It is said that many years ago, an English politician called Bushehr as the greatest see in the world i.e. when you look at the sea aboard a ship, it seems like it’s half under water and there is no horizon.
The southern province of Bushehr lies on the edge of the Persian Gulf. It extends to Khuzestan province and part of the province of Kohgiluye and Boyer Ahmad from north, to the Persian Gulf and a part of Hormozgan province from south , to Fars province from east and to the Persian Gulf from west. Enjoying a strategic location , it has sea borders with the Persian Gulf (over 600 km). The best time to visit is in late autumn, winter and early spring.
In its old architecture you see monuments with abundant rooms and windows which will fascinate tourists. Materials used include sandalwood, teak and colorful crescent shapes . The rich merchants and wealthy people used to live in the city. One rare feature the houses possess is the rooms have been built with Bazsho, tools that have two fixed and moving parts which made it easy for the air to move across the place and prevent severe sunlight.
The urban architecture is rather complicated. The awe-inspiring Malek monument, built 100 years ago, belonged to a merchant who traveled to French in Qajar period and after visiting one of palaces of a minister in the middle age, decided to build a similar one here. When English occupiers came to the region, he was broke and they bought all of his precious antiquity and ancient objects and took them home.
Malek monument
The beautiful and historical landmark ,housed on the Falake Bahmani , was built at the order of Malekotojjar , one great businessman in the Qajar period, by French architects using the local materials.
He fell in love with a house of a French guy in one of his commercial trips to Paris. He then employed architects and built the magnificent monument inspired by the French building, using his own additions too.
Presently, it belongs to a private owner and visits are only possible through arrangements.
Historical school of Saadat
It was built based on the new educational styles at the order of Ahmad Khan Darya Beigi, then governor of Bushehr. It is the eldest in the south of the country. It lies on NamazJome street after the social security office. You can pay a visit in working hours.
Golestan School
About 200 years old, the main building is ,in fact, among buildings with old architecture which was built by the English. Known as Arg , it was first the office of governor Sheikh Nasr , who was chosen by the English, and then was converted into the post and telegraph office.
Later on it was deserted until in 1318 the Golestan School was founded. It is housed on the Gomrok Street, after the official building of Gomrok, opposite the monument of Haj Rais. Like Saadat school is open at working hours.
The precious and tall building lies atop a low hill , 6 meters from the sea. The 150-year-old monument was built by one of the greatest merchants named Haj Abdorrasul Talebi , also known as Haj Rais, in Bushehr in the Qajar period . It is located on the Gomrok Street after the official building of Gomrok. Working hours are visit times.
Ghavam Ab Anbar( where water is stored)
The building lies in the west of the city near the sea. The reservoir ( pond) was built 150 years ago , in the Qajar period. The private section has converted it into a traditional eatery. The working hours are like other restaurants. You are recommended to have a meal there as it features the mouthwatering seafood, and local dishes . You‘ll certainly have an exceptional experience. It’s located on the Saheli Street after the physical education’s building.
The coast park
The coast parks on the edge of a river or sea are among the best recreational resorts for tourists. Ab Shirin Kon is one such example , located on the Bahmani street , on Daneshgah-e Khalij Avenue. A part of the park is a military center but it’s open to the public. It has a restaurant and a coffee shop.
Historical texture of Bushehr
The historical and almost intact texture in the south has many fans.
It is seen in the center of the city and the alleys leading up to the streets of Sheshom-e Bahman and Gomrok. The monuments and houses featuring historical architecture are almost owned by middle – class families and to have a visit you need to make arrangements with their landlords.
The historical region is home to relics dating from the Elamite era . Housed on the Bahmani street, Saheli avenue, opposite the air force hospital , it is now used as a park.

It’s also a place where 35 English soldiers were buried. The tomb with a garden around only one year ago and now the municipality of Bushehr port has turned it into a park. If you’d like to have a visit, you should head to the Sangi street , Tohid avenue, Shabnam 3 alley.

The tomb of the great contemporary poet, Manuchehr Atashi, is also housed here. It is located on the Sabz Abad Street.
Jesus church
The church , on the Sheshom-e Bahman street, dates from the early 19 century AD, when the Hend-e Khavari company was founded. The small building stands near the former embassy of English and the former finance department of Busheher. Known as Aramane it’s always locked.
Head from Bushehr to Borazjan where you’ll gradually come across an expansive field embracing you , which lies on the valleys leading up to the Zagros mountains. As far as eyes could see it is filled with winding pathways and green palm groves that are fed by the rivers of Dalki and Shapur. The late famous poet, Manuchehr Atashi, has described it this way: the palm trees decorate life with their tall and handsome figures in the bitterest expanse of Iran’s land and sweeten life with their juicy fruits.
Street venders sell Panir Khorma( a product made with the interior parts of old palm stems ) on the Borazjan road. After passing through the palm groves you’ll reach the Moshir caravansary ( or Borazjan fortress) which was built at the order of Mirza Borazjan in 1259 ( solar calendar). It was then used as a caravansary and gradually it was converted into a fortress and prison. One km north of the village of Dorudgah , a district in the city of Dashtestan, there are remains of a palace named Bardak-e Siyah within the palm groves. Dating from the Achaemenid era, it was explored by the villagers. It resembles the relics in the personal palace of Cyrus in Pasargad.
Where to buy?
Most visitors would like to go over to the Ganave market ,135 km from Bushehr, and get the exported things coming from overseas. Known as the foreign market, it features a restaurant resembling a ship built on the coast with beautiful exterior. The first thing you might notice once visiting is the clean area which has been organized by the municipality. On the northeast of Ganave there are the remains of ancient hills known as Tale Gonbad. Along the Ganave –Deilam road there is a cave in the heart of mountains within the bushes known as Todio.

Among other things you must take home are date, Masgahti Halva, Arde, Rashi Halva, Sangak Halva, Kharak Pokhte, shrimp and fish, dolls, decorative objects made with shells and wicker baskets woven with the leaves of palm trees.
What to eat?
Among the most memorable moments in your trip would be when you go to the eateries, exhausted, and you are served with fresh seafood. You can’t resist your temptation when it comes to fish foods made with fish such as Shuride , Shir and Halva especially the restaurants scattered across the city where great chefs serve fish. You are recommended not to try anything apart from fish and shrimp. In Bushehr there are great skilled cooks who are good at cooking various fish dishes such as Gahliye, fried fish, stuffed fish and Tah Andaz.
It is 1,228 km from Tehran. So although the roads are fascinating ,it is not easy and convenient to drive your own car or go by bus. The best way is to take a flight , about one and a half hours. There is no railway station.
