In the history books Hegmataneh have always introduced as the capital of Median, but in the latest stratigraphy of the ancient hill, it was proved that the town of Hegmataneh have been used in the Parthian period and most likely it was made in that era or a time near that era.
Hegmataneh hill is in the north of Hamedan. Hegmataneh is the ancient name of Hamedan. This ancient city was made with the length of 550 m and the width of 350 m with an organized plan.
Hegmataneh, which was called Ekbatan by the Greek means a gathering place. In the Greek books, this city was mentioned as the capital of Median, Achaemenid, Seleucid, Parthian and Sassanian. However, many uncertainties exist about the history of this ancient city. These findings indicate that Hegmataneh was used in the Parthian period.
These findings include a number of domestic pottery belonged to the Parthian era and bronze coins of this period of history.
Architectural structures in Hegmataneh are very likely built during the Parthian or Seleucid period.
A thick layer of dust was seen under the ancient architectural structures in the city.
In different periods, Hegmataneh was used repeatedly with construction on the main walls. Parthian layer is in the beneath the hill at the Sassanian era and no layer was seen on it until the last one. The identified subsequent layers in the hills belong to the Qajar and Pahlavi era. The stratigraphy of the 100 m area of Hegmataneh hill did not lead to any sign of pre-Parthian period. But, the final conclusion of its historical period is possible development and stratigraphy studies in other parts of the hill. Although, there are many uncertainties about the exact time of the construction of Hegmataneh, but most archaeologists introduced Hegmataneh as one of the capitals of the kings of the Medes. The Hegmataneh city which is mentioned in the Greek and Persian books as the capital of the Medes may be one of the other ancient hills surrounding the city of Hamadan. None of these hills has been under excavation.
