The observatory was built under the supervision of Khaje Nasir Tusi in the city of Maragheh. It is housed on top of a hill west of the city and today only the foundations of its different parts as well as its stone Sodos, an old instrument used for measuring the height of stars and planets before the invention of telescope, remain. In the last couple of years a dome was built on the top of it to protect the remains of the building.
Parviz Varjavand and his co-workers researched there in the 1350 th and explored its different parts. The main building was in the form of a cylinder tower and on its side buildings there were a library as well as a place for accommodation of the workers.
