The word '' torturing'' in Quran

Ragheb says '' if a person gives up eating and sleeping, he or she will be tortured''. Then he says '' it is feeling of pain and suffering ''. Quran states about torturing
وَحِیلَ بَیْنَهُمْ وَبَیْنَ مَا یَشْتَهُونَ كَمَا فُعِلَ بِأَشْیَاعِهِم مِّن قَبْلُ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا فِی شَكٍّ مُّرِیبٍ
And between them and their desires, is placed a barrier, as was done in the past with their partisans: for they were indeed in suspicious (disquieting) doubt.
When persons are deprived of pleasures in the world or soul is deprived of whatever enjoys, they will be tortured. Torturing in the afterlife cannot be described and is not compared to kinds of torturing in the world.
A lot of verses have referred to two kinds of torturing in the world and the afterlife;
وَلَنُذِیقَنَّهُم مِّنَ الْعَذَابِ الْأَدْنَىٰ دُونَ الْعَذَابِ الْأَكْبَرِ لَعَلَّهُمْ یَرْجِعُونَ
And indeed We will make them taste of the Penalty of this (life) prior to the supreme Penalty, in order that they may (repent and) return.
Mojahed says that purpose from torturing in the above verse is torture under the grave.
Quran states about torturing
وَإِذَا وَقَعَ الْقَوْلُ عَلَیْهِمْ أَخْرَجْنَا لَهُمْ دَابَّةً مِّنَ الْأَرْضِ تُكَلِّمُهُمْ أَنَّ النَّاسَ كَانُوا بِآیَاتِنَا لَا یُوقِنُونَ
And when the Word is fulfilled against them (the unjust), we shall produce from the earth a beast to (face) them: He will speak to them, for that mankind did not believe with assurance in Our Signs.
مِن قَبْلُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ وَأَنزَلَ الْفُرْقَانَ ۗ إِنَّ الَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا بِآیَاتِ اللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ شَدِیدٌ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَزِیزٌ ذُو انتِقَامٍ
Then those who reject Faith in the Signs of Allah will suffer the severest penalty, and Allah is Exalted in Might, Lord of Retribution.
In the above verse, torture of unbelievers is not in the doomsday, but it is in both the world and the afterlife.
Allame Tabatabaei says '' Quran considers a person that has forgotten his creator is bitter in spite of the fact that we think that it is great''.
Quran states
وَمَنْ أَعْرَضَ عَن ذِكْرِی فَإِنَّ لَهُ مَعِیشَةً ضَنكًا وَنَحْشُرُهُ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَةِ أَعْمَىٰ
But whosoever turns away from My Message, verily for him is a life narrowed down, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Judgment.
وَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَالُهُمْ وَأَوْلَادُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّمَا یُرِیدُ اللَّهُ أَن یُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِی الدُّنْیَا وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَافِرُونَ
Nor let their wealth nor their (following in) sons dazzle thee: Allah´s plan is to punish them with these things in this world, and that their souls may perish in their (very) denial of Allah.
Some persons that have weak faith in God believe that happiness of the life is in wealth and children and happiness of the afterlife is heaven. Others believe that happiness of their life is only on the earth and they try to achieve pleasures of their life in wealth, children and wives.
Whatever is enjoyment of body and torturing of soul is same unhappiness and torturing of human. Quran states
ا یَغُرَّنَّكَ تَقَلُّبُ الَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا فِی الْبِلَادِ
.Let not the strutting about of the Unbelievers through the land deceive thee
مَتَاعٌ قَلِیلٌ ثُمَّ مَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ ۚ وَبِئْسَ الْمِهَادُ
Little is it for enjoyment: Their ultimate abode is Hell: what an evil bed (To lie on).
Quran considers pain soul and body as torturing;
أَلَمْ تَرَ كَیْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ
.( Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the ´Ad (people
إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ
Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars.
الَّتِی لَمْ یُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِی الْبِلَادِ
? The like of which were not produced in (all) the land
وَثَمُودَ الَّذِینَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ
And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?
وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِی الْأَوْتَادِ
And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes?
الَّذِینَ طَغَوْا فِی الْبِلَادِ
All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands. )
فَأَكْثَرُوا فِیهَا الْفَسَادَ
.(And heaped therein mischief (on mischief
فَصَبَّ عَلَیْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ
.Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ
For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower.
Quran considers some sufferings as test;
وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُم بِشَیْءٍ مِّنَ الْخَوْفِ وَالْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَنفُسِ وَالثَّمَرَاتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الصَّابِرِینَ
Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere.
وَاذْكُرْ عَبْدَنَا أَیُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ أَنِّی مَسَّنِیَ الشَّیْطَانُ بِنُصْبٍ وَعَذَابٍ
Commemorate Our Servant Job. Behold he cried to his Lord: "The Evil One has afflicted me with distress and suffering''.
In the above verse, this kind of torturing leads to perpetual blessings and happiness that are against blessings and pleasures of the world. As a matter of fact, they are cause of their misery and sufferings. Quran states
وَلَا یَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا أَنَّمَا نُمْلِی لَهُمْ خَیْرٌ لِّأَنفُسِهِمْ ۚ إِنَّمَا نُمْلِی لَهُمْ لِیَزْدَادُوا إِثْمًا ۚ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّهِینٌ
Let not the Unbelievers think that our respite to them is good for themselves: We grant them respite that they may grow in their iniquity: But they will have a shameful punishment''.
Quran states
وَاكْتُبْ لَنَا فِی هَٰذِهِ الدُّنْیَا حَسَنَةً وَفِی الْآخِرَةِ إِنَّا هُدْنَا إِلَیْكَ ۚ قَالَ عَذَابِی أُصِیبُ بِهِ مَنْ أَشَاءُ ۖ وَرَحْمَتِی وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَیْءٍ ۚ فَسَأَكْتُبُهَا لِلَّذِینَ یَتَّقُونَ وَیُؤْتُونَ الزَّكَاةَ وَالَّذِینَ هُم بِآیَاتِنَا یُؤْمِنُونَ
And ordain for us that which is good, in this life and in the Hereafter: for we have turned unto Thee." He said: "With My punishment I visit whom I will; but My mercy extendeth to all things. That (mercy) I shall ordain for those who do right, and practise regular charity, and those who believe in Our signs.
الَّذِینَ یَتَّبِعُونَ الرَّسُولَ النَّبِیَّ الْأُمِّیَّ الَّذِی یَجِدُونَهُ مَكْتُوبًا عِندَهُمْ فِی التَّوْرَاةِ وَالْإِنجِیلِ یَأْمُرُهُم بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَیَنْهَاهُمْ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ وَیُحِلُّ لَهُمُ الطَّیِّبَاتِ وَیُحَرِّمُ عَلَیْهِمُ الْخَبَائِثَ وَیَضَعُ عَنْهُمْ إِصْرَهُمْ وَالْأَغْلَالَ الَّتِی كَانَتْ عَلَیْهِمْ ۚ فَالَّذِینَ آمَنُوا بِهِ وَعَزَّرُوهُ وَنَصَرُوهُ وَاتَّبَعُوا النُّورَ الَّذِی أُنزِلَ مَعَهُ ۙ أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ
Those who follow the messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own (scriptures),- in the law and the Gospel;- for he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them from what is bad (and impure); He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes that are upon them. So it is those who believe in him, honour him, help him, and follow the light which is sent down with him,- it is they who will prosper.
فَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ افْتَرَىٰ عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا أَوْ كَذَّبَ بِآیَاتِهِ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ یَنَالُهُمْ نَصِیبُهُم مِّنَ الْكِتَابِ ۖ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا جَاءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُنَا یَتَوَفَّوْنَهُمْ قَالُوا أَیْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ ۖ قَالُوا ضَلُّوا عَنَّا وَشَهِدُوا عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا كَافِرِینَ
Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah or rejects His Signs? For such, their portion appointed must reach them from the Book (of decrees): until, when our messengers (of death) arrive and take their souls, they say: "Where are the things that ye used to invoke besides Allah?" They will reply, "They have left us in the lurch," And they will bear witness against themselves, that they had rejected Allah.
قالَ ادْخُلُوا فِی أُمَمٍ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِكُم مِّنَ الْجِنِّ وَالْإِنسِ فِی النَّارِ ۖ كُلَّمَا دَخَلَتْ أُمَّةٌ لَّعَنَتْ أُخْتَهَا ۖ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا ادَّارَكُوا فِیهَا جَمِیعًا قَالَتْ أُخْرَاهُمْ لِأُولَاهُمْ رَبَّنَا هَٰؤُلَاءِ أَضَلُّونَا فَآتِهِمْ عَذَابًا ضِعْفًا مِّنَ النَّارِ ۖ قَالَ لِكُلٍّ ضِعْفٌ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تَعْلَمُونَ
He will say: "Enter ye in the company of the peoples who passed away before you - men and jinns, - into the Fire." Every time a new people enters, it curses its sister-people (that went before), until they follow each other, all into the Fire. Saith the last about the first: "Our Lord! it is these that misled us: so give them a double penalty in the Fire." He will say: "Doubled for all" : but this ye do not understand.
وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِی صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّ تَجْرِی مِن تَحْتِهِمُ الْأَنْهَارُ ۖ وَقَالُوا الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِی هَدَانَا لِهَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لِنَهْتَدِیَ لَوْلَا أَنْ هَدَانَا اللَّهُ ۖ لَقَدْ جَاءَتْ رُسُلُ رَبِّنَا بِالْحَقِّ ۖ وَنُودُوا أَن تِلْكُمُ الْجَنَّةُ أُورِثْتُمُوهَا بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
And We shall remove from their hearts any lurking sense of injury;- beneath them will be rivers flowing;- and they shall say: "Praise be to Allah, who hath guided us to this (felicity): never could we have found guidance, had it not been for the guidance of Allah: indeed it was the truth, that the messengers of our Lord brought unto us." And they shall hear the cry: "Behold! the garden before you! Ye have been made its inheritors, for your deeds (of righteousness).
هَلْ یَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا تَأْوِیلَهُ ۚ یَوْمَ یَأْتِی تَأْوِیلُهُ یَقُولُ الَّذِینَ نَسُوهُ مِن قَبْلُ قَدْ جَاءَتْ رُسُلُ رَبِّنَا بِالْحَقِّ فَهَل لَّنَا مِن شُفَعَاءَ فَیَشْفَعُوا لَنَا أَوْ نُرَدُّ فَنَعْمَلَ غَیْرَ الَّذِی كُنَّا نَعْمَلُ ۚ قَدْ خَسِرُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ وَضَلَّ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا یَفْتَرُونَ
Do they just wait for the final fulfilment of the event? On the day the event is finally fulfilled, those who disregarded it before will say: "The messengers of our Lord did indeed bring true (tidings). Have we no intercessors now to intercede on our behalf? Or could we be sent back? then should we behave differently from our behaviour in the past." In fact they will have lost their souls, and the things they invented will leave them in the lurch.
إِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ اللَّهُ الَّذِی خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامٍ ثُمَّ اسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ یُغْشِی اللَّیْلَ النَّهَارَ یَطْلُبُهُ حَثِیثًا وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ وَالنُّجُومَ مُسَخَّرَاتٍ بِأَمْرِهِ ۗ أَلَا لَهُ الْخَلْقُ وَالْأَمْرُ ۗ تَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِینَ
Your Guardian-Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority): He draweth the night as a veil o´er the day, each seeking the other in rapid succession: He created the sun, the moon, and the stars, (all) governed by laws under His command. Is it not His to create and to govern? Blessed be Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds.
وَإِلَىٰ ثَمُودَ أَخَاهُمْ صَالِحًا ۗ قَالَ یَا قَوْمِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَٰهٍ غَیْرُهُ ۖ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُم بَیِّنَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ هَٰذِهِ نَاقَةُ اللَّهِ لَكُمْ آیَةً ۖ فَذَرُوهَا تَأْكُلْ فِی أَرْضِ اللَّهِ ۖ وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوءٍ فَیَأْخُذَكُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمٌ (
To the Thamud people (We sent) Salih, one of their own brethren: He said: "O my people! worship Allah: ye have no other god but Him. Now hath come unto you a clear (Sign) from your Lord! This she-camel of Allah is a Sign unto you: So leave her to graze in Allah´s earth, and let her come to no harm, or ye shall be seized with a grievous punishment.
وَإِلَىٰ مَدْیَنَ أَخَاهُمْ شُعَیْبًا ۗ قَالَ یَا قَوْمِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَٰهٍ غَیْرُهُ ۖ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُم بَیِّنَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ فَأَوْفُوا الْكَیْلَ وَالْمِیزَانَ وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا النَّاسَ أَشْیَاءَهُمْ وَلَا تُفْسِدُوا فِی الْأَرْضِ بَعْدَ إِصْلَاحِهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَیْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِینَ
To the Madyan people We sent Shu´aib, one of their own brethren: he said: "O my people! worship Allah; Ye have no other god but Him. Now hath come unto you a clear (Sign) from your Lord! Give just measure and weight, nor withhold from the people the things that are their due; and do no mischief on the earth after it has been set in order: that will be best for you, if ye have Faith.
وَلَا تَقْعُدُوا بِكُلِّ صِرَاطٍ تُوعِدُونَ وَتَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِیلِ اللَّهِ مَنْ آمَنَ بِهِ وَتَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًا ۚ وَاذْكُرُوا إِذْ كُنتُمْ قَلِیلًا فَكَثَّرَكُمْ ۖ وَانظُرُوا كَیْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُفْسِدِینَ
And squat not on every road, breathing threats, hindering from the path of Allah those who believe in Him, and seeking in it something crooked; But remember how ye were little, and He gave you increase. And hold in your mind´s eye what was the end of those who did mischief.
