The name of NEISHABUR is attached to the presence of rich minerals with turquoise, along with shaving and shaping of this gemstone, which is also an old and most profitable profession.
Currently, turquoise mines are located in the northwest of NEISHABUR and the BINALOOD slopes. Turquoise has many varieties, including Arabian turquoise, SHAJARI, SHERVAM, AJAMI (the best kind of turquoise) TU KHAL and CHAGHULE. Turquoise more often used as jeweled and scarlet on a ring, necklace and silverware. Turquoise is the most famous souvenir of NEISHABUR city, which has a worldwide reputation. Other handicrafts are carpet weaving, pottery and glazing. Other souvenirs of this city, which we can mention are the crisp stems of the mythological plant of Rhubarb and flowers in the spring. It is narrated from oral narratives and some famous books that Imam Reza (as), in his historical migration from Medina to Marv, entered the city of NEISHABUR, and the high-ranking Hadith of the Shi`a dynasty, which contains the abstract of Shi'a history, was expressed by his majesty for NEISHABURIANS. It is narrated that NEISHABURIANS have brought pencil cases for their Hadith's writing and have written the sayings. Historians say the number of pencil cases exceeded 30,000, and others reported as 12,000 pencil cases, indicating the prevalence of pencil case making art and value of literate, knowledgeable, and literate people in this cultural city.
Though the said art in NEISHABUR today has no prevalence. But it is worth for the urgent actions of the Cultural Heritage Organization, Handicrafts and Tourism offices of State to revive this valuable art.
