The cave of Hampoil, 150 to 200 million years old, is located in the mountainous region offering a splendid landscape. It is situated 8 km southeast of the city of Maragheh nearby the village of Goshayeh. In the entrance of the cave there is a large square whose ceiling houses the nests of the pigeons.
After a low-height tunnel on the right, there is another massive square where 4 wells exist, with an approximate depth of 10 to 12 m, which all end up in a large underground square.
On this square you can view huge rocks and as a result of underground water their surface is slippery until Khordad, the third month of the Iranian year. The square leads to large rooms and eventually reaches narrow tunnels. Hundreds of bats hang down the ceilings of the rooms. Since there are so many pigeons inside the cave, it is known as pigeon's cave.
