Abadan's airport is located in the south-westernmost of the country whose west edge of its runway lies on the border of Iraq. The fairly small airport is the second oldest in Iran. On Azadi boulevard which leads from the airport to the city lie two hotels of Parsian and Karevansara, among the most luxurious and well-renowned hotels. Of course inside the city too there are other hotels like Amir Kabir, Zeitun, Keivan and Azadi.
The yummy foods to try in Abadan are as follows:
Falafel
It's not only diverse but easy-made.
The stores serving it offer new Falafel besides the authentic Falafel; Falasis, Falafel and sausages, Falaberger, Falafel and burger, Falamix, Falafel and Bandari sausages, and various Indian , pizza, and morsel Sam Bose.
It's a famous cuisine in Abadan.
Beryani or grilled Dal Adasi
Not related to the famous Beryani in Isfahan. It's meat and chicken pieces mixed in rice with abundant spices and pepper.
Chicken Beryani with Dal Adasi, a kind of lentil, is also perfect.
Iraqi Kobe
The mashed potatoes, eggs, and cooked rice with turmeric, salt, in the middle of it goes minced meat, ground walnut and onions. It's a lump of rice and greasy meat which makes your hands oily.
Ghaliyeh Mani
Pieces of croaker fish in a bowl filled with tamarind and spice. It is sour. Ghalye Meigo, made of shrimps, is also yummy.
Sabur Mani
The most delicious yet the greasiest seafood which is usually cooked over the roofs in summer. Since it is sort of heavy, it is eaten on Friday noon so that one could take a nap after. The bony fish is cut skillfully, spices are added and then go for a grill.
Dates
12,000 hectares of palm groves in Abadan produce 70,000 tons of dates of various types. For the things to take home our options are, packages of dates, Kherbati, a kind of yellow-colored edible thing made by straw, Ranginak or a rainbow of colors, which is a combination of dates, flour, oil, and honey along with dates sap and sesame.
A look at interesting and spectacular highlights of the city
Abadan, the city of pleasantness
Several days of wandering and hours of promenading in the city with warm and friendly residents would reveal some remarkable places.
What comes here is only a short introduction to few parts of the city. Obviously, some have been left out because of shortage of time. But thses are enough to encourage you to visit the place.
Church and mosque
It's the only point in Iran where church and mosque are neighbors. The Armenian church in the courtyard of Adab school lies right next to the mosque of Imam Musa Kazim PBUH , also known as Behbahani mosque.
Nearby the church is the memorial of the massacre of the Armenians by the Ottoman.
Lane
It's taken from the English word of lane. The neighborhood of Ahmad Abad where the workers ranking from 1 to 5 grade live. It does contain 15 main lanes ( north-south) and 13 side lanes ( east-west). The old market of the city is housed on the #1lane where you can find everything there. It has
The fishmongers market
The yuck smell of fish is everywhere but you can see liveliness at each turn. A structure with 3 slippery corridors. Their two sides are lined with fishmongers stands whose areas hardly ever reach 4 square meters.
There is a wet and lubricated and oily counter filled with fish in their front.
On the white boards the names of the small , medium-sized and large fish are written along with their prices and dates when they were caught.
It would remind you of exchange stores where the gold coins and currencies like dollars are updated and exchanged every day. Beside it, stands the fishing pier of Samenolaemmeh with a small glass room beyond where some men and women dressed in white are busy wiping the fish.
Takhti stadium
Abadan or Iran's Brazil is a place of the old and large stadium with two cement platforms on the east and west of the grassy football pitch.
The gray-colored platforms grow yellow once the team of Sanat Naft Abadan hit the field for their local matches. Outside the stadium several teen boys sell up Bamiye, a kind of Persian sweet, and inside you will hear the drums and cymbals.
On the east platforms you can witness the pipes of the oil refinery located on the west hand side of the stadium.Naft-e Abadan has been left behibd the Iran's premier league for quite some time.
Bovardeh
It's the place where the medium-ranked engineers of the oil company live in two parts of north and south sides.
Those who are graded 5 to 10 live on the area.
It belongs to a wealthy man who only had one daughter named Vardeh, or red flower. He was called Abu Vardeh meaning the father of Vardeh. Later on it evolved to Buvardeh by locals.
Bahmanshir
The 90-km river of Bahmanshir with a width of 600 m and a depth of almost 4m still remains intact in its original shape.
Its name has been taken from a city with the same name in the current Abadan which was built in the reign of Ardeshir Babakan , the founder of the Sassanid dynasty.
Nearby the river lies the shore park. Some of the residents of Abadan live on the bank of the river.
Located on the north island of Abadan it ultimately pours into the Persian Gulf.
The Imam Khomeini street is where sailors who import goods hang out. It is packed with people on Newruz holidays.
The 500- meter- long street and its encompassing alleys are a nightly spot for gatherings.
At its end stands the extensive market in two floors.
Berim
The secluded part of the city is inhabited by the distinguished workers of the oil company. The township with villas has a guardian and it is forbidden for others to wander in at night. All its underground wiring and coolers and repair services are done by the oil company.
It is located on the edge of Arvand Rud river and that's why its name is driven from the English brim.
There are other accounts about its name origin; it is said that it is a place where Berim dates are grown or perhaps it was owned by a person known as Abu Ibrahim.
Imam Reza's Ghadamgah ( foothold)
It is a corner of serenity and peace. The newly-built small octagonal building lies in the middle of a smooth field.
It is the first part of the Iranian land where Imam Reza PBUH set foot on while migrating from Medine to Marv.
Rex cinema
37 years ago, on Mordad 28 ,1357,there was a cinema which burned to destruction and 277 viewers inside burned to death while watching the movie of " The deer" by Kimiyai.
There is no more sign of the cinema today. There is only a black 4-meter rock on which the 4-line story of how it caught fire is written.
Arvand Rud
Although the city features the river of Arvand Rud , the people can't access it as the military fences, the refinery, the airport , custom office and the port make it all impossible.
The 110 -kilometer river measures a width of 2,000 m. 4 times a day the tides happen and each year 5 tons of the deposits of Karun, Tigris and Euphrates pour into the Persian Gulf.
Beyond Arvand river, Iraqis come over to visit it on Friday afternoons.
It is a broad river in the southwest of the country on the border of Iran and Iraq.
Sayyed Abbas
I'll go and make a wish! Oh Sayyed Abbas, come and do me a favor ! A favor to the lonely heart on Friday nights. It is a part of Khorramshahr bazaar's song by Mohsen Chavoshi which well describes the significance of the pilgrim site.
Drivers and locals bow putting their hands on the chest and say hi when they pass by the metal dome of the shrine. It is not Imamzadeh, the shrine of Imam's offspring, and surprisingly it is not old either.
There are 3 graves with marble stones, where 3 Sayyeds, named Abbas, Yasin and Saed, who are believed to be the offsprings of Imam Musa Kazem PBUH were buried. They came to Iran from Saudi Arabia 100 years ago when the Wahhabis came to power.Whoever enters there kisses the stones and stares at Yasin's photo.
