Imagine going through a hot and dry desert, you come across a canyon all of a sudden ,known as Bolbol (nightingale). And right in the middle of a flat low-lying soiled land you run into a canyon named (Borj) tower.
This sweet contradiction could only be found in Iran’s Lut Desert where two alluvial canyons have made a scenic landscape.
Broad fields void of vegetations and piles of sand and grit might strengthen this mindset that the uneven expansive land has nothing to offer but the existence of roughness of land surface and various natural phenomena spread all over the place are testaments to its uniqueness.
The canyons are unique phenomena taking place in the Central Lut desert. They have been named by experts based on their shapes and geomorphological features. 7 km from each other, they sit in the east and west of Rud Shur and the distance between is covered in heaps of sand resembling whale’s back, scattered Kaluts ( the geographical and natural phenomenon which takes place as a result of erosion following wind and rain), and clay expanse.

From ice age to age of technology

Borj canyon is a natural masterpiece in Lut desert. Initial examinations showed that it dates from between the first ice age and second geologic periods when Kaluts were formed. It is in fact an alluvial ravine which facilitates the flow of water from the west of central Lut towars deep conical slopes in the east.
Although it’s emerged after several thousand years of erosion due to rain and wind, sometimes water flows after temporary showers.

The entrance mouth of the canyon is about 8 meters and as the walls on two sides grow higher, it becomes narrow so that it reaches about 1.5 to 2 meters wide. The walls are about 50 meters tall. Isolated high sharp rocks stretch along them resembling pointed towers. They have created fascinating and marvelous shapes that would definitely interest geologists.
The high walls and narrow winding corridors don’t let the sunlight in.

Passing thorough sand corridors

Deposited layers in the walls formed over different periods have caused geologists to better appreciate the oldness of desert. There is still room for more research by dedicated experts in the fields of sedimentology , geomorphology and geography.
The narrow corridors with turns , soaring walls and clay pyramid rocks have made it a suitable habitat for various animal species.
A variety of Coleoptera, buzzard, Qorab, moths, types of spiders, reptile and sand fox are among the animals found in the geomorphologically important desert. Also, It’s a feeding place for hunting birds. The significant ecosystem is a hugely well-deserved nomination to join the national and global natural heritage list as it features geomporhological and ecomorhological structures and exceptional landscapes in a hot and dry climate , and plays a balancing role in Iran’s Plateau. Fars green club, fortunately, is attempting to get it enlisted after paperwork.
