Mythology represents norms, symbols and common cultural, religious, and moral values of an ethnic group or nation through art, literature, religion and social studies. The power and influence of mythological thoughts are visible in motifs and patterns of the Persian carpet industry. Ancient beliefs of villagers, and nomads passed down from past generations are depicted in the Persian carpets. Motifs created based on religious and moral values, world and hereafter, and good and evil forces in Ahura Mazda’s thoughts, express the Persian ancient background, which has survived over many years. After the introduction of Islam, shapes and motifs of the carpets evolved while they indicated the same old values. The role of mythology in Persian carpets is examined to protect this cultural heritage, recognize and produce it in the world so that Persian national and local cultures are promoted opposed to the world culture in modern times and post-modern era.
