Dezful

Dezful is located in the northern plains of Khouzestan province with the area about 4762 square kilometers. The distance of this city is 721 km from Tehran and 155 km from Ahwaz. Dezful has mild and light winters and its green nature is very pleasant in late winter to early spring. This city with its beautiful plains and mountain foothills nature welcomes a large number of domestic and foreign tourists all times of the year, especially during the New Year.
Dezful city is an ancient land with several thousand years of historical background and it is one of the oldest cities in Khuzestan province. This city has outstanding features in terms of history, culture and nature. According to Western explorers in the past half century, including German Walter Hynts, the first wide empire of Avan (the first Iranian government) has been established in the Dezful.

Tappeh-ye Choghā Mīsh

Tappeh-ye Choghā Mīsh, dating back to 4000 years BC that according to the archeologists, is a complete treasure of information from the period belonged several millennia BC to the full flourish of Susa civilization and it is located in Dezful. The traces of an ancient city are found on these hills which is built of baked bricks belonging to the era of rising line and it can be said that this area is the first center of line and book in Iran.
Mrs. Helen counter, member of the Board of excavation and archaeological excavations about Choghā Mīsh researches, in one her speeches in Tehran named Dezful as “the city of the dawn of history”. In different periods, we have seen other outstanding features in this area that Jundi Shapur University can be mentioned.

Jundi Shapur University:

The great University of Jundi Shapur, that is located in a city with this name, can be referred to as the first and largest medical education, philosophy, and astronomy center at the Sassanian era. Scientists from around the world devoted to research and teaching in this university. For this reason, it is mentioned as the first university in the world. The current location of Jundi shapour city is 10 km away from the city center.

Dezful names

Dezful was not known by this name and the ancient names of the city were Avan, Andamesh and Ronash palace. Dezful, in fact, is the Arabic pronounce of the Pahlavi Dezhpul word. This word of pul was taken from a bridge which was built in the time of first Sassanid Shapur using Roman prisoners in Dezful.

The Historic Bridge of Dezful

The old bridge of Dezful is still remained over more than 1700 years (263 AD) and it is known as the oldest brick bridge of the world which remained its glory and greatness and vehicle traffic on it is possible and also, it is registered in the National Heritage List of Iran.

The old texture of Dezful

Old texture of Dezful is one of the special features of Dezful. Brick texture that is formed aside of the Dez River and contains 28 old intertwined neighborhood. Special and unique brick architecture in the old texture of Dezful made this city famous. The texture with its unique architecture has the identity and spirit Dezful’s architecture in itself.

Shrines of Dezful

Holy shrine Muhammad Kazim (AS), brother of Imam Reza (AS), which is famous as Sabz-e Ghaba and it is located in the center of Dezful and adorns the city. Every year, thousands of pilgrims from different cities of the country and foreign pilgrims visit this holy shrine. Also, the holy shrines of Imam Rokn Al-Din, Imam Rousband, Imam Sayyed Davoud, Ali Malek and Mohammad Ibn Jafar Tayyar can be mentioned.
Other monuments and buildings of the city of Dezful are the grand mosque of Dezful, monument of Jacob Laith Safari, historic mills, and many other works.
Great men and women are grown in the brave land of Dezful such as Sheikh Morteza Ansari the great scholar.

Climate of Dezful

Dezful city has a mild climate, but its weather is generally warm and this city is located in the tropical area of the country. This city has mild winters and hot summers. The spectacular natural scenery of this city is bushfires, rivers and wildlife sanctuaries of Dez and Karkheh rivers. Mountainous areas of Dezful are very interesting because of having geographic phenomena such as straits, waterfalls, and caves (with a height of 85 meters and a width of 70 meters, which is the largest waterfall in the Middle East) in addition to suitable route for climbing. Also, the beautiful lake of Shahion which is one of the most beautiful lakes in Iran and in the world is located in the northern of Dezful.
The other natural feature of Dezful is the beautiful river of Dez which is originated from Zagros Mountains and by passing through the middle of Dezful, divides it into two parts and made a pleasant view. Several parks are created near this beautiful river such as Seaside Park of Dez (Ali Kale), Dowlat Park, and Vali-e Asr Park. The eye-catching space of the River with beauties of parks and the possibility of many types of water recreation such as fishing, swimming, sailing and etc. attracted tourists in summer from all over the province and other provinces to use this nature and facilities.
Mountains: Dezful city is created by mountain (Sardasht) and plain (central part). The most important mountains in this area are: Haft tanan, Sagrion, Lop Sefid, Langar and etc.
