In the needle knitting of MAMAGHAN, in the circle called the moon, a design can be found and in the Iranian culture which is known as the eight wings star or SHAMSE. Paying attention to this matter that, drawing of this star is accompanied by the drawing of the moon and is not separate from it, so we refrain from re-commenting on this issue. And just concentrate on this form and its historical background:
The design of the star (SHAMSE) has been widely used in Iranian and Islamic arts and architecture. Since the adoption of Islamic religion in Iran and it`s prevalence, the boycotting of painting and statue making in this religion has never stopped Iranian art virtue.
The use of geometric motifs, sometimes isolated and sometimes repeated, was a good decision to this route. It was so eloquent that in a short time these designs reached the highest degree in beauty and harmony. It was not long before these forms opened their way into mosques and places of worship, and so mixed with its atmosphere and architecture that they spread wherever Islam went. Naming these motifs as ESLIMI is well illustrated by this issue. Some of these designs are much older than Islam, were later refined and adapted to the spiritual and religious spirit of this great religion, which soon used in the widespread Islamic lands in architecture and other art
Meanwhile, the role of Iranians has been extremely important. With attention to this matter that Arabic art, especially in Saudi Arabia, was simply summarized in poetry and simple handmade things in daily life such as idols, etc., they did not have much to say in other artistic fields, and what the Islamic template art took on itself and made it booming, was the art of other Islamic countries, especially Iran, which at that time contained a vast geographical area, much broader than its current borders.
If we take a closer look at the role of the star in the MAMGHAN needle knitting, we realize that it is very similar to one of the oldest and most famous designs of ancient Iran, which means "Lotus flower "in Persepolis.
Lotus twelve wing flowers have been abundantly used in Persepolis. These motifs, except for their joy and freshness, were probably showing twelve months of the year and twelve constellations. Noticing that ACHAEMENIAN Empire had a wide geographical region and had many interactions with its neighboring states, and employed many from other countries to build their palaces, so, there was possibility of an impact from these cultures. Considering that on both sides of the ACHAEMENID Empire, Indian and Egyptian civilizations used Lotus flower as a sacred symbol.
The eight wing flower used in the Sassanid era is likely depicted in the same manner as today's design in MAMAGHAN weaving.
In the culture of Iran before and after Islam, eight wings, twelve wings and sixteen wings and more have been used abundantly. Although may be primary purpose of utilizing these designs, was decorating, but each of these designs had their own philosophy.
In the NAGHSH BISTOUN of Kermanshah, an eight wings star can be seen in a circle above a cylindrical hat of FORUHAR, which is also seen on the beautiful crenate crown of Darius. Perhaps this way, DARIUSH shows his divinity.
In KHORASAN after entrance of Islam, the design of the eight wing stars in their garments, especially in women's apparel, shows their deep belief in Imam Reza. In some cases, the use of the five-pointed star shows faith in the five principles of religion (from the Shia point of view) or their devotion toward five holy leaders.
In the decoration of buildings, as well as tile works and enamel works, after entrance of Islam, eight wing stars, twelve wing stars, sixteen wing stars, and ... have been used extensively.
The use of the eight wings star in Anatolian rug is also common, which is a symbol of cheerfulness and happiness.
However, although the designation of the figures is to examine the background and the reason for the use of motifs in MAMGHAN knitting, and stating that, this figure does not have an independent name in this city, and, as already mentioned, along with its circle around is known as" Moon ". Sometimes, it's necessary to separate this from the figure of "I" or [1],"or in the middle of moon figure ", so it is known as ORTA GOLI ritual.
Along with eight wings star, which is the most use in star designs, the use of four and six wings star are also common in MAMGHAN weaving .
