Every tribes of Afghanistan have their own clothing and partly try to wear that, and to spread the culture. It’s believed that Pashtuns to be more proactive in this, so that wherever they are, wear the national dress. However, other ethnic groups are not so fanatical and when placed in a new environment dress like the people of that region.

Pashtun’s clothing:

Pashtun men wear Perahan- u- tunban, Chipley, limp, and blanket, and the women wear dress, loose trousers, Pyzar and chador.

Hazara clothing:

Hazara men wear kolāh and a heavy woolen cloth called barrak, and the women wear perahan – u – tunbans and chador. This rule is applicable only in the border areas. As soon as getting out of the region, they change their clothing and, any of the northern Hazara people even don’t know anything about barrak. Except the few Pashtuns who live in large cities, the people have preserved their clothing and are proud of it.

Uzbek-Turkmen clothing:

These people’s clothing includes perahan – u – tunban, pants, chapan qatmeh and moozeh mesi. However, today young people do not wear mesi. Northern regions have been affected by the Uzbek people dress and wear chapan, jilak and gubche. All northern women wear chadur and this rule is common. Turkmen women have special clothes.

Heart people’s clothing:

The people of Herat wearing include perahan- u – tunban, Ascoat and Longi. Tunban is a loose and frizzy pant. Women and girls in all parts of Afghanistan wear floral clothes, but men like simple ones. Only occasionally kids desire bright colored clothing that it is so rare.

People in urban areas’ clothing:

Urban people choose their clothing according to social status. In Kabul, the capital of the country, there are more European clothes. Men wear kurti and patlun, and women’s choice is skirt. Some women also wear patlun, that this form is more common among educated women. Suits of all government officials in all towns and even villages are darishi (kurti and patlun), but people who are self-employed, even in cities, use their own local clothing. Clothing culture of Afghanistan's provinces and regions varies and people of each provience according to their traditional clothes with varies design get dressed, which is sometimes completely different from region by region. But recently, this culture has been invaded from neighboring countries and other countries. One of the provinces in which the costumes are designed in a specific way, is Paktia. Clothing culture in the city is varies from the other provinces. In the past, women’s clothing was made of 10-15 meters of textile for dress, 5-8 meters of textile for Tunban (breeches) and about 5 meters for chadur. Long (a kind of plant which is called mikhak in Farsi language), bead, and golden yarns were used to adorn clothes; the waist of dresses were frizzy. But recently there have been a lot of changes so that adult women wear crimping waist dress made of about three meters of textile and young girls wear bias skirt and gaj chadur. Male population also wears crimping waist dresses, gibbi tunban, coats decorated with mirrors and brocade hats to tie up the turban. In some provinces the traditional clothes are different depending on the conditions and social changes. One of these provinces is Nuristan province. The people of this region don’t use pre-Islam clothes since the rule of Amir Abdul Rahman Khan. After the people of the province being Muslim, their clothe culture changed, so that females’ dress get longer than the former and they use tunban. They also wear crimping waist dress made of about six meters of textile and chadors of about two meters, and men use clothes such as perahan – u – tunban, hand embroidered chapans and pakol hats. The people of the north of the country also have unique characteristics; they choose diffrenet clothes according to the weather changes at different seasons of the year. Most women in Badakhshan wear crimping waist dresses, bias skirts and gibbi tunbans (the trouser leg is crimping and the folds continue upwards), floral cotton textiles and cotton chadors. Male population of this region wear perahan – u – tunban, Longi, hand embroidered hats, qaqmah (a kind of jilak which is made of woolen textile with a special design), chapan and/or jilak – now the president also wears it.
