Stone carving is an art that will never be eliminated.

Stone was used in Iran since ancient times to build monuments and this raw material is used to create beautiful and lasting works in Iran. Volcanic rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks are the most important kinds of stone that can be detected in three ways of physical appearance, hardness and color. Records of imprinting on the rock was began from walls of caves that dates back to 4 thousand and 500 years before Christ, such as rock paintings in LORESTAN caves. The Rock Petroglyph is still preserved due to physical conditions over several thousand years.
The ancient ruins of Persepolis or remained pillars in BISTOUN which is situated in TAGH BOUSTAN area have hundreds of ornamental shapes of geometry, curve and plant in very small sizes.
In the Islamic period, stone was much used by GHAZNAVIAN in GHAZNE area. In this province, discovered shaped stones are associated with KUFIC inscriptions.
Stone is not used only in body but also used in foundation and exterior and interior of the buildings.

The sample can be seen in Persepolis and Zoroaster Temple.

Stone was used in façade of the buildings, the walls of the city and palaces. And other examples are: Wall, facade, stairs,
Frame of doors and windows, and interior decoration of marble throne in GOLESTAN Palace, schools, mosques, courtyards,
Main doors, pillars, plinth, building floor, minaret, pulpit, pond way, fountain, tomb stone and stone inscriptions which are the additional elements of the buildings.
Some of the decorative arts which is to be done by stone are: capacity making, cutting the stone and Perforation.
Designs used in the murals in ancient times until the Median period, HAKHAMANESHIAN, Parthian and SASANIAN and small roles in QAJAR time, are included designs of human, animal, plant and mythical.
Human designs are clear and scenes of hunting, stadium, dance court or rituals describe scenes of sacrifice.
Plant designs, are including lotus flower, Shah Abbas flower, cypress, and idols of flowers, arabesques and Angelica.
Drawings of animals, are including horse, lion, and cow (take and run), birds, double head cow and lion.
Stone inscriptions are including cuneiform image lines, Parthian Pahlavi, Sassanid Pahlavi, Persian and Arabic.
Now traditional arts of the distant past is remain behind, with the support of veteran artisans we must prevent this course to be forgotten.
