The uses of the word ''light'' in Quran
1. Sensational light
Quran states
هُوَ الَّذِی جَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ ضِیَاءً وَالْقَمَرَ نُورًا وَقَدَّرَهُ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعْلَمُوا عَدَدَ السِّنِینَ وَالْحِسَابَ ۚ مَا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ ذَٰلِكَ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ ۚ یُفَصِّلُ الْآیَاتِ لِقَوْمٍ یَعْلَمُونَ
It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory and the moon to be a light (of beauty), and measured out stages for her; that ye might know the number of years and the count (of time). Nowise did Allah create this but in truth and righteousness. (Thus) doth He explain His Signs in detail, for those who understand?
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِی خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَجَعَلَ الظُّلُمَاتِ وَالنُّورَ ۖ ثُمَّ الَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا بِرَبِّهِمْ یَعْدِلُونَ
Praise be Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, and made the darkness and the light. Yet those who reject Faith hold (others) as equal, with their Guardian-Lord .
2. Faith and guidance
Quran states
اللَّهُ وَلِیُّ الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا یُخْرِجُهُم مِّنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ ۖ وَالَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا أَوْلِیَاؤُهُمُ الطَّاغُوتُ یُخْرِجُونَهُم مِّنَ النُّورِ إِلَى الظُّلُمَاتِ ۗ أُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِیهَا خَالِدُونَ
Allah is the Protector of those who have faith: from the depths of darkness He will lead them forth into light. Of those who reject faith the patrons are the evil ones: from light they will lead them forth into the depths of darkness. They will be companions of the fire, to dwell therein (For ever).
یَهْدِی بِهِ اللَّهُ مَنِ اتَّبَعَ رِضْوَانَهُ سُبُلَ السَّلَامِ وَیُخْرِجُهُم مِّنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ بِإِذْنِهِ وَیَهْدِیهِمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِیمٍ
Wherewith Allah guideth all who seek His good pleasure to ways of peace and safety, and leadeth them out of darkness, by His will, unto the light,- guideth them to a path that is straight.
الر ۚ كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ إِلَیْكَ لِتُخْرِجَ النَّاسَ مِنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطِ الْعَزِیزِ الْحَمِیدِ
A. L. R. A Book which We have revealed unto thee, in order that thou mightest lead mankind out of the depths of darkness into light - by the leave of their Lord - to the Way of (Him) the Exalted in power, worthy of all praise.
أَفَمَن شَرَحَ اللَّهُ صَدْرَهُ لِلْإِسْلَامِ فَهُوَ عَلَىٰ نُورٍ مِّن رَّبِّهِ ۚ فَوَیْلٌ لِّلْقَاسِیَةِ قُلُوبُهُم مِّن ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ فِی ضَلَالٍ مُّبِینٍ
Is one whose heart Allah has opened to Islam, so that he has received Enlightenment from Allah, (no better than one hard-hearted)? Woe to those whose hearts are hardened against celebrating the praises of Allah! they are manifestly wandering (in error).
فَمَن یُرِدِ اللَّهُ أَن یَهْدِیَهُ یَشْرَحْ صَدْرَهُ لِلْإِسْلَامِ ۖ وَمَن یُرِدْ أَن یُضِلَّهُ یَجْعَلْ صَدْرَهُ ضَیِّقًا حَرَجًا كَأَنَّمَا یَصَّعَّدُ فِی السَّمَاءِ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ یَجْعَلُ اللَّهُ الرِّجْسَ عَلَى الَّذِینَ لَا یُؤْمِنُونَ
Those whom Allah (in His plan) willeth to guide,- He openeth their breast to Islam; those whom He willeth to leave straying,- He maketh their breast close and constricted, as if they had to climb up to the skies: thus doth Allah (heap) the penalty on those who refuse to believe.
اللَّهُ نُورُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۚ مَثَلُ نُورِهِ كَمِشْكَاةٍ فِیهَا مِصْبَاحٌ ۖ الْمِصْبَاحُ فِی زُجَاجَةٍ ۖ الزُّجَاجَةُ كَأَنَّهَا كَوْكَبٌ دُرِّیٌّ یُوقَدُ مِن شَجَرَةٍ مُّبَارَكَةٍ زَیْتُونَةٍ لَّا شَرْقِیَّةٍ وَلَا غَرْبِیَّةٍ یَكَادُ زَیْتُهَا یُضِیءُ وَلَوْ لَمْ تَمْسَسْهُ نَارٌ ۚ نُّورٌ عَلَىٰ نُورٍ ۗ یَهْدِی اللَّهُ لِنُورِهِ مَن یَشَاءُ ۚ وَیَضْرِبُ اللَّهُ الْأَمْثَالَ لِلنَّاسِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَیْءٍ عَلِیمٌ
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The Parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche and within it a Lamp: the Lamp enclosed in Glass: the glass as it were a brilliant star: Lit from a blessed Tree, an Olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is well-nigh luminous, though fire scarce touched it: Light upon Light! Allah doth guide whom He will to His Light: Allah doth set forth Parables for men: and Allah doth know all things.
4. The religion of Islam
Quran states
یُرِیدُونَ لِیُطْفِئُوا نُورَ اللَّهِ بِأَفْوَاهِهِمْ وَاللَّهُ مُتِمُّ نُورِهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْكَافِرُونَ
Their intention is to extinguish Allah´s Light (by blowing) with their mouths: But Allah will complete (the revelation of) His Light, even though the Unbelievers may detest (it).
هُوَ الَّذِی أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُ بِالْهُدَىٰ وَدِینِ الْحَقِّ لِیُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّینِ كُلِّهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ
It is He Who has sent His Messenger with Guidance and the Religion of Truth, that he may proclaim it over all religion, even though the Pagans may detest (it).

4. Divine noun and attribute
Exalted God states
اللَّهُ نُورُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۚ مَثَلُ نُورِهِ كَمِشْكَاةٍ فِیهَا مِصْبَاحٌ ۖ الْمِصْبَاحُ فِی زُجَاجَةٍ ۖ الزُّجَاجَةُ كَأَنَّهَا كَوْكَبٌ دُرِّیٌّ یُوقَدُ مِن شَجَرَةٍ مُّبَارَكَةٍ زَیْتُونَةٍ لَّا شَرْقِیَّةٍ وَلَا غَرْبِیَّةٍ یَكَادُ زَیْتُهَا یُضِیءُ وَلَوْ لَمْ تَمْسَسْهُ نَارٌ ۚ نُّورٌ عَلَىٰ نُورٍ ۗ یَهْدِی اللَّهُ لِنُورِهِ مَن یَشَاءُ ۚ وَیَضْرِبُ اللَّهُ الْأَمْثَالَ لِلنَّاسِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَیْءٍ عَلِیمٌ
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. 5. Quran
Exalted God states
فَآمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَالنُّورِ الَّذِی أَنزَلْنَا ۚ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِیرٌ
Believe, therefore, in Allah and His Messenger, and in the Light which we have sent down. And Allah is well acquainted with all that ye do.
أَوْ تَقُولُوا لَوْ أَنَّا أُنزِلَ عَلَیْنَا الْكِتَابُ لَكُنَّا أَهْدَىٰ مِنْهُمْ ۚ فَقَدْ جَاءَكُم بَیِّنَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ ۚ فَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّن كَذَّبَ بِآیَاتِ اللَّهِ وَصَدَفَ عَنْهَا ۗ سَنَجْزِی الَّذِینَ یَصْدِفُونَ عَنْ آیَاتِنَا سُوءَ الْعَذَابِ بِمَا كَانُوا یَصْدِفُونَ
Or lest ye should say: "If the Book had only been sent down to us, we should have followed its guidance better than they." Now then hath come unto you a clear (sign) from your Lord,- and a guide and a mercy: then who could do more wrong than one who rejecteth Allah´s signs, and turneth away therefrom? In good time shall We requite those who turn away from Our signs, with a dreadful penalty, for their turning away.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَوْحَیْنَا إِلَیْكَ رُوحًا مِّنْ أَمْرِنَا ۚ مَا كُنتَ تَدْرِی مَا الْكِتَابُ وَلَا الْإِیمَانُ وَلَٰكِن جَعَلْنَاهُ نُورًا نَّهْدِی بِهِ مَن نَّشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ۚ وَإِنَّكَ لَتَهْدِی إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِیمٍ
And thus have We, by Our Command, sent inspiration to thee: thou knewest not (before) what was Revelation, and what was Faith; but We have made the (Qur´an) a Light, wherewith We guide such of Our servants as We will; and verily thou dost guide (men) to the Straight Way.
6. Light in the doomsday
a. Light for believers
Exalted God states
یَوْمَ تَرَى الْمُؤْمِنِینَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ یَسْعَىٰ نُورُهُم بَیْنَ أَیْدِیهِمْ وَبِأَیْمَانِهِم بُشْرَاكُمُ الْیَوْمَ جَنَّاتٌ تَجْرِی مِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِینَ فِیهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِیمُ
One Day shalt thou see the believing men and the believing women- how their Light runs forward before them and by their right hands: (their greeting will be): "Good News for you this Day! Gardens beneath which flow rivers! to dwell therein for aye! This is indeed the highest Achievement.
یَوْمَ یَقُولُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ وَالْمُنَافِقَاتُ لِلَّذِینَ آمَنُوا انظُرُونَا نَقْتَبِسْ مِن نُّورِكُمْ قِیلَ ارْجِعُوا وَرَاءَكُمْ فَالْتَمِسُوا نُورًا فَضُرِبَ بَیْنَهُم بِسُورٍ لَّهُ بَابٌ بَاطِنُهُ فِیهِ الرَّحْمَةُ وَظَاهِرُهُ مِن قِبَلِهِ الْعَذَابُ
One Day will the Hypocrites- men and women - say to the Believers: "Wait for us! Let us borrow (a Light) from your Light!" It will be said: "Turn ye back to your rear! then seek a Light (where ye can)!" So a wall will be put up betwixt them, with a gate therein. Within it will be Mercy throughout, and without it, all alongside, will be (Wrath and) Punishment.
b. The lightness of the earth of the doomsday
Exalted God states
وَأَشْرَقَتِ الْأَرْضُ بِنُورِ رَبِّهَا وَوُضِعَ الْكِتَابُ وَجِیءَ بِالنَّبِیِّینَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ وَقُضِیَ بَیْنَهُم بِالْحَقِّ وَهُمْ لَا یُظْلَمُونَ
And the Earth will shine with the Glory of its Lord: the Record (of Deeds) will be placed (open); the prophets and the witnesses will be brought forward and a just decision pronounced between them; and they will not be wronged (in the least).
لَّقَدْ كُنتَ فِی غَفْلَةٍ مِّنْ هَٰذَا فَكَشَفْنَا عَنكَ غِطَاءَكَ فَبَصَرُكَ الْیَوْمَ حَدِیدٌ
(It will be said:) "Thou wast heedless of this; now have We removed thy veil, and sharp is thy sight this Day.
7. Divine rules in Turat and Bible
Quran states
إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَا التَّوْرَاةَ فِیهَا هُدًى وَنُورٌ ۚ یَحْكُمُ بِهَا النَّبِیُّونَ الَّذِینَ أَسْلَمُوا لِلَّذِینَ هَادُوا وَالرَّبَّانِیُّونَ وَالْأَحْبَارُ بِمَا اسْتُحْفِظُوا مِن كِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَكَانُوا عَلَیْهِ شُهَدَاءَ ۚ فَلَا تَخْشَوُا النَّاسَ وَاخْشَوْنِ وَلَا تَشْتَرُوا بِآیَاتِی ثَمَنًا قَلِیلًا ۚ وَمَن لَّمْ یَحْكُم بِمَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْكَافِرُونَ
It was We who revealed the law (to Moses): therein was guidance and light. By its standard have been judged the Jews, by the prophets who bowed (as in Islam) to Allah´s will, by the rabbis and the doctors of law: for to them was entrusted the protection of Allah´s book, and they were witnesses thereto: therefore fear not men, but fear me, and sell not my signs for a miserable price. If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) Unbelievers.
وَلْیَحْكُمْ أَهْلُ الْإِنجِیلِ بِمَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ فِیهِ ۚ وَمَن لَّمْ یَحْكُم بِمَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْفَاسِقُونَ
Let the people of the Gospel judge by what Allah hath revealed therein. If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) those who rebel.
وَأَنزَلْنَا إِلَیْكَ الْكِتَابَ بِالْحَقِّ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَیْنَ یَدَیْهِ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ وَمُهَیْمِنًا عَلَیْهِ ۖ فَاحْكُم بَیْنَهُم بِمَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ ۖ وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ أَهْوَاءَهُمْ عَمَّا جَاءَكَ مِنَ الْحَقِّ ۚ لِكُلٍّ جَعَلْنَا مِنكُمْ شِرْعَةً وَمِنْهَاجًا ۚ وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَجَعَلَكُمْ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً وَلَٰكِن لِّیَبْلُوَكُمْ فِی مَا آتَاكُمْ ۖ فَاسْتَبِقُوا الْخَیْرَاتِ ۚ إِلَى اللَّهِ مَرْجِعُكُمْ جَمِیعًا فَیُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ فِیهِ تَخْتَلِفُونَ
To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety: so judge between them by what Allah hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging from the Truth that hath come to thee. To each among you have we prescribed a law and an open way. If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to Allah; it is He that will show you the truth of the matters in which ye dispute.
یَا أَیُّهَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا مَن یَرْتَدَّ مِنكُمْ عَن دِینِهِ فَسَوْفَ یَأْتِی اللَّهُ بِقَوْمٍ یُحِبُّهُمْ وَیُحِبُّونَهُ أَذِلَّةٍ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِینَ أَعِزَّةٍ عَلَى الْكَافِرِینَ یُجَاهِدُونَ فِی سَبِیلِ اللَّهِ وَلَا یَخَافُونَ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ فَضْلُ اللَّهِ یُؤْتِیهِ مَن یَشَاءُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ وَاسِعٌ عَلِیمٌ
O ye who believe! if any from among you turn back from his Faith, soon will Allah produce a people whom He will love as they will love Him,- lowly with the believers, mighty against the rejecters, fighting in the way of Allah, and never afraid of the reproaches of such as find fault. That is the grace of Allah, which He will bestow on whom He pleaseth. And Allah encompasseth all, and He knoweth all things.
وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ أَقَامُوا التَّوْرَاةَ وَالْإِنجِیلَ وَمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَیْهِم مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ لَأَكَلُوا مِن فَوْقِهِمْ وَمِن تَحْتِ أَرْجُلِهِم ۚ مِّنْهُمْ أُمَّةٌ مُّقْتَصِدَةٌ ۖ وَكَثِیرٌ مِّنْهُمْ سَاءَ مَا یَعْمَلُونَ
If only they had stood fast by the Law, the Gospel, and all the revelation that was sent to them from their Lord, they would have enjoyed happiness from every side. There is from among them a party on the right course: but many of them follow a course that is evil.
