The uses of the word '' friendship'' in Quran
1. Considering a guardian for following
Quran states
یَا أَیُّهَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا الْیَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَىٰ أَوْلِیَاءَ ۘ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِیَاءُ بَعْضٍ ۚ وَمَن یَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا یَهْدِی الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِینَ
O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: They are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah guideth not a people unjust.
وَمَن یَتَوَلَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَالَّذِینَ آمَنُوا فَإِنَّ حِزْبَ اللَّهِ هُمُ الْغَالِبُونَ
As to those who turn (for friendship) to Allah, His Messenger, and the (fellowship of) believers,- it is the fellowship of Allah that must certainly triumph.
فَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ یَا قَوْمِ لَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ رِسَالَةَ رَبِّی وَنَصَحْتُ لَكُمْ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُحِبُّونَ النَّاصِحِینَ
So Salih left them, saying: "O my people! I did indeed convey to you the message for which I was sent by my Lord: I gave you good counsel, but ye love not good counsellors.
وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن یُجَادِلُ فِی اللَّهِ بِغَیْرِ عِلْمٍ وَیَتَّبِعُ كُلَّ شَیْطَانٍ مَّرِیدٍ
And yet among men there are such as dispute about Allah, without knowledge, and follow every evil one obstinate in rebellion.
كُتِبَ عَلَیْهِ أَنَّهُ مَن تَوَلَّاهُ فَأَنَّهُ یُضِلُّهُ وَیَهْدِیهِ إِلَىٰ عَذَابِ السَّعِیرِ
About the (Evil One) it is decreed that whoever turns to him for friendship, him will he lead astray, and he will guide him to the Penalty of the Fire.
یَا أَیُّهَا النَّاسُ إِن كُنتُمْ فِی رَیْبٍ مِّنَ الْبَعْثِ فَإِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّن تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ عَلَقَةٍ ثُمَّ مِن مُّضْغَةٍ مُّخَلَّقَةٍ وَغَیْرِ مُخَلَّقَةٍ لِّنُبَیِّنَ لَكُمْ ۚ وَنُقِرُّ فِی الْأَرْحَامِ مَا نَشَاءُ إِلَىٰ أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى ثُمَّ نُخْرِجُكُمْ طِفْلًا ثُمَّ لِتَبْلُغُوا أَشُدَّكُمْ ۖ وَمِنكُم مَّن یُتَوَفَّىٰ وَمِنكُم مَّن یُرَدُّ إِلَىٰ أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ لِكَیْلَا یَعْلَمَ مِن بَعْدِ عِلْمٍ شَیْئًا ۚ وَتَرَى الْأَرْضَ هَامِدَةً فَإِذَا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَیْهَا الْمَاءَ اهْتَزَّتْ وَرَبَتْ وَأَنبَتَتْ مِن كُلِّ زَوْجٍ بَهِیجٍ
O mankind! if ye have a doubt about the Resurrection, (consider) that We created you out of dust, then out of sperm, then out of a leech-like clot, then out of a morsel of flesh, partly formed and partly unformed, in order that We may manifest (our power) to you; and We cause whom We will to rest in the wombs for an appointed term, then do We bring you out as babes, then (foster you) that ye may reach your age of full strength; and some of you are called to die, and some are sent back to the feeblest old age, so that they know nothing after having known (much), and (further), thou seest the earth barren and lifeless, but when We pour down rain on it, it is stirred (to life), it swells, and it puts forth every kind of beautiful growth (in pairs).
إِنَّ عِبَادِی لَیْسَ لَكَ عَلَیْهِمْ سُلْطَانٌ إِلَّا مَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْغَاوِینَ
For over My servants no authority shalt thou have, except such as put themselves in the wrong and follow thee''.
وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ أَجْمَعِینَ
And verily, Hell is the promised abode for them all.
نَّمَا سُلْطَانُهُ عَلَى الَّذِینَ یَتَوَلَّوْنَهُ وَالَّذِینَ هُم بِهِ مُشْرِكُونَ
His authority is over those only, who take him as patron and who join partners with Allah.
2. Friendship with unbelievers and getting help from them
Exalted God states
یَا أَیُّهَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا عَدُوِّی وَعَدُوَّكُمْ أَوْلِیَاءَ تُلْقُونَ إِلَیْهِم بِالْمَوَدَّةِ وَقَدْ كَفَرُوا بِمَا جَاءَكُم مِّنَ الْحَقِّ یُخْرِجُونَ الرَّسُولَ وَإِیَّاكُمْ ۙ أَن تُؤْمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ رَبِّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ خَرَجْتُمْ جِهَادًا فِی سَبِیلِی وَابْتِغَاءَ مَرْضَاتِی ۚ تُسِرُّونَ إِلَیْهِم بِالْمَوَدَّةِ وَأَنَا أَعْلَمُ بِمَا أَخْفَیْتُمْ وَمَا أَعْلَنتُمْ ۚ وَمَن یَفْعَلْهُ مِنكُمْ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ سَوَاءَ السَّبِیلِ
O ye who believe! Take not my enemies and yours as friends (or protectors),- offering them (your) love, even though they have rejected the Truth that has come to you, and have (on the contrary) driven out the Prophet and yourselves (from your homes), (simply) because ye believe in Allah your Lord! If ye have come out to strive in My Way and to seek My Good Pleasure, (take them not as friends), holding secret converse of love (and friendship) with them: for I know full well all that ye conceal and all that ye reveal. And any of you that does this has strayed from the Straight Path.

O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: They are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah guideth not a people unjust.
3. Turning away
Quran states
مَّن یُطِعِ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطَاعَ اللَّهَ ۖ وَمَن تَوَلَّىٰ فَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ عَلَیْهِمْ حَفِیظًا
He who obeys the Messenger, obeys Allah: But if any turn away, We have not sent thee to watch over their (evil deeds).
فَإِن تَوَلَّیْتُمْ فَمَا سَأَلْتُكُم مِّنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَى اللَّهِ ۖ وَأُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِینَ
But if ye turn back, (consider): no reward have I asked of you: my reward is only due from Allah, and I have been commanded to be of those who submit to Allah´s will (in Islam).
فَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ یَا قَوْمِ لَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ رِسَالَةَ رَبِّی وَنَصَحْتُ لَكُمْ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُحِبُّونَ النَّاصِحِینَ
So Salih left them, saying: "O my people! I did indeed convey to you the message for which I was sent by my Lord: I gave you good counsel, but ye love not good counsellors.
فَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ یَا قَوْمِ لَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ رِسَالَاتِ رَبِّی وَنَصَحْتُ لَكُمْ ۖ فَكَیْفَ آسَىٰ عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ كَافِرِینَ
So Shu´aib left them, saying: "O my people! I did indeed convey to you the messages for which I was sent by my Lord: I gave you good counsel, but how shall I lament over a people who refuse to believe.
وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ یَا قَوْمِ إِن كُنتُمْ آمَنتُم بِاللَّهِ فَعَلَیْهِ تَوَكَّلُوا إِن كُنتُم مُّسْلِمِینَ
Moses said: "O my people! If ye do (really) believe in Allah, then in Him put your trust if ye submit (your will to His).
4. Returning
Quran states about persons that would like to do Jihad
وَلَا عَلَى الَّذِینَ إِذَا مَا أَتَوْكَ لِتَحْمِلَهُمْ قُلْتَ لَا أَجِدُ مَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَیْهِ تَوَلَّوا وَّأَعْیُنُهُمْ تَفِیضُ مِنَ الدَّمْعِ حَزَنًا أَلَّا یَجِدُوا مَا یُنفِقُونَ
Nor (is there blame) on those who came to thee to be provided with mounts, and when thou saidst, "I can find no mounts for you," they turned back, their eyes streaming with tears of grief that they had no resources wherewith to provide the expenses''.
فَسَقَىٰ لَهُمَا ثُمَّ تَوَلَّىٰ إِلَى الظِّلِّ فَقَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّی لِمَا أَنزَلْتَ إِلَیَّ مِنْ خَیْرٍ فَقِیرٌ
So he watered (their flocks) for them; then he turned back to the shade, and said:"O my Lord! truly am I in (desperate) need of any good that Thou dost send me.
5. Being in a close distance
Quran states
اذْهَب بِّكِتَابِی هَٰذَا فَأَلْقِهْ إِلَیْهِمْ ثُمَّ تَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ فَانظُرْ مَاذَا یَرْجِعُونَ
Go thou, with this letter of mine, and deliver it to them: then draw back from them, and (wait to) see what answer they return.
6. Taking responsibility
Quran states
إِنَّ الَّذِینَ جَاءُوا بِالْإِفْكِ عُصْبَةٌ مِّنكُمْ ۚ لَا تَحْسَبُوهُ شَرًّا لَّكُم ۖ بَلْ هُوَ خَیْرٌ لَّكُمْ ۚ لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُم مَّا اكْتَسَبَ مِنَ الْإِثْمِ ۚ وَالَّذِی تَوَلَّىٰ كِبْرَهُ مِنْهُمْ لَهُ عَذَابٌ عَظِیمٌ
Those who brought forward the lie are a body among yourselves: think it not to be an evil to you; On the contrary it is good for you: to every man among them (will come the punishment) of the sin that he earned, and to him who took on himself the lead among them, will be a penalty grievous.
وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ یَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَیَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا یُبْدِینَ زِینَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا ۖ وَلْیَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَىٰ جُیُوبِهِنَّ ۖ وَلَا یُبْدِینَ زِینَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَائِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَائِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِی إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِی أَخَوَاتِهِنَّ أَوْ نِسَائِهِنَّ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَیْمَانُهُنَّ أَوِ التَّابِعِینَ غَیْرِ أُولِی الْإِرْبَةِ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ أَوِ الطِّفْلِ الَّذِینَ لَمْ یَظْهَرُوا عَلَىٰ عَوْرَاتِ النِّسَاءِ ۖ وَلَا یَضْرِبْنَ بِأَرْجُلِهِنَّ لِیُعْلَمَ مَا یُخْفِینَ مِن زِینَتِهِنَّ ۚ وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِیعًا أَیُّهَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband´s fathers, their sons, their husbands´ sons, their brothers or their brothers´ sons, or their sisters´ sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss.
وَلْیَسْتَعْفِفِ الَّذِینَ لَا یَجِدُونَ نِكَاحًا حَتَّىٰ یُغْنِیَهُمُ اللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ ۗ وَالَّذِینَ یَبْتَغُونَ الْكِتَابَ مِمَّا مَلَكَتْ أَیْمَانُكُمْ فَكَاتِبُوهُمْ إِنْ عَلِمْتُمْ فِیهِمْ خَیْرًا ۖ وَآتُوهُم مِّن مَّالِ اللَّهِ الَّذِی آتَاكُمْ ۚ وَلَا تُكْرِهُوا فَتَیَاتِكُمْ عَلَى الْبِغَاءِ إِنْ أَرَدْنَ تَحَصُّنًا لِّتَبْتَغُوا عَرَضَ الْحَیَاةِ الدُّنْیَا ۚ وَمَن یُكْرِههُّنَّ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ مِن بَعْدِ إِكْرَاهِهِنَّ غَفُورٌ رَّحِیمٌ
Let those who find not the wherewithal for marriage keep themselves chaste, until Allah gives them means out of His grace. And if any of your slaves ask for a deed in writing (to enable them to earn their freedom for a certain sum), give them such a deed if ye know any good in them: yea, give them something yourselves out of the means which Allah has given to you. But force not your maids to prostitution when they desire chastity, in order that ye may make a gain in the goods of this life. But if anyone compels them, yet, after such compulsion, is Allah, Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful (to them).
یَا أَیُّهَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا لِیَسْتَأْذِنكُمُ الَّذِینَ مَلَكَتْ أَیْمَانُكُمْ وَالَّذِینَ لَمْ یَبْلُغُوا الْحُلُمَ مِنكُمْ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ۚ مِّن قَبْلِ صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ وَحِینَ تَضَعُونَ ثِیَابَكُم مِّنَ الظَّهِیرَةِ وَمِن بَعْدِ صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ ۚ ثَلَاثُ عَوْرَاتٍ لَّكُمْ ۚ لَیْسَ عَلَیْكُمْ وَلَا عَلَیْهِمْ جُنَاحٌ بَعْدَهُنَّ ۚ طَوَّافُونَ عَلَیْكُم بَعْضُكُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ یُبَیِّنُ اللَّهُ لَكُمُ الْآیَاتِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلِیمٌ حَكِیمٌ
O ye who believe! let those whom your right hands possess, and the (children) among you who have not come of age ask your permission (before they come to your presence), on three occasions: before morning prayer; the while ye doff your clothes for the noonday heat; and after the late-night prayer: these are your three times of undress: outside those times it is not wrong for you or for them to move about attending to each other: Thus does Allah make clear the Signs to you: for Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom.
لَّیْسَ عَلَى الْأَعْمَىٰ حَرَجٌ وَلَا عَلَى الْأَعْرَجِ حَرَجٌ وَلَا عَلَى الْمَرِیضِ حَرَجٌ وَلَا عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَن تَأْكُلُوا مِن بُیُوتِكُمْ أَوْ بُیُوتِ آبَائِكُمْ أَوْ بُیُوتِ أُمَّهَاتِكُمْ أَوْ بُیُوتِ إِخْوَانِكُمْ أَوْ بُیُوتِ أَخَوَاتِكُمْ أَوْ بُیُوتِ أَعْمَامِكُمْ أَوْ بُیُوتِ عَمَّاتِكُمْ أَوْ بُیُوتِ أَخْوَالِكُمْ أَوْ بُیُوتِ خَالَاتِكُمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكْتُم مَّفَاتِحَهُ أَوْ صَدِیقِكُمْ ۚ لَیْسَ عَلَیْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَن تَأْكُلُوا جَمِیعًا أَوْ أَشْتَاتًا ۚ فَإِذَا دَخَلْتُم بُیُوتًا فَسَلِّمُوا عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِكُمْ تَحِیَّةً مِّنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ مُبَارَكَةً طَیِّبَةً ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ یُبَیِّنُ اللَّهُ لَكُمُ الْآیَاتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
It is no fault in the blind nor in one born lame, nor in one afflicted with illness, nor in yourselves, that ye should eat in your own houses, or those of your fathers, or your mothers, or your brothers, or your sisters, or your father´s brothers or your father´s sisters, or your mohter´s brothers, or your mother´s sisters, or in houses of which the keys are in your possession, or in the house of a sincere friend of yours: there is no blame on you, whether ye eat in company or separately. But if ye enter houses, salute each other - a greeting of blessing and purity as from Allah. Thus does Allah make clear the signs to you: that ye may understand?
