In 1883, a Jewish writer who was called Lylyn Bloom said in an article entitled "The future of our nation," which he had published the following sentences:
Ahead of us, there are not more than three ways:
1. Continue forever to be tolerant of the tyranny and torture imposed upon us, and be satisfied and wander about like the itinerant gypsies and tramps and be killed and perished.
2. We should melt in the heat of the nations among which we live and wash our hands of our Jewish religion and follow them for many years and accept their humiliation. In this case, it should be expected that our children will tear all ties to being Jewish and be melted completely among the foreigners.
3. We should focus all of our efforts on reviving and restoring Israel in our ancestral land so that the future generations can continue to live there.
One of the most important political religious movements that was promoted in the second half of the nineteenth century by the Zionists among Christians in Europe was a trend called "the Christian Zionism".
There is no doubt that the study of historical contexts is considered incomplete without addressing the Christian Zionism and also the political and religious occupation of Palestine.
The idea was used to stress that although the Jews are a cruel and ruthless nation and also deny Jesus Christ, their existence and survival is inevitable and should be considered a religious duty to fulfill the terms of the reappearance of Jesus Christ in order to help them settle in an independent state.
The idea served to explain to Christians the theory and the belief of the Jews living in Palestine and the prospects of the establishment of a Jewish state.
In explaining the Christian beliefs of this movement, the founders of this thought associated and linked the reappearance of Jesus Christ to some preceding subjects, of which, the occurrence of three events was announced by them:
1. The establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine, with the announcement of the establishment of Israel in 1948, the Christian Zionists in the United States considered it as the great evangelistic event in the emergence of Jesus Christ which was evident.
2. The occupation of Jerusalem when the city was occupied by Israel in 1967. The evangelical Zionists believe that Christ will rule the whole world in this city after his re-emergence. Hence, the US government has been under pressure to make this city as the capital of Israel and to recognize the absolute and eternal right to it. The US Senate confirmed and accepted this demand in April 1990.
3. rebuilding the Solomon's Temple; Since the Jews believe this temple was right in the same place where the mosque is later built by the Muslims, they often under the pretext of searching for ancient artifacts, and to explore at the foot of its walls, intended to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque. However, the Israeli government has not dared to do its destructive actions, so far, because of the intense feelings and the strong emotions of the Muslims about the mosque which is their first Kiblah and the base for the elevation of Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him).
Haim Weizmann, the leader of the Zionist movement in the first half of the last century, writes in his book which is called “The trial and error”:
The Great Britain began the founding of the Zionist movement, and it supported its goals and took responsibility for it and agreed to the surrender of Palestine to the discharge of the native residents, and giving the place to the Jews in 1933. Of course, if not for the insurgencies and revolutions of the Palestinian Arabs that were incessant, this would be achieved in the same year.
It may be asked why the UK supported and has ever since given the intensity of prejudice toward the Jews and why the State of Great Britain showed much affection for the realization of the aspirations of the people?
The answer is that the people of England, especially the fundamentalist British people – are influenced and affected by the Torah more than the people of any other nation. The British adherence to the principles of honesty, is what fulfilled our aspirations because the English were faithful to what the Bible, had said about the return of the Jews to Palestine is and the faith, the community and the Protestant Church of England, was one of the greatest sources of assistance to us in this way.
On 28 May 1839, reporting the number and the condition of the Jews in Palestine by William Young who was the first vice consul of the Great Britain in Jerusalem, a letter was transmitted to Palmerstone.
According to the report, at that time, about 9690 Jews lived in Palestine in an unfavorable situation and managed to make their livelihood by foreign aids.
This report also added a note that was written in the same year by the British Navy Secretary Henry Innes and the note was also sent to Palmerstone and made him more determined in following his plans.
In his note, Ines had asked the northern European countries and the United States of America to be inspired by Cyrus the Great, the great king of Persia and in order to carry out the will and providence of God make attempts in the return of the Jews to Palestine where their efforts should apply.
With this note and the report given to Queen Victoria, Palmerstone managed to attract her attention and this prompted her to support and verify the Jews.
Then, by the token of Palmerstone, the British newspapers and the British press issued and expressed articles and discussions on this matter for over a year and with the creation of the appropriate intellectual fields in society, they prepared and shifted the public opinion in favor of the Jews and deploying them in an independent country.
On the other hand, Palmerstone also tried to make preparations to cause this notion to be accepted among the members of parliament, political parties and political figures and the influential characters.
However, the interesting thing was that the Jews in Britain and in northern Europe did not show any willingness with respect to this matter as yet at that time, the Zionist thought was not formed among the Jews and, spiritually and intellectually, they did not think that they were ready for this action. The Jews were mostly looking for freedom of religion and political liberty in the countries where they lived. Thus, the British government shifted its attention to the Jews of Eastern Europe and by reminding them of the difficulties and sufferings that they had gone through in Russia and Romania following the assassination of Alexander II, Tsar of Russia in 1881, they tried to persuade them to such an action.
The British government followed several major objectives from the plan for the Jewish immigration to Palestine:
1. Stopping the flood of immigration of Jews from Russia and Eastern Europe to Great Britain.
2. Creating a Jewish minority in Palestine which inevitably leads to the support and presence of the Great Britain in the area.
3. The gathering of Jews in Palestine, to fulfill the promises and ideals of Torah that was considered.
4. Strengthening the economy of Turkey by helping it grow richer in the shadow of the wealth of the country's Jewish immigrants and make the country stand against the greed of the governments of Russia and France and neutralizing the efforts of Muhammad Ali Pasha in taking over Syria.
The Christian Zionist movement had other supporters and advocates among the nineteenth century British political figures.
One of them, Charles Henry Churchill (Charles Henry Churchill), who in 1841 wrote a letter to the chairperson of the London Jewish Forum, said: Only if two factors would go hand in hand, it is possible to accelerate the return of the Jewish people to Palestine. First, the Jews around the world should unanimously take the subject of the return to Palestine very seriously and try to do this, and second, the European powers must show determination in making this come true.
This was the first invitation and the call for the establishment of the Jewish Zionism which was expressed by the Christian Zionism.
Another supporter of this movement was Edward Mitford of the authorities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Great Britain that presented in 1845 a comprehensive plan to establish a Jewish state in Palestine. He had suggested in the plan that to provide the strategic and security interests and also the economic interests of the British, the Jewish state must be first established under the leadership of the country is Great Britain.
In 1860, Laharan published a book entitled the problem of the Jewish East, the Egyptian and Arabic Empire and the restoration of Jewish ethnicity. In this book, he has mentioned the Jews with great and excessive astonishment as to how they have opened their ways in several major and minor ways into the European civilization. He says in this regard:
If saving the Middle Eastern civilization which is in decline is possible by the injection of European civilization, the whole of Europe should necessarily act for the separation of Palestine from the Ottoman Empire and transferring it to the Jews.
Following the whispers and provocations, the first preparatory measures for the Jewish settlement in the area since 1865 with the deployment of the Palestinian groups was concluded by sending the study and investigation groups.
The first reports from the aforementioned groups relied on two things:
1. The decadence and backwardness of the area of Palestine because there are Arab Muslims!
2. The importance of the Jewish immigration to the land to make it grow and develop.
Perhaps the most effective programs which were offered by the expeditions was a plan that Lawrence Oliphant 1829-1888 AD presented in Gilead. He proposed a Jewish settlement in the area of 5/1 million feddans in Eastern Jordan, to settle the Jews from Russia and Romania. He stressed that the Arab residents of the area should be like the native Indians of America gathered and settled in other regions.
With this being said, it was necessary that a bridge between the Christian Zionists and Jewish Zionists be created for financial investments and the necessary cooperation. Therefore, Disraeli, the Prime Minister of the Great Britain and his secretary (Salez Buri) wanted Oliphant to negotiate with the Sultan and gain his consent to facilitate the immigration and settlement of the Jews in Palestine.
At the time we are referring to here, which means the second half of the nineteenth century, the Jews began to appear as a set of relatively powerful and influential people and figures in the field of economics and (more or less) policy in the entire Europe and were indirectly influential in many events and phenomena that occurred during the time.
Disraeli, the Jewish and famous British prime minister at the time, with an ironic sense of the word, said about the power and influence of his religious brothers:
Politics and governance of the world are in the hands of the people of whom the ordinary people are unaware of and think quite differently of it.
The scope of the activities of the Christian Zionism was not limited to European countries, but the radius of activity in the nineteenth century was extended to the United States of America as well and took extensive measures. Including:
1. Encouraging the Jews to accept the invitation of the heads of the Zionism to immigrate to Palestine.
2. Putting pressure on the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid, to accept the Jewish settlement in Palestine. This important affair was substantially pursued by Lew Wallace, the United States ambassador to Istanbul and Edwin Wallace who was the United States consul in Jerusalem and the author of the “Holy Jerusalem”.
Disraeli, the Jewish and famous British prime minister at the time, with an ironic sense of power and influence it has learned his fellow:
3-The establishment of the national and religious organizations and institutes in order to financially and spiritually support the Torah promises concerning the settlement of the Jews in Palestine.
Of the organizations that were created in this connection, one of them was the American association or the support of Palestine which was established in 1931 by an American priest named Charles Russell. Another organization was the American-Palestinian committee which was founded in 1932 by Senator Robert Wagner and consisted of 68 of the senators and 200 people from the American Congress.
Also, in 1942, a series of organizations called the Christian Council of Palestine were created by Protestant priests and significant economic, governmental and political figures for the realization of the contents of the Belfour promise.
This organization cited the slogan “The Promised Land” and the “Chosen Nation” and also encouraged the notion that the best thing that a committed Christian can do with regard to his or her religion is giving spiritual and financial aids and support for the realization of God’s word respecting the return of the Jews to Palestine which paves the way for the reappearance of Jesus Christ.
On the other hand, at the same time which was marked by the immigration of the Russian Jews to the United States through Europe and this caused the Americans to be concerned and worried, a letter posted by the American Bishop, who was the most famous American advocate of the Zionist movement at the time, indoctrinated this question among the Americans as why they should not divert the course of the Jewish immigration to Palestine?!
The letter written by Harrison that was full of opposition and was addressed to the Russian government concerning the violent acts of the Russians against the Jews was perhaps the first of its kind.
The Americans asked: If it is not possible to solve the problems of the Jews in that country and if the US has no appetite for accepting these immigrants, why shouldn’t we take them to Palestine and make them settle there?
As can be seen, in the nineteenth century, a widespread and systematic movement over a large area of Europe was created, especially in the Great Britain and in the United States in the interest of the Jews to establish unity among their organizations and create the possibility of having a subjective belief and, finally, the displacement and the establishment of their independent homeland in Palestine. These movements over time gradually became more serious and better and more compact.
In the same century, many independent or affiliated associations and organizations were composed and performed the activities of Zionist organizations to achieve the Zionist goals, including the following:
- Union of Jewish English.
- English and foreign associations for the return of the Jewish state in Palestine.
- The union for encouraging the Jews to be settle in Palestine.
- The union for encouraging the Jewish community in the Holy Land for agricultural activities.
Additionally, an organization called the "Jewish Chronicle" was established as an effective tool for promoting the notion of Jewish "accommodation in the Palestine" in the Jewish community.
In 1861, "Hebrew Society of London for development of the Holy Land" played an active part in cooperation with the association "Lovers of Zion", which established several settlements in Palestine.
During the same years, Jewish groups repeated the slogan that emphasized:
"Continuing the good life of the Jews out of Palestine in any society is not possible."
