The castle is located in East Azerbaijan province, Ajabshir city, Ghale Chai district, Koohestan rural district, and in the east of Barazlu village.
Often being confused with Zahhak Castle in Hashtrud, the building dates from the Orartui period, the Parthians, Sassanid and medieval Islam eras.
It' s not clear what it is called but it seems like the historic building's name is taken from Zahhak Castle in Hashtrud. The scattered pottery pieces along with its infrastructure goes back to Orartui period as well as the Parthians, Sassanid, and medieval Islam eras.
The castle in Ajabshir measures 700 m long, 300 m wide, and 80 m high. It contains 3 walls in the center, inside and outside. It has a couple of water cisterns with channels dog like pipes. The materials used mostly include rubble stones, bricks, and lime mortar.
In the southeast of the building, there exist the remains of an adobe wall from Orartui and at the end of it on the northwest a building resembling a tiny tower structure is seen whose architecture goes back to the Islamic period.
Numbered 22544, it was enlisted on the national list by the culture and tourism heritage organization in 1386.
