Few who know Yazd and its historic sites might not have heard of Tagh-e Shah Abbasi, a landmark which is perhapse among the most spectacular historic sites in Tabas and one of the unforgettable highlights in the province of Yazd which carries several unique titles.
It's one of the top record-holders in Iran! A dam with a height of 60 m which is not only the oldest and largest arched dam in the world but it has also been the tallest throughout the globe for 550 years. It's also famous as the thinnest in the world , its crown width is 1meter.
To see it, also known as Shah Abbasi dam , you should travel to the 700-year-old village of Kharu, 27 km from the city of Tabas. It's a place near the Cheshmeh Morteza Ali PBUH hot spa which we have discussed before.
Higher than the spa there is a narrow valley where Tagh-e Shah Abbasi is built. It dates from the Safavid era and it is believed that there are carved inscriptions of a mountainous goat, a symbol of water abundance, vividness, and gifts. Some believed that the goats are symbol of angels who pray on the walls of the monument for protecting water and superfluity of gifts.
If you ever travel to Tab as and the village of Kharu and visit this amazing dam, don't miss the perfect spring of Morteza Ali which will surprise you a lot.
It contains 2 hot and cold parts which are parallel to each other. That is, you can put your foot in cold water and your other foot in the warm!
To go to the spa, you should pass the city of Tabas and after about a 5km walk which goes mainly through water. On the path there are tall walls like valleys on your two sides with small and large organized cavities. Some of them contain bursting springs, the largest of which is known as Hammam-e Morteza Ali.
