَائِكُمُ الَّذِینَ مِنْ أَصْلَابِكُمْ وَأَن تَجْمَعُوا بَیْنَ الْأُخْتَیْنِ إِلَّا مَا قَدْ سَلَفَ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ غَفُورًا رَّحِیمًا
Prohibited to you (For marriage) are:- Your mothers, daughters, sisters; father´s sisters, Mother´s sisters; brother´s daughters, sister´s daughters; foster-mothers (Who gave you suck), foster-sisters; your wives´ mothers; your step-daughters under your guardianship, born of your wives to whom ye have gone in,- no prohibition if ye have not gone in;- (Those who have been) wives of your sons proceeding from your loins; and two sisters in wedlock at one and the same time, except for what is past; for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
الَّذِینَ یَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَائِرَ الْإِثْمِ وَالْفَوَاحِشَ إِلَّا اللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَاسِعُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ الْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِی بُطُونِ أُمَّهَاتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوا أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اتَّقَىٰ
Those who avoid great sins and shameful deeds, only (falling into) small faults,- verily thy Lord is ample in forgiveness. He knows you well when He brings you out of the earth, And when ye are hidden in your mothers´ wombs. Therefore justify not yourselves: He knows best who it is that guards against evil.
2. Foster mother
Quran states
حُرِّمَتْ عَلَیْكُمْ أُمَّهَاتُكُمْ وَبَنَاتُكُمْ وَأَخَوَاتُكُمْ وَعَمَّاتُكُمْ وَخَالَاتُكُمْ وَبَنَاتُ الْأَخِ وَبَنَاتُ الْأُخْتِ وَأُمَّهَاتُكُمُ اللَّاتِی أَرْضَعْنَكُمْ وَأَخَوَاتُكُم مِّنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ وَأُمَّهَاتُ نِسَائِكُمْ وَرَبَائِبُكُمُ اللَّاتِی فِی حُجُورِكُم مِّن نِّسَائِكُمُ اللَّاتِی دَخَلْتُم بِهِنَّ فَإِن لَّمْ تَكُونُوا دَخَلْتُم بِهِنَّ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیْكُمْ وَحَلَائِلُ أَبْنَائِكُمُ الَّذِینَ مِنْ أَصْلَابِكُمْ وَأَن تَجْمَعُوا بَیْنَ الْأُخْتَیْنِ إِلَّا مَا قَدْ سَلَفَ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ غَفُورًا رَّحِیمًا

3. The wives of the prophet
Quran states
النَّبِیُّ أَوْلَىٰ بِالْمُؤْمِنِینَ مِنْ أَنفُسِهِمْ ۖ وَأَزْوَاجُهُ أُمَّهَاتُهُمْ ۗ وَأُولُو الْأَرْحَامِ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلَىٰ بِبَعْضٍ فِی كِتَابِ اللَّهِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ وَالْمُهَاجِرِینَ إِلَّا أَن تَفْعَلُوا إِلَىٰ أَوْلِیَائِكُم مَّعْرُوفًا ۚ كَانَ ذَٰلِكَ فِی الْكِتَابِ مَسْطُورًا
The Prophet is closer to the Believers than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers. Blood-relations among each other have closer personal ties, in the Decree of Allah. Than (the Brotherhood of) Believers and Muhajirs: nevertheless do ye what is just to your closest friends: such is the writing in the Decree (of Allah).
4. Position
Exalted God states
وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِینُهُ
But he whose balance (of good deeds) will be (found) light.
فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِیَةٌ
. Will have his home in a (bottomless) Pit
5. Divine verses
Quran states
هُوَ الَّذِی أَنزَلَ عَلَیْكَ الْكِتَابَ مِنْهُ آیَاتٌ مُّحْكَمَاتٌ هُنَّ أُمُّ الْكِتَابِ وَأُخَرُ مُتَشَابِهَاتٌ ۖ فَأَمَّا الَّذِینَ فِی قُلُوبِهِمْ زَیْغٌ فَیَتَّبِعُونَ مَا تَشَابَهَ مِنْهُ ابْتِغَاءَ الْفِتْنَةِ وَابْتِغَاءَ تَأْوِیلِهِ ۗ وَمَا یَعْلَمُ تَأْوِیلَهُ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ۗ وَالرَّاسِخُونَ فِی الْعِلْمِ یَقُولُونَ آمَنَّا بِهِ كُلٌّ مِّنْ عِندِ رَبِّنَا ۗ وَمَا یَذَّكَّرُ إِلَّا أُولُو الْأَلْبَابِ
He it is Who has sent down to thee the Book: In it are verses basic or fundamental (of established meaning); they are the foundation of the Book: others are allegorical. But those in whose hearts is perversity follow the part thereof that is allegorical, seeking discord, and searching for its hidden meanings, but no one knows its hidden meanings except Allah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in the Book; the whole of it is from our Lord:" and none will grasp the Message except men of understanding.
الرَّحْمَٰنُ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ اسْتَوَىٰ
(Allah) Most Gracious is firmly established on the throne (of authority).
وَالَّذِی نَزَّلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً بِقَدَرٍ فَأَنشَرْنَا بِهِ بَلْدَةً مَّیْتًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ تُخْرَجُونَ
That sends down (from time to time) rain from the sky in due measure;- and We raise to life therewith a land that is dead; even so will ye be raised (from the dead).
إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ
Looking towards their Lord.
لَّا تُدْرِكُهُ الْأَبْصَارُ وَهُوَ یُدْرِكُ الْأَبْصَارَ ۖ وَهُوَ اللَّطِیفُ الْخَبِیرُ
No vision can grasp Him, but His grasp is over all vision: He is above all comprehension, yet is acquainted with all things.
وَإِذَا فَعَلُوا فَاحِشَةً قَالُوا وَجَدْنَا عَلَیْهَا آبَاءَنَا وَاللَّهُ أَمَرَنَا بِهَا ۗ قُلْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا یَأْمُرُ بِالْفَحْشَاءِ ۖ أَتَقُولُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
When they do aught that is shameful, they say: "We found our fathers doing so"; and "Allah commanded us thus": Say: "Nay, Allah never commands what is shameful: do ye say of Allah what ye know not?
وَإِذَا أَرَدْنَا أَن نُّهْلِكَ قَرْیَةً أَمَرْنَا مُتْرَفِیهَا فَفَسَقُوا فِیهَا فَحَقَّ عَلَیْهَا الْقَوْلُ فَدَمَّرْنَاهَا تَدْمِیرًا
When We decide to destroy a population, We (first) send a definite order to those among them who are given the good things of this life and yet transgress; so that the word is proved true against them: then (it is) We destroy them utterly.
6. Decrees
Exalted God states
إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِیًّا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
We have made it a Qur´an in Arabic, that ye may be able to understand (and learn wisdom).
وَإِنَّهُ فِی أُمِّ الْكِتَابِ لَدَیْنَا لَعَلِیٌّ حَكِیمٌ
And verily, it is in the Mother of the Book, in Our Presence, high (in dignity), full of wisdom.
بَلْ هُوَ قُرْآنٌ مَّجِیدٌ
.Day, this is a Glorious Qur´an,
فِی لَوْحٍ مَّحْفُوظٍ
(Inscribed) in a Tablet Preserved.
7. Mecca
Exalted God states
وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَوْحَیْنَا إِلَیْكَ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِیًّا لِّتُنذِرَ أُمَّ الْقُرَىٰ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهَا وَتُنذِرَ یَوْمَ الْجَمْعِ لَا رَیْبَ فِیهِ ۚ فَرِیقٌ فِی الْجَنَّةِ وَفَرِیقٌ فِی السَّعِیرِ
Thus have We sent by inspiration to thee an Arabic Qur´an: that thou mayest warn the Mother of Cities and all around her,- and warn (them) of the Day of Assembly, of which there is no doubt: (when) some will be in the Garden, and some in the Blazing Fire.
وَهَٰذَا كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ مُبَارَكٌ مُّصَدِّقُ الَّذِی بَیْنَ یَدَیْهِ وَلِتُنذِرَ أُمَّ الْقُرَىٰ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهَا ۚ وَالَّذِینَ یُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْآخِرَةِ یُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ ۖ وَهُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ یُحَافِظُونَ
And this is a Book which We have sent down, bringing blessings, and confirming (the revelations) which came before it: that thou mayest warn the mother of cities and all around her. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in this (Book), and they are constant in guarding their prayers.
وَمَا قَدَرُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ قَدْرِهِ إِذْ قَالُوا مَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ بَشَرٍ مِّن شَیْءٍ ۗ قُلْ مَنْ أَنزَلَ الْكِتَابَ الَّذِی جَاءَ بِهِ مُوسَىٰ نُورًا وَهُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ ۖ تَجْعَلُونَهُ قَرَاطِیسَ تُبْدُونَهَا وَتُخْفُونَ كَثِیرًا ۖ وَعُلِّمْتُم مَّا لَمْ تَعْلَمُوا أَنتُمْ وَلَا آبَاؤُكُمْ ۖ قُلِ اللَّهُ ۖ ثُمَّ ذَرْهُمْ فِی خَوْضِهِمْ یَلْعَبُونَ
No just estimate of Allah do they make when they say: "Nothing doth Allah send down to man (by way of revelation)" Say: "Who then sent down the Book which Moses brought?- a light and guidance to man: But ye make it into (separate) sheets for show, while ye conceal much (of its contents): therein were ye taught that which ye knew not- neither ye nor your fathers." Say: "Allah (sent it down)": Then leave them to plunge in vain discourse and trifling.
وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ افْتَرَىٰ عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا أَوْ قَالَ أُوحِیَ إِلَیَّ وَلَمْ یُوحَ إِلَیْهِ شَیْءٌ وَمَن قَالَ سَأُنزِلُ مِثْلَ مَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ ۗ وَلَوْ تَرَىٰ إِذِ الظَّالِمُونَ فِی غَمَرَاتِ الْمَوْتِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ بَاسِطُو أَیْدِیهِمْ أَخْرِجُوا أَنفُسَكُمُ ۖ الْیَوْمَ تُجْزَوْنَ عَذَابَ الْهُونِ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَقُولُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ غَیْرَ الْحَقِّ وَكُنتُمْ عَنْ آیَاتِهِ تَسْتَكْبِرُونَ
Who can be more wicked than one who inventeth a lie against Allah, or saith, "I have received inspiration," when he hath received none, or (again) who saith, "I can reveal the like of what Allah hath revealed"? If thou couldst but see how the wicked (do fare) in the flood of confusion at death! - the angels stretch forth their hands, (saying),"Yield up your souls: this day shall ye receive your reward,- a penalty of shame, for that ye used to tell lies against Allah, and scornfully to reject of His signs.
وَلَقَدْ جِئْتُمُونَا فُرَادَىٰ كَمَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ وَتَرَكْتُم مَّا خَوَّلْنَاكُمْ وَرَاءَ ظُهُورِكُمْ ۖ وَمَا نَرَىٰ مَعَكُمْ شُفَعَاءَكُمُ الَّذِینَ زَعَمْتُمْ أَنَّهُمْ فِیكُمْ شُرَكَاءُ ۚ لَقَد تَّقَطَّعَ بَیْنَكُمْ وَضَلَّ عَنكُم مَّا كُنتُمْ تَزْعُمُونَ
And behold! ye come to us bare and alone as We created you for the first time: ye have left behind you all (the favours) which We bestowed on you: We see not with you your intercessors whom ye thought to be partners in your affairs: so now all relations between you have been cut off, and your (pet) fancies have left you in the lurch.
وَهُوَ الَّذِی أَنزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَخْرَجْنَا بِهِ نَبَاتَ كُلِّ شَیْءٍ فَأَخْرَجْنَا مِنْهُ خَضِرًا نُّخْرِجُ مِنْهُ حَبًّا مُّتَرَاكِبًا وَمِنَ النَّخْلِ مِن طَلْعِهَا قِنْوَانٌ دَانِیَةٌ وَجَنَّاتٍ مِّنْ أَعْنَابٍ وَالزَّیْتُونَ وَالرُّمَّانَ مُشْتَبِهًا وَغَیْرَ مُتَشَابِهٍ ۗ انظُرُوا إِلَىٰ ثَمَرِهِ إِذَا أَثْمَرَ وَیَنْعِهِ ۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَٰلِكُمْ لَآیَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ یُؤْمِنُونَ
It is He Who sendeth down rain from the skies: with it We produce vegetation of all kinds: from some We produce green (crops), out of which We produce grain, heaped up (at harvest); out of the date-palm and its sheaths (or spathes) (come) clusters of dates hanging low and near: and (then there are) gardens of grapes, and olives, and pomegranates, each similar (in kind) yet different (in variety): when they begin to bear fruit, feast your eyes with the fruit and the ripeness thereof. Behold! in these things there are signs for people who believe.
وَیَوْمَ یَحْشُرُهُمْ جَمِیعًا یَا مَعْشَرَ الْجِنِّ قَدِ اسْتَكْثَرْتُم مِّنَ الْإِنسِ ۖ وَقَالَ أَوْلِیَاؤُهُم مِّنَ الْإِنسِ رَبَّنَا اسْتَمْتَعَ بَعْضُنَا بِبَعْضٍ وَبَلَغْنَا أَجَلَنَا الَّذِی أَجَّلْتَ لَنَا ۚ قَالَ النَّارُ مَثْوَاكُمْ خَالِدِینَ فِیهَا إِلَّا مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ ۗ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ حَكِیمٌ عَلِیمٌ
One day will He gather them all together, (and say): "O ye assembly of Jinns! Much (toll) did ye take of men." Their friends amongst men will say: "Our Lord! we made profit from each other: but (alas!) we reached our term - which thou didst appoint for us." He will say: "The Fire be your dwelling-place: you will dwell therein forever, except as Allah willeth." for thy Lord is full of wisdom and knowledge.
قُلْ یَا قَوْمِ اعْمَلُوا عَلَىٰ مَكَانَتِكُمْ إِنِّی عَامِلٌ ۖ فَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ مَن تَكُونُ لَهُ عَاقِبَةُ الدَّارِ ۗ إِنَّهُ لَا یُفْلِحُ الظَّالِمُونَ
Say: "O my people! Do whatever ye can: I will do (my part): soon will ye know who it is whose end will be (best) in the Hereafter: certain it is that the wrong-doers will not prosper.
