It is near Sheikh Alikhan village, 25 km from Chelgard – the central district of Koohrang in Chaharmahal Bakhtiari province. It is opposite the Chema field and resembles a large strait with piles of snow 50 meters high. In warm seasons with low rain, thin ice layers of the cave are too fragile to walk on. This rarest and most breathtaking cave lies within a deep valley and its layers of snow, formed over years, have turned into enormous icicles and masses which remain there throughout the year.
Furthermore, it is the largest source of fresh water in Iran as there is a cold spring flowing below the ice which ends up in Koohrang Dam. Its name, Chema or Chima, was taken from the Bakhtiari nomads’ dialect.
The cave was made gradually over 100,000 years after it had snowed on a rocky narrow strip of land, then melted due to the sun's angle and eroded the area below the snow. Despite all its beauty and wonder, it is unfortunately unknown to many tourists and visitors.
However, it’s become a recreational site for the teenagers among the nomads and a ski resort for competitors in the country.
