Chehel Sotoon (mansion) was built within the garden, buildings and palaces of Doltkhaneh Safavi (Government House) in the early 11th century AH. It was mainly constructed to formally receive foreign guests and ambassadors. It was built in three stages based on a single plan. The first stage includes the main large hall. The second, Ivane Ayeneh (mirror porch)and side rooms. The third, the pillar porch including 18 pillars and wood ceilings. Chehel (or 40) indicates 20pillars reflected on the water of its pool.
The walls were painted in a Persian miniature style with the supervision of a renowned artist, Reza Abbasi who lived in the Safavid era.
Four large paintings inside the hall display scenes of the battlefield and reception sessions of the Safavid kings. There are two large paintings by Sadeghe Naghash( an artist in Qajar period) . Unfortunately, many paintings of the Safavid Era were destroyed when Zello Sultan was the king. The beautiful lyrics of Najib Kashani with the calligraphy of Mohammad Saleh Isfahani written on the forehead of pillared porch show that this exceptional building was on fire in the early 12th century AH and was repaired in Shah Sultan Hossein Safavi time.
