Tricks imposed on Amir Al-Momenin

When the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) migrated from Mecca toward Medina, he appointed Imam Ali as his successor in Mecca so that he gave back the things that the people had given to the prophet to their owners. Afterward, he was supposed to move toward Medina. When Amir Al-Momenin gave the trusts to the people, Hanzeh Bin Abi Sofyan had Amir Vael Saghafi go to the presence of Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him) and demand eighty mesghal gold and said to him '' if Hazrat Ali wants you some witnesses , we will send Ghoreish to attest for you ''. He gave him hundred mesghal gold as reward for example the necklace that weighed thirteen mesghal. Amir went to Amir Al-Momenin(peace be upon him) and demanded him his trust. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) saw all of trusts, but he did not see any trusts in the name of Amir and recognized that he had told a lie. Then he advised him not to tell a lie, but it was futile and he already insisted on his claim and said '' I have witnesses from Ghoreish that can attest such as Abu Jahl, Akrame, Aghabe Bin Abi Moit, Abu Sofyan and Hamzeh. Amir Al-Momenin(peace be upon him) said '' this is a trick that comes back to someone that had planned it''. Then he ordered all of witnesses to get ready and to sit in the house of Kabe. He looked at Amir and told him '' Now tell me when you gave the trust to the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants). Amir said '' it was around the noon that I gave the trust to him and he took and gave it to his servant''. Then he summoned Abu Jahl and asked the same question, but Abu Jahl said '' there is no need to answer it; therefore, he freed himself. Then Imam Ali summoned Abu Sogyan and asked him the same question. Abu Sofyan answered '' It was around the sunset that Amir gave his trust to the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) and he took it and put in into his sleeve'' .Then It was the turn of Hanze and he said '' as far as I remember, the sun was in the middle of the sky that Amir gave the trust to the prophet. The prophet put it in his sight so that he could pick it up and could take it with him''. Then Hazrat Ali summoned Aghabe and asked the same question. He said '' it was in the afternoon that Amir gave his trust to the prophet (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants). Then the prophet sent the trust to the house''. Amir that had sat there heard all of the details and the contrasts of their remarks. Then Amir Al-Momenin(peace be upon him) looked at Amir and said '' you look pale and distressed''. Amir said '' now I will reveal the fact because a cheater will not achieve to revelation. I swear God that I never left any trusts in Muhammad and Hanzeh and Abu Sofyan incited me and Dinars that are the marriage portion of Mehr, the wife of Abu Sofyan, are with me and they have given me as reward''. Then Amir Al-Momenin(peace be upon him) said '' bring me the sword that is on the corner of the house''. They brought the sword. Imam Ali (pecae be upon him) took the sword, showed them and said '' do you know this sword?'' They said '' yes, this is the sword of Hanzeh''. Abu Sofyan among them said '' this sword has been stolen from Abu Sofyan''. Amir Al-Momenin(peace be upon him) said '' if you tell the truth, what is your servant, Mahla?'' Abu Sofyan said '' he has gone to Taef for a mission''. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said '' I wish he were here and saw him one more. If you are telling the truth, summon him''. Abu Sofyan remained silent and said nothing. Then Imam Ali ordered ten servants of the aristocrats of Ghoreish Tribe to dig a certain place. When they were digging, they saw the corpse Mahla.
Hazrat Ali said '' take it out''. They took it out and carried toward the house of Kabe. Seing the corpse Mahla, they got surprised and asked the reason of his murdering. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said '' Abu Sofyan and his son incited him and had him murder me so that he could be freed. On the way, he invaded me and I cut his neck and took his sword. When they could not implement their trick, they planned another trick, but it was futile''.
Ghodame drank wine; therefore, Umar decided to sentence him according to the religion. Ghodame said to Umar '' I should not be sentenced because God states in Quran
لیس علی الذین آمنوا و عملوا الصالحات جناح فیما طعموا
'' O' persons that believe in God and do good deeds are not sinners if you can eat anything whenever you believe in God do good actions''. Therefore, Umar ignored him. Amir Al-Momenin (peace be upon him) heard this, went to Umar and said to him '' why haven't you sentenced Ghodame?''Umar said '' Ghodame recited this verse for me and considered his situation according to this verse''. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) expressed '' Ghodame does not have like the said situation in this verse because the persons that believe in God and do good deeds, never consider haram things as halal things. Now summon Ghodame, have him repent from his remarks and sentence him and if he does not repent, murder him because he has left the Islam''. Umar got his wrong action and summoned Ghodame and when Ghodame informed of the event, he went to Umar and repented. Umar refused to murder to him and when he wanted to lash him, he did not know how much he had drank; hence, he wanted to get guide from Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him). Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said to him '' the sentence is eighty lashes because if someone drinks wine, he or she goes drunken and says nonsense remarks and insults people''. Then Umar sentenced him according to the order of Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him).
A man confessed that he had committed incest!
A man came to the presence of Amir Al-Momenin(peace be upon him) and said '' O' Amir Al-Momenin! I have committed incest; purify me''.
Amir Al-Momenin(peace be upon him) turned his head away from him and said to him '' sit down. Then he looked at other persons that were there and said '' isn't is possible that a person among you commits a sin and hides it as God has hidden it (it is meant in directly that he should hide his sin and should not reveal it). The main purpose of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) was that the man should have refused to confess his sin).
The man said once more '' O' Amir Al-Momenin! I have committed incest; purify me''.

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said to him '' what has made you confess your sin?''
The man said '' I have confessed it because I want to be purified''.
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said to him'' what is better than repenting?'' He looked at his companions and started talking with them.
The man stood up and said '' O' Amir Al-Momenin! I have committed incest; purify me''.
Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him) asked him '' do you recite Quran?''
He answered '' yes I do''.
Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him) said to him '' recite it''. The man recited some verses of Quran correctly. Amir Al-Momenin asked him again '' do you know necessary matters related to praying and paying zakat fom the rights of God?''
He answered '' yes, I do''.
Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him) asked him some matters and the man answered them correctly. Imam Ali said to him '' aren't you sick? Don't you feel headache and do you have pain on your chest?''
He answered '' no, I don't''.
Amir Al-Momenin (peace be upon him) said to him '' woe you! Go and as we have asked your situation, we will ask your situation in your absence. If you do not come back, we will not summon you. When the man left there, Imam Ali asked his friends about his mental and physical health. They said '' he is completely prefect physically and mentally''.
After a while, the man came and said '' I have committed incest; purify me''.
Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him) said to him '' if you were not here, we would not summon you. Now that you have come here for the fourth time, we will obey the order of God about you and will not free you''.
Then he said to the persons that were there '' there are enough persons here to sentence this man to death and there is no need to announce it to others. I swear you to God that you come there around the dawn and cover your faces with mask in the way that you cannot recognize each other because we will not look at the person that we are going to lapidate''.
Next day in the morning, they attended there around dawn according to the order of Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him). Amir Al-Momenin (peace be upon him) came there and said '' I swear you to God that every one that deserved to be sentenced to death should not sentence another person to death because a person that should be punished by God should not punish others''.
Then a lot of persons that had attended there came back. The narrator says '' I swear God that I did not know how many persons came back and who they were''. Then Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him) hit him with four stones and others hit him with stones as well.
A woman was afraid of the torture of the hell.
A pregnant woman came to the presence of Amir Al-Momenin (peace be upon him) and said '' I have committed incest. Purify me. I hope God purifies you because the torture of the life is easier than the punishment of the doomsday that has no ending''.
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) stated'' from what do I purify you?''
He answered '' you should purify me from incest that I have committed''.
Amir Al-Momenin(peace be upon him) asked '' are you a husband?''
The woman answred '' yes, I am''.
Amir Al-Momenin(peace be upon him) asked '' when you committed this sin, was your husband on trip or at home?''
The woman answered '' he was at home''.
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said '' now come back and when you bore a child, come back so that I purify you. When the woman left Imam Ali (peace be upon him), she said in the way that Imam Ali could not hear her remarks '' O' God! This is an attestation''.
After a while, the woman came to the presence of Amir Al-Momenin (peace be upon him) and said '' I have born my child; therefore, purify me''.
In such a time, Imam Ali (peace be upon him) pretended that he knew nothing of her past. Hence, he said '' from what I should purify you?''
The woman said '' I have committed incest; therefore, purify me''.
Amir Al-Momenin(peace be upon him) asked '' did you have a husband when you committed incest?''
The woman answered '' yes, I had a husband''.
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) asked '' was your husband at home or on trip?''
The woman answered '' he was at home''.
Breast feed your child for two years according to the order of God. The woman came back and when the woman left Imam Ali (peace be upon him), she said in the way that Imam Ali could not hear her remarks '' O' God! This is an attestation''.
After two years passed, the woman came back and said '' O' Amir Al-Momenin! I breast feasted my child for two years. Now purify me''.
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) pretended that he knew nothing of her past; therefore, he asked the same questions. Then he said to him '' now go and take care of your child until he can feed himself, does not fall down from the roof and does not fall into the well. The woman left Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him) as he was crying. When the woman left Imam Ali (peace be upon him), she said in the way that Imam Ali could not heare her remarks '' O' God! This is an attestation''.
