The uses of the word ''day'' in Quran
1. From the dawn until sunset
Quran states
أَیَّامًا مَّعْدُودَاتٍ ۚ فَمَن كَانَ مِنكُم مَّرِیضًا أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَیَّامٍ أُخَرَ ۚ وَعَلَى الَّذِینَ یُطِیقُونَهُ فِدْیَةٌ طَعَامُ مِسْكِینٍ ۖ فَمَن تَطَوَّعَ خَیْرًا فَهُوَ خَیْرٌ لَّهُ ۚ وَأَن تَصُومُوا خَیْرٌ لَّكُمْ ۖ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
(Fasting) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (Should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will,- it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew.
وَجَعَلْنَا بَیْنَهُمْ وَبَیْنَ الْقُرَى الَّتِی بَارَكْنَا فِیهَا قُرًى ظَاهِرَةً وَقَدَّرْنَا فِیهَا السَّیْرَ ۖ سِیرُوا فِیهَا لَیَالِیَ وَأَیَّامًا آمِنِینَ
Between them and the Cities on which We had poured our blessings, We had placed Cities in prominent positions, and between them We had appointed stages of journey in due proportion: "Travel therein, secure, by night and by day.
سَخَّرَهَا عَلَیْهِمْ سَبْعَ لَیَالٍ وَثَمَانِیَةَ أَیَّامٍ حُسُومًا فَتَرَى الْقَوْمَ فِیهَا صَرْعَىٰ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ خَاوِیَةٍ
He made it rage against them seven nights and eight days in succession: so that thou couldst see the (whole) people lying prostrate in its (path), as they had been roots of hollow palm-trees tumbled down.
2. Time (whether day or night)
Quran states
كُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا هَنِیئًا بِمَا أَسْلَفْتُمْ فِی الْأَیَّامِ الْخَالِیَةِ
Eat ye and drink ye, with full satisfaction; because of the (good) that ye sent before you, in the days that are gone.
وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَیَّ یَوْمَ وُلِدتُّ وَیَوْمَ أَمُوتُ وَیَوْمَ أُبْعَثُ حَیًّا
So peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day that I shall be raised up to life (again).
3. The doomsday
Quran states
فَكَیْفَ تَتَّقُونَ إِن كَفَرْتُمْ یَوْمًا یَجْعَلُ الْوِلْدَانَ شِیبًا
Then how shall ye, if ye deny (Allah), guard yourselves against a Day that will make children hoary-headed.
وْمَ تَرْجُفُ الْأَرْضُ وَالْجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ الْجِبَالُ كَثِیبًا مَّهِیلًا
One Day the earth and the mountains will be in violent commotion. And the mountains will be as a heap of sand poured out and flowing down.
إِنَّ فِی ذَٰلِكَ لَآیَةً لِّمَنْ خَافَ عَذَابَ الْآخِرَةِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ یَوْمٌ مَّجْمُوعٌ لَّهُ النَّاسُ وَذَٰلِكَ یَوْمٌ مَّشْهُودٌ
In that is a Sign for those who fear the penalty of the Hereafter: that is a Day for which mankind will be gathered together: that will be a Day of Testimony.
وَمَا نُؤَخِّرُهُ إِلَّا لِأَجَلٍ مَّعْدُودٍ
Nor shall We delay it but for a term appointed.
یَوْمَ یَأْتِ لَا تَكَلَّمُ نَفْسٌ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ ۚ فَمِنْهُمْ شَقِیٌّ وَسَعِیدٌ
The day it arrives, no soul shall speak except by His leave: of those (gathered) some will be wretched and some will be blessed.
یَوْمَئِذٍ یَصْدُرُ النَّاسُ أَشْتَاتًا لِّیُرَوْا أَعْمَالَهُمْ
On that Day will men proceed in companies sorted out, to be shown the deeds that they (had done).
تَعْرُجُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ إِلَیْهِ فِی یَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِینَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ
The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years.
4. A period of time
Quran states
Exalted God states
إِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ اللَّهُ الَّذِی خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامٍ ثُمَّ اسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ یُغْشِی اللَّیْلَ النَّهَارَ یَطْلُبُهُ حَثِیثًا وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ وَالنُّجُومَ مُسَخَّرَاتٍ بِأَمْرِهِ ۗ أَلَا لَهُ الْخَلْقُ وَالْأَمْرُ ۗ تَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِینَ
Your Guardian-Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority): He draweth the night as a veil o´er the day, each seeking the other in rapid succession: He created the sun, the moon, and the stars, (all) governed by laws under His command. Is it not His to create and to govern? Blessed be Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds.
الَّذِی خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَیْنَهُمَا فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامٍ ثُمَّ اسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ ۚ الرَّحْمَٰنُ فَاسْأَلْ بِهِ خَبِیرًا
He Who created the heavens and the earth and all that is between, in six days, and is firmly established on the Throne (of Authority): Allah Most Gracious: ask thou, then, about Him of any acquainted (with such things).
اللَّهُ الَّذِی خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَیْنَهُمَا فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامٍ ثُمَّ اسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ ۖ مَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِهِ مِن وَلِیٍّ وَلَا شَفِیعٍ ۚ أَفَلَا تَتَذَكَّرُونَ
It is Allah Who has created the heavens and the earth, and all between them, in six Days, and is firmly established on the Throne (of Authority): ye have none, besides Him, to protect or intercede (for you): will ye not then receive admonition.
وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَیْنَهُمَا فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامٍ وَمَا مَسَّنَا مِن لُّغُوبٍ
We created the heavens and the earth and all between them in Six Days, nor did any sense of weariness touch Us.
إِن یَمْسَسْكُمْ قَرْحٌ فَقَدْ مَسَّ الْقَوْمَ قَرْحٌ مِّثْلُهُ ۚ وَتِلْكَ الْأَیَّامُ نُدَاوِلُهَا بَیْنَ النَّاسِ وَلِیَعْلَمَ اللَّهُ الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا وَیَتَّخِذَ مِنكُمْ شُهَدَاءَ ۗ وَاللَّهُ لَا یُحِبُّ الظَّالِمِینَ
If a wound hath touched you, be sure a similar wound hath touched the others. Such days (of varying fortunes) We give to men and men by turns: that Allah may know those that believe, and that He may take to Himself from your ranks Martyr-witnesses (to Truth). And Allah loveth not those that do wrong.
فَهَلْ یَنتَظِرُونَ إِلَّا مِثْلَ أَیَّامِ الَّذِینَ خَلَوْا مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ قُلْ فَانتَظِرُوا إِنِّی مَعَكُم مِّنَ الْمُنتَظِرِینَ
Do they then expect (any thing) but (what happened in) the days of the men who passed away before them? Say: "Wait ye then: for I, too, will wait with you.
فَقَضَاهُنَّ سَبْعَ سَمَاوَاتٍ فِی یَوْمَیْنِ وَأَوْحَىٰ فِی كُلِّ سَمَاءٍ أَمْرَهَا ۚ وَزَیَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْیَا بِمَصَابِیحَ وَحِفْظًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَقْدِیرُ الْعَزِیزِ الْعَلِیمِ
So He completed them as seven firmaments in two Days, and He assigned to each heaven its duty and command. And We adorned the lower heaven with lights, and (provided it) with guard. Such is the Decree of (Him) the Exalted in Might, Full of Knowledge.
قُلْ أَئِنَّكُمْ لَتَكْفُرُونَ بِالَّذِی خَلَقَ الْأَرْضَ فِی یَوْمَیْنِ وَتَجْعَلُونَ لَهُ أَندَادًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِینَ
Say: Is it that ye deny Him Who created the earth in two Days? And do ye join equals with Him? He is the Lord of (all) the Worlds.
وَجَعَلَ فِیهَا رَوَاسِیَ مِن فَوْقِهَا وَبَارَكَ فِیهَا وَقَدَّرَ فِیهَا أَقْوَاتَهَا فِی أَرْبَعَةِ أَیَّامٍ سَوَاءً لِّلسَّائِلِینَ
He set on the (earth), mountains standing firm, high above it, and bestowed blessings on the earth, and measure therein all things to give them nourishment in due proportion, in four Days, in accordance with (the needs of) those who seek (Sustenance).
أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ لَیْلَةَ الصِّیَامِ الرَّفَثُ إِلَىٰ نِسَائِكُمْ ۚ هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَّكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لِبَاسٌ لَّهُنَّ ۗ عَلِمَ اللَّهُ أَنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَخْتَانُونَ أَنفُسَكُمْ فَتَابَ عَلَیْكُمْ وَعَفَا عَنكُمْ ۖ فَالْآنَ بَاشِرُوهُنَّ وَابْتَغُوا مَا كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ ۚ وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّىٰ یَتَبَیَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَیْطُ الْأَبْیَضُ مِنَ الْخَیْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ ۖ ثُمَّ أَتِمُّوا الصِّیَامَ إِلَى اللَّیْلِ ۚ وَلَا تُبَاشِرُوهُنَّ وَأَنتُمْ عَاكِفُونَ فِی الْمَسَاجِدِ ۗ تِلْكَ حُدُودُ اللَّهِ فَلَا تَقْرَبُوهَا ۗ كَذَٰلِكَ یُبَیِّنُ اللَّهُ آیَاتِهِ لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ یَتَّقُونَ
Permitted to you, on the night of the fasts, is the approach to your wives. They are your garments and ye are their garments. Allah knoweth what ye used to do secretly among yourselves; but He turned to you and forgave you; so now associate with them, and seek what Allah Hath ordained for you, and eat and drink, until the white thread of dawn appear to you distinct from its black thread; then complete your fast Till the night appears; but do not associate with your wives while ye are in retreat in the mosques. Those are Limits (set by) Allah: Approach not nigh thereto. Thus doth Allah make clear His Signs to men: that they may learn self-restraint?
وَأَتِمُّوا الْحَجَّ وَالْعُمْرَةَ لِلَّهِ ۚ فَإِنْ أُحْصِرْتُمْ فَمَا اسْتَیْسَرَ مِنَ الْهَدْیِ ۖ وَلَا تَحْلِقُوا رُءُوسَكُمْ حَتَّىٰ یَبْلُغَ الْهَدْیُ مَحِلَّهُ ۚ فَمَن كَانَ مِنكُم مَّرِیضًا أَوْ بِهِ أَذًى مِّن رَّأْسِهِ فَفِدْیَةٌ مِّن صِیَامٍ أَوْ صَدَقَةٍ أَوْ نُسُكٍ ۚ فَإِذَا أَمِنتُمْ فَمَن تَمَتَّعَ بِالْعُمْرَةِ إِلَى الْحَجِّ فَمَا اسْتَیْسَرَ مِنَ الْهَدْیِ ۚ فَمَن لَّمْ یَجِدْ فَصِیَامُ ثَلَاثَةِ أَیَّامٍ فِی الْحَجِّ وَسَبْعَةٍ إِذَا رَجَعْتُمْ ۗ تِلْكَ عَشَرَةٌ كَامِلَةٌ ۗ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَن لَّمْ یَكُنْ أَهْلُهُ حَاضِرِی الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ ۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِیدُ الْعِقَابِ
And complete the Hajj or ´umra in the service of Allah. But if ye are prevented (From completing it), send an offering for sacrifice, such as ye may find, and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches the place of sacrifice. And if any of you is ill, or has an ailment in his scalp, (Necessitating shaving), (He should) in compensation either fast, or feed the poor, or offer sacrifice; and when ye are in peaceful conditions (again), if any one wishes to continue the ´umra on to the hajj, He must make an offering, such as he can afford, but if he cannot afford it, He should fast three days during the hajj and seven days on his return, Making ten days in all. This is for those whose household is not in (the precincts of) the Sacred Mosque. And fear Allah, and know that Allah Is strict in punishment.
وَلَا تَنكِحُوا الْمُشْرِكَاتِ حَتَّىٰ یُؤْمِنَّ ۚ وَلَأَمَةٌ مُّؤْمِنَةٌ خَیْرٌ مِّن مُّشْرِكَةٍ وَلَوْ أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ ۗ وَلَا تُنكِحُوا الْمُشْرِكِینَ حَتَّىٰ یُؤْمِنُوا ۚ وَلَعَبْدٌ مُّؤْمِنٌ خَیْرٌ مِّن مُّشْرِكٍ وَلَوْ أَعْجَبَكُمْ ۗ أُولَٰئِكَ یَدْعُونَ إِلَى النَّارِ ۖ وَاللَّهُ یَدْعُو إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ وَالْمَغْفِرَةِ بِإِذْنِهِ ۖ وَیُبَیِّنُ آیَاتِهِ لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ یَتَذَكَّرُونَ
Do not marry unbelieving women (idolaters), until they believe: A slave woman who believes is better than an unbelieving woman, even though she allures you. Nor marry (your girls) to unbelievers until they believe: A man slave who believes is better than an unbeliever, even though he allures you. Unbelievers do (but) beckon you to the Fire. But Allah beckons by His Grace to the Garden (of bliss) and forgiveness, and makes His Signs clear to mankind: That they may celebrate His praise. .
وَیَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْمَحِیضِ ۖ قُلْ هُوَ أَذًى فَاعْتَزِلُوا النِّسَاءَ فِی الْمَحِیضِ ۖ وَلَا تَقْرَبُوهُنَّ حَتَّىٰ یَطْهُرْنَ ۖ فَإِذَا تَطَهَّرْنَ فَأْتُوهُنَّ مِنْ حَیْثُ أَمَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ یُحِبُّ التَّوَّابِینَ وَیُحِبُّ الْمُتَطَهِّرِینَ
They ask thee concerning women´s courses. Say: They are a hurt and a pollution: So keep away from women in their courses, and do not approach them until they are clean. But when they have purified themselves, ye may approach them in any manner, time, or place ordained for you by Allah. For Allah loves those who turn to Him constantly and He loves those who keep themselves pure and clean.
وَالْمُطَلَّقَاتُ یَتَرَبَّصْنَ بِأَنفُسِهِنَّ ثَلَاثَةَ قُرُوءٍ ۚ وَلَا یَحِلُّ لَهُنَّ أَن یَكْتُمْنَ مَا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ فِی أَرْحَامِهِنَّ إِن كُنَّ یُؤْمِنَّ بِاللَّهِ وَالْیَوْمِ الْآخِرِ ۚ وَبُعُولَتُهُنَّ أَحَقُّ بِرَدِّهِنَّ فِی ذَٰلِكَ إِنْ أَرَادُوا إِصْلَاحًا ۚ وَلَهُنَّ مِثْلُ الَّذِی عَلَیْهِنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ ۚ وَلِلرِّجَالِ عَلَیْهِنَّ دَرَجَةٌ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَزِیزٌ حَكِیمٌ
Divorced women shall wait concerning themselves for three monthly periods. Nor is it lawful for them to hide what Allah Hath created in their wombs, if they have faith in Allah and the Last Day. And their husbands have the better right to take them back in that period, if they wish for reconciliation. And women shall have rights similar to the rights against them, according to what is equitable; but men have a degree (of advantage) over them. And Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise.
وَالَّذِینَ یُتَوَفَّوْنَ مِنكُمْ وَیَذَرُونَ أَزْوَاجًا یَتَرَبَّصْنَ بِأَنفُسِهِنَّ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا ۖ فَإِذَا بَلَغْنَ أَجَلَهُنَّ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیْكُمْ فِیمَا فَعَلْنَ فِی أَنفُسِهِنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِیرٌ
If any of you die and leave widows behind, they shall wait concerning themselves four months and ten days: When they have fulfilled their term, there is no blame on you if they dispose of themselves in a just and reasonable manner. And Allah is well acquainted with what ye do.
